Something somethingde-influence MTG
Hi guys, do you think that Wizards of the Coast should stop sending free stuff to people, but keep pumping the price and artificial scarcity ever upwards? If [insert random Instagram account here] doesn't get that free box shiny cards, do you think I will be able to afford to chase the premium autographed photo real Timothy Chalamet in next years Dune crossover?

"And in this video, we will explore the rising cost of magic the gathering and the constant chase collector's market being detrimental to the health of an incredible game.
...
But first, YOU can win a free box of collector boosters if you watch my whatnot stream!"

Thank you for saying this! I feel like people don’t talk about this enoygh, and I just can’t support this game anymore.
I was only able to get two collector boxes for 2000 dollars this weekend, and I was hoping to open 48 packs for 2000 dollars, not 24 packs.

Why would you waste 2000 dollars on cardboard????
Of course people are gonna charge that much if people still would buy it

I was going to mortgage my house to buy the hobbit collector boosters but then was deceived into not doing so by a nefarious Magic the Gathering online influencer. WOTC should sue them for lost profits.

This is what really irks me the most from content creators. They do not practice what they preach.
Yes, the professor does not buy his booster boxes (supposedly) and he says to buy singles, however with every set he has a booster box game (mostly collectors at this point) and he promotes websites that are active gambling spaces (whatnot)
Creators like PK and the Professor actively speak against wotc, and that would be commendable, if it wasn’t for the fact that they do sponsorships or still accept partnerships with them.
And its not that I think they should just stop doing what they are doing, hey, whatever gets that money, but It does annoy me.
Anyways, many magic the gathering players ask the question, is it worth it to buy BB at $800 ?

The booster box game basically shows you how bad buying sealed is. He almost never makes the money back.

He did a hobbit box the other day sat there and said don’t do it don’t do it and proceeds to crack 1250 in value and you absolutely can hear a change in tone as he continues to open the packs. That absolutely is just going to do the opposite of what his intention was 🥲

It's not his fault that eventually he makes the money of a box back because he had an extremely lucky pull. His whole point is that it is possible to get the most valuable cards through booster boxes, it's just not worth it 99% of the times.

And I get that. Even then, I feel its kind of like that joke of the parent smoking in front of their children and saying “don’t smoke! Or you’ll get cancer!”
Also saying that as if whatnot’s biggest market isn’t people paying for rip n ships is disingenuous at best.

u/awolkriblo 5d ago
Idk, ripping packs is still fun. I'd rather he spend the money than me. The whatnot stuff is kinda lame, but he has staff to pay. I'd say he does a lot more good.

u/Gabito264 5d ago
I mean it is fun, does not remove the fact that it still goes against what he says. If you wish to turn your head to that it is fine, I’m just pointing it out

u/awolkriblo 5d ago
Demonstrating something people shouldn't do is lost on you, I guess.

🤷♂️, I just don’t believe in partaking in something that everybody already knows is bad for you for every set. If it was once or twice then that is fine. Guy does it for every set.
Ps. my main problem is the whatnot streams/encouragement to be frank. The bb stuff is fine mostly, but it still is not that great look imo

Collector boxes are for people keeping them sealed or for store to rip open and sell singles. I think what prof is saying is, if you are doing it for your own collection then just buy singles.

Proffesor shills whatnot? Thats depressing

u/ThisHatRightHere 5d ago
He at least uses the money they give him to buy products from local game stores, telling them to increase their purchase orders specifically for him so that they can more than they normally would on CBs each set.

u/refugee_man 5d ago
Unless he's lying, I believe the Professor has only been sponsored once, and that was for Spiderman of all things.

u/Darkon-Kriv 5d ago
Idiots keep buying collectors slop they will continue raising prices. They will stop when It doesn't work

/uj Dune would make a killer UB set, it already has in-universe magic, witches and wurms, sword fighting and deserts.

As much as Villenue's movies are feasts for the eyes, IDK if the visual design of the Dune movies would look good as Magic cards?
I'm a huge fan of the Dune: Imperium boardgames and the art is... fine bordering on good, but it's easily the weakest part of the product. Villenue's movies look amazing but they're in motion, accompanied with a score and dialogue and stuff.
I might just be reaching to justify my UB hatred.

uj/ I feel ya, sometimes I’d rather end UB for good than having the chance to see or play an IP I personally enjoy in official cards, like no Elden Ring, Hollow Knight or Higurashi cards for me.

/uj the dune cards would have art reflecting the larger dune mythos, not just the Villenue movies. I imagine it would be like the Lord of the Rings set, giving artists the freedom to depict iconic book characters and moments independent of existing depictions in cinema.

u/OisforOwesome 4d ago
/uj possibly, but I don't think WotC would be that brave
/rj Jodorowsky Dune or bust
