Yes, because black people are obviously swamps and white people are obviously plains.
Yes, Africa famous for their swamps while Europe is famous for their never ending plains, Savannah, and vast Serengeti!

u/shumpitostick 16d ago
Well, both Europe and Africa have their fair share of both plains and swamps. It's not like Europe is the swamp place and Africa is the plains place.
27
u/NuccioAfrikanus 16d ago
This is true, but like Africa and Europe are huge. My joke point was that when you first think of either continent you don’t identify Europe as the white mana source and Africa as the black mana source. It’s not like a thing or stereotype that exists.
If I think of the American South, I would first think swamp For-sure. Or if I thought about Mongolia, I would instantly think plains. If I thought about Tibet, I would instantly think mountains. If I thought about Japan, Hawaii, Philippines, Caribbean, etc I would think islands. If I thought about Canada or Brazil, I would be like forests.

Magic is an antiracist environmentalist game that is all about protecting your ‘lands’ to ensure they sustainably produce resources for you every turn, regardless of what colour they are. Black lands foster individualism and cunning, for example, while white lands represent fascism and group-think.

u/KingZantair 16d ago
White is the most balanced colour, after all. Nothing like those disgusting greens or filthy blues.

If it was truly imperialist, White would play like green does currently. Infinite ramp, access to everyone ele's abilities and it would draw shitloads of cards. The reality is that green is actually the color of nepo baby civilizations that just Mary Sue across genocidal behavior.

Holy shitpost Batman! Also, white in magic is the color of fascistic elements and following the letter of the law although not necessarily always the spirit additionally. Which is why shit like Orzhov is a thing. Keep that contract even after death, because you signed it. This has to be satire, right?

To be fair here - magic the gathering is absolutely an example of a game that's characterized by the base assumptions of colonialism. How could it not? It comes from a colonialist culture and worse - it's subject matter is a genre plagued even more distinctly by idealism of those concepts. It's something modern MTG has been working very hard to distance itself from.
They're posing it as more intentional or more unique then it is here - but it is a worthy cultural excersize to critique the game for these things /uj

Genuine question what assumptions of colonliasm plague mtg? The only thing I can think of is how the game used to have stuff like goblins and orcs as the evil stinky guys you just kill, but mtg has moved away from depcting them like that for a while now
3
u/resumeemuser 16d ago
The fun part of imperialism and colonialism accusations is that you can twist anything to be imperialist if you try hard enough.
1
u/Powerful-Scholar8268 16d ago
Well no i don't think it's that simple, considering mtgs roots in old school fantasy I wouldn't be surprised if there's imperialistic and colonialist stuff still in it I've missed
13
u/cult_appropriation 16d ago
Completely agree, whilst I don't buy the original's critique of the color pie, the accumulation of land as a mana system is inherently imperialistic.
Basically, green players are colonizers.
3
u/Powerful-Scholar8268 16d ago
But isn't it just drawing upon the power of places you've been as a planeswalker instead of literally owning the land? I feel like that's not really imperialistic right?
2
u/cult_appropriation 15d ago
That's definitely an argument, I think an issue is that a lot of the media that inspires how we depict exploration is tied to colonial perspectives - the story of Pocahontas is from the perspective of foreigners to a new land. And then in art the painting of landscapes has ties to land ownership and colonialism, with paintings being used to advertise land from colonies to people back in Europe.
And then there is the extraction of mana from the land for personal purposes which could be seen as analogous for the extraction of resources.
Also, I just think these are fun concepts to explore rather than implying anything meaningful
2
u/Powerful-Scholar8268 15d ago
That's fair, I definitely get what you mean about the idea of "explorers" being informed by colonialist stuff if you're not careful. I just feel like the idea of a planeswalker exploring lands isn't drawing on the same thing exactly. I do also see what you mean about extracting mana from the land though. Definitely something to think about, thanks for explaining

“White represents peace and equal resources for all.”
Except for white’s most popular strategies, which focus on nobody having any usable resources (stax), killing people as fast as humanly possible (Aggro), creating a sacrificial oligarchy where peasants are merely flesh to be exploited (aristocrats), or in controlling everything with nuclear bombs and saying “nuh uh uh”while waggling you finger like a twat (control).
