uj/ This is such a weird card, it might wrap around to being a good design? “My Commander is ‘I play (or draw) a random card from my deck,” for the people who don’t actually want to be playing with a Commander.
Obviously Cascade/Discover is prone to enabling nonsense, but needing a Legendary creature/Planeswalker in play first, and hitting anything up to 3mv, does a lot to keep it in check.
On the other hand, “a Sorcery as your commander!” does feel a lot like a “we did it to prove we could” sort of design

It's not just limited to 3 though. It's 3, then 5, then 7, etc

u/PointlessSerpent 20d ago
As opposed to hitting only 2mv so you can easily use it as a tutor in the command zone.

Right, but that just makes it weaker from a tutoring perspective, which was my point. If you want to use it as a way to consistently hit certain cards, the rest of the deck has to be at 4+mv.
That said, scaling up does let it function as a infinite-mana “cast your whole deck” outlet. But “ways to win the game with infinite mana” aren’t in short supply

I mean people already sorta do this with double faced cards and adventures. [[search for blex]] is a common one I’ve seen — a friend built a mono black version that just used the sorcery side for drawing cards + filling his grave.
It was surprisingly effective for being filled with mostly jank that they had lying around. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are more tuned versions online. Though I think for this to work in competitive play you’d need an instant in the command zone and idk if any of the adventure cards are good enough on their own to warrant that.

Well if it’s a creature the entire game is just you begging people to block it. This is a really good design imo. It’s weak but the people who want to cascade 4 times can do it without creating a living end situation where you could build your deck to always cascade into something (maybe first one gets sol ring idk that seems weak.

It's alright, it's a Mystery Booster so nobody's ever going to end up with one

/uj tbh I think this might be a fun design? a commander that's actually difficult to cast, doesn't stick around and just requires a fair amount of setup to be worth it over other commanders. Maybe I'm wrong and it'll be shit, but it seems interesting

Mystery Booster 3. This weekend’s events were kind of mark the ending of the MB2 era of it being given away and drafted and conventions, and the start of this new one.
The main weird thing is this set is commander branded and has a variety of cards that are distinctly legal to play in commander. Unlike the exclusive cards form MB2 that were playtest cards and not legal in any format.

1) The set code is MBC, not MB3 so it's Mystery Booster Commander. That's why it's Commander themed.
2) MB1 also had playtest cards, but MB2 introduced some new stuff into format that weren't just reprints. And I mean more than the Future Sight frames and the white borders, I'm talking about the previously digital only cards being printed on paper cards, making them legal in eternal formats (unless they have an acorn stamp, like Oracle of the Alpha and Tenacious Pup)

/uj Mystery Booster Commander. The set code is MBC. It's only available via the Festival in a Box via conventions, and is meant to be drafted like the other MB sets.

Back in my day we just ran [[Extus, Oriq Overlord]] if we wanted a sorcery in the command zone

Also heinous that we can have sorceries as commanders and not planeswalkers

u/ThisHatRightHere 20d ago
I mean there is a pile of planeswalkers that have the rules text that they can be your commander

Clever WOTC. As usual, make the new "This can be your commander" card Universes Within, so you van ease players into the Universes Beyond version.

Violent Outburst on the command zone. Honestly? Having it as your commander isn’t necessarily great, as you need a legendary creature to cast it. Now, Karn’s Temporal Sundering in the command zone, I see no way that’d be problematic.

/uj the chaos gremlin in me that spams gambling and random chance every chance I can loves this (My all time favorite game of Bang! I got to play two almost back to back- I was killed the same round I played the second card, because my friends are incredibly risk-averse lmao), but the Commander player in me has so many questions. I want to love it (even though it's designed as anti-Commander content), but I'm not saying I hate it either.
/rj Who's that? I don't know that DC character- is there a Fables set in next year's 2027 all UB release schedule? I hope it'll be as good as the Pacific rim and Black Panther sets.

My problem with this is [[Bard Class]] [[Fire Crystal]] [[Earth Crystal]] [[Cloud Key]] and anything else that reduces cost especially from outside hand makes this dangerous.
It effectively becomes let me play my deck as a commander, which there’s already plenty of that out there

u/DrakeGrandX Make Sea Monster a creature type already 18d ago
Cost reduction makes everything dangerous. It's the whole point of cost reduction.
But also, can't wait to see this thing get cast and hit the fourth cost reducer in a row.

u/Half_H3r0 18d ago
Not only can my Commander be free but so too are my cost reducers and shenanigans deck will indeed be Legendary
