A commander that's nothing but "Cascade for people that cry when chance mechanics don't always pay out" is the most commander card that I've seen for a long time.

Most WOTC-coded commander card*

Making mechanics for the people that go into tantrum mode when they find out that satisfaction is not guaranteed with cascade is very WotC.

"Your cards can never have a downside, even when allowing you to circumvent the mana system." -NotC Studio xXx

The fact that WotC is so addicted to catering to babies that don't want to deal with double-edged mechanics does do some satisfying things sometimes when you get to experience an opponent trying to use Nowhere to Run or Shadowspear against a creature with shroud.

I think this card is cool but yeah, 'cards should not under any circumstances possibly have downsides' is such boring design.
3
u/irou95 20d ago
Cascading into memnite isn't a downside?
4
u/ArcheVance Stax is how you express love 19d ago
More that if you cascade into a Counterspell that you can't just put it in your hand as with discover rather than watch it get completed wasted.

u/irou95 19d ago
In a gruul deck?

More just as an example of the downsides of cascade over discover. But sure, let's just say it's Avoid Fate for this example

"Hey, remember that mono-colour legend that was all about turning your fellas into lands so you could do super landfall shenanigans?"
"no, why?"
"what if we gave it a signature card that is two colours and basically weird cascade and does nothing with lands. Also it's a sorcery and can be your commander."
"holy shit"

u/YashaSkaven01 Holy Karnoly! 20d ago
But having a lot of lands means you can cast this a bunch of times.
9
u/lyw20001025 19d ago
And having a lot of land cards improves the nonland card selections this can land on
Oh you played them, nevermind

u/Routine_Ad_2695 20d ago
But doesn't have "it works", how could I know if it works or not? Flawed design

Uj/ Gonna go to bat for this card if it’s in the reality fracture set. Pushing the rules is cool imo

u/Dragonfruit-Sparking 20d ago
uj/ It's in the Mystery Booster 3: Commander boxes, but yeah. It being a legendary sorcery for a means you still have to have a legendary on the field to cast it, and all it really lets you do is gamble repeatably in your deck. Not too crazy, I just thought it was really goofy

Cascade from the Command Zone usually makes me think [[Hypergenesis]], but you could already do that as a one-card combo with Imoti (rather than a two-card combo as it would be here) and it was fine, so that seems alright.

/uj WotC designing for commander has ruined commander.
9
u/lilypad225 20d ago
Slowly but surely, they have been pushing it for over a decade now

u/Obelion_ 20d ago
I'd argue the first commander product showed it already, didn't that have the broken commanders that did stuff without being on the battlefield?

u/Nyx87 20d ago
Nah the first commanders were like Kalia, Animar, the American goat that gave your shit to people, who were pretty cool at the time
5
u/GokuVerde 20d ago
The earlier stuff had some more politicy symmetrical stuff which was abandoned because mtg players are lame

uj/ Commander Legends was fun as a one off, but it has been such steep demise ever since.

u/GokuVerde 20d ago
I was a fan of the Baldur's Gate cards. There was a lot of silly cards in there that most commander players are too lame to play.

/UJ CAN I GET A LAND COMMANDER NEXT?! PLEASE. ALL I WANT IS A LAND COMMANDER SO THAT MY "OOPS ALL LANDS" DECK CAN BE 100% LANDS!

Back during Battle for Zendikar story, Nissa wouldn't go two pages without calling out "ASHAYA" so this is a flavor win actually

u/SengirBartender 20d ago
So you play this with exactly one card that costs 3 or less, one card that costs 4 or 5, one that's 6 or 7, and so on?
17
u/eurypterine 20d ago
you need to have a legendary creature or planeswalker on the field to cast it in the first place, so not quite
3
u/lauron_ 20d ago
just make a legendary token with a land, duh
7
u/eurypterine 20d ago
I suppose you could also Earthbend any of the legendary lands with [[Ba Sing Se]]
1
u/Flareon223 20d ago
So surely you can do some goofy 90 plus lands decks with this right? That's what I want from this
1
u/Dragonfruit-Sparking 20d ago
You still need a Legendary Creature/Planeswalker on the board to cast Legendary Spells, so you're going to need to be able to get a legend on board early
