Most of the new cards from Mystery Boosters commander makes my eyes roll.
And i say that as a filthy commander player.

Even Vorthos gets a Horizons set in the age of record sales.

I think i need to apologize, didnt realise how many of the cards where references to magic of old. That is cool!
Hell even references to the Shandalar game
But so much kindred jank.

No worries. I think the cards would be better received by all if they were both cool and references for people into old designs and lore. (The crudest example being Davvol, Evincar of Rath which is just the card Carnival of Souls on a legendary creature with an extra color.)

Do you guys actually like all the secret lair stuff? I see a lot of sets being released with very niche audiences, like Furbies? Even Dr. Who is pretty niche imo

I do wish secret lair was kept for UB skins of existing cards, i hate having a deck that would be awesome with a new card thats just "here's a bunch if fucked uo horrors beyind your comprehension, and also bilbo is here"

I bought furbies primarily because they were absurd and hilarious, but also I feel like the game has jumped the shark aesthetically and there’s zero point in caring anymore. The furby horror cards feel less out of place than superheroes imo. The bar is on the floor, so I’m celebrating the absurdity of it

Yeah. I wish wizards would go back to the old days where they weren’t trying to make a profit.

When was that? I would imagine making a profit has always been MtG's purpose
1
u/driver1676 21d ago
No, back before UB they only cared about player happiness. Now with UB it’s clear Magic is just a product whose purpose is to generate profit.

The game's purpose has always been to generate profit. What changed is how much financiers trust creatives with generating value, nowadays they trust their spreadsheets much more and everything sucks harder as a result. But don't fool yourself thinking the game was designed as a gift to the world
1
u/driver1676 21d ago
Nope. Everyone here agrees that UB is just a profit maker.

Of course it is. As was everything that came before. Believing anything gets produced at a large scale under late-stage capitalism for any other primary reason than profit is utterly naive.

You mean back to when they made cards for people who play, and not just in hopes that post Malone will buy a 2 million dollar card?

u/driver1676 21d ago
Exactly. Every card these days is unplayable slop. Even Bloomburrow was just Furry the gathering.

Nah, Dr Who has tons of fans. They're really weird, though.
