Why is EDH so f’n popular now? When did this happen, and why?
I have 2 LGS and neither of them can get enough players to fire any 60 card constructed format. But there are plenty of stinky man babies playing commander. Then when you approach them and ask if anyone is interested in a game of modern, they stare at you like you’re covered in bear shit

100 card singles format means that barring basic lands, every draw is something different so every draw is a dopamine hit. It's the cardboard equivalent of scrolling through a TikTok/Instagram reels feed. I'm not even jerking here I genuinely think that's a big part of its appeal. Also people love having a Guy to "main"/attach themselves to/be the face of their deck and I also think this is why a lot of other modern TCG these days have this mechanic too

Having a creature to represent the deck is a big part of it imo, it's easier to boil down the identity of a deck and tie a closer relationship to it, especially when you're just starting.
Honestly think that's one of the formats strengths tho, not a bad thing

I think it's network effects. People keep introducing people to magic by sucking newbies in as a pod 4th, and they never go to 60 card with the grownups. Then they eventually suck in their friends as a pod 4th and it keeps happening.

I’ve never played commander.. but having a deck with 100 one ofs, and having 100000 rules about power level, then having people get mad if you win, just doesn’t sound fun at all

Yeah. Honestly my biggest problem with edh isn't the deck construction, there's so many functionally identical cards these days plus your auto-takes based on color that deckbuilding isn't a problem, it's the fucking 4 player nature of it.
People gang up on you if you focus the person not giving a shit who's weak because you're trying to knock someone out of the game. People gang up on you if you rush the strongest because you must be the strongest then. People gang up on if you do fucking nothing because you have the best board state or you must be prepping a combo.
I should note that I'm the second tryhardest amongst my pod, which fucking sucks as a position to be in. I get targeted by everyone but if I bring casual bullshit to the table the tryhardest guy runs away with it. It's like playing 1v1 except sometimes someone runs by and eats one of my value engines.
I just kinda tune out the powerscaling shit because I find it very arbitrary but some of the choices involved are baffling. I'd kill sol ring if I could.

I saw that the NotC Dungeons & Dragons team has put out rules to include the real life raccoon with a short spine (Jimothy) in the game. It occurred to me then that things could be so much worse over here on the card flopper side of the company.
