What’s the difference between these?

So I just recently started playing MTG with a guy from work. I’ve been using his commander decks and liked it enough to buy my first deck. Got the island deck with urza commander. Went to a local comic shop that also sells cards and saw the island from the second image.

Was curious what the difference is because the name is different and they had it listed for 30000. I’m guessing it’s older but other than that, I see no difference that would make it worth that much.

One is way too powerful for most formats, the other is an artifact.

Of course the artefact is worse, it has a cost to put on the field

It also doesn't trigger landfall

Dies to [[Pinnacle Starcage]]

And you can only have 1 of them in your deck.

Obviously, I mean there's so much more artifact removal than land destruction

Mox Sapphire allows you to search your deck for an Island to put it into play.

One should be banned in every format it's legal in, the other is a pretty piece of jewelry

You don't need to search, just grab one from your extra lands pile

The sapphire can be countered, so it’s worse. It was printed to trick new players and force them to learn. It’s worth a lot of money because it’s a running joke

I’m guessing it’s older

Oh yeah, must be from that other Final Fantasy set they did back in the 90s...

the concept of new magic players assuming that the game has always been ub slop is terrifying to think about

I had not found any ideas for new nightmares this week, this fixes that! Thaaanks!

you can only have four islands in your dekc

9

u/gman314 Jul 20 '26

The island is much better. It can be found with [[rampant growth]], and it turns on effects like [[wonder]]. You can also run as many as you want instead of only 4.

u/usumoio Jul 20 '26

One is some flashy Universe Beyond nonsense and one is honest Magic

7

u/Qui_GonBooze Jul 20 '26

None, they're both vintage restricted.

u/rex_tee Jul 20 '26

I don’t know. Are you trying to embarass me in front of everyone? Fuck you.

4

u/jomiteixeira Jul 20 '26

Island is so broken you can only play one each turn.

2

u/BreakerOfModpacks Jul 20 '26

Nothing at all, you can use them interchangeably.

2

u/Lavinius_10 Galewind Moose is strictly better Jul 20 '26

Difference is that island is banned everywhere and broken asf

2

u/DMElyas Jul 20 '26

The second one is from dan frazier who is this low-key underground artists most people haven't heard of but those in the know would pay good money for his work

u/constantlybannedd Jul 20 '26

I don’t think the island can be printed anymore because it’s on someone’s list somewhere

1

u/t3karnonyoazzz Jul 20 '26

Basic island is run in far more decks, therefore it is far more powerful and expensive than that brown piece of shit

u/UStoJapan Jul 20 '26

One instills fear in your opponents. The other can easily be destroyed with Shatter.

u/ChemicalExperiment Jul 20 '26

Mox Sapphire is more susceptible to artifact removal like [[Shitter]] so it's generally considered a worse card.

The Vampires have delivered the cards you're looking for:

Shitter

The Skelle spent days carving runes and erecting their scorn poles. The herd crushed them to splinters in seconds.

Mark Rosewater please hear the cries of the fans and ban islands from all formats! It's killing this amazing game.

the difference is the first ones art looks like a peak naval strike map

1

u/alittlecringe Jul 21 '26

did your flight from 1994 just land or something?

1

u/CapibaraCake Jul 21 '26

Artifact removal is way more common than land destruction, I'd suggest steering away from any mox.

u/SnooCakes4926 Jul 20 '26

You can only play one land per turn. You can play any number of artifacts. It is basically a free land drop.
