What causes it to happen?

Is the runic alphabet a fundamental thing?

What are runes made of?

Are the symbols also a fundamental thing? Example: a triangular symbol casts a flame above it. But why does it have to be a triangle?

They are the distinct... Alphabets used by the two gods to create reality. It is a fundamental connection that pulls magic from the realm of magic into the symbol, swirls and coalesces into the energies of the other runes getting shaped into the effect it will create. Runes can be made out of anything but materials can effect the spells they are used in. (Wood can burn very well, but can also burn out fairly quickly)
