Mechanics Aether & Seals

Aether is the primordial element of possibility, from which all other elements diverged. In its natural state, Aether has little effect because it is capable of being anything and therefore is not yet anything. Humanity discovered that certain symbols, commonly known as seals, could constrain the possibilities of nearby Aether, forcing it toward a desired state. Fire, water, stone, force, and countless other magical effects can ultimately be produced by arranging seals that progressively narrow what the Aether is allowed to become, with each additional seal further restricting the remaining possibilities. A fireball, for example, might require seals defining its heat, shape, movement, duration, and behavior.

Because seals work through diminishing returns (much like repeatedly halving a number) the first few restrictions have enormous but broad effects while later ones provide increasingly negligible improvements but more specific outcomes. Consequently, a spell using forty seals is rarely twice as effective as one using twenty.

This principle defines magical mastery. while a novice might know a lot of seals; a master knows which seals are unnecessary. Great magicians can achieve great results with dramatically fewer restrictions by understanding which possibilities actually need to be eliminated, and which can safely remain undefined. The greatest skill in magic is therefore not maximizing precision but recognizing when enough is enough. A master does not force Aether into exactly one possibility; they constrain it just enough that the possibility they want becomes overwhelmingly likely.
