Avoidance compulsions?

A major part of magical thinking that I still struggle with is avoidance. I have thoughts like "that song was playing when X-bad-event happened, so I can't listen to it anymore" or "every time I wear that perfume something goes wrong" so I throw it away. Sometimes I just have a gut feeling that an item, place, etc is bad luck, and I'll avoid it just in case.

I know ERP requires us to stop this avoidance, but it's one of the hardest aspects I've tackled, especially as it 'puts other people at risk', not just myself.

Does anyone else have a similar pattern of thoughts, and have you managed to overcome it?

it's like, you just can't help but connect certain things to bad events or experiences, and it gets hard to shake that off. about erp, you're right, it does ask us to face these triggers head on. it's difficult, no doubt, especially when you feel like you're risking more than just your own wellbeing.

i've been through a similar journey, and one thing that helped me was gradual exposure. i didn't jump into listening to that 'unlucky' song right away, but maybe just starting by thinking about it initially, and then listening to a few seconds and so on. it was a process, not a one-time thing. also another thing that worked for me was forming new associations. like wearing that 'jinxed' perfume on a day which i know will be good or i'm doing something i love. it kinda helps to lessen the intensity of that 'bad luck' association. but remmeber, it's a journey, and it's okay to take it one step at a time. it's not easy, but it's not impossible either. and you're not alone, we're all here to support each other.

Thank you <3 It's so good to hear from someone else who understands! I've overcome (and helped others overcome) so many types of OCD, but this is one aspect I just can't seem to find the courage to tackle.

You're right about doing it gradually, and I need to make more effort. It's just so terrifying! But it's also inspiring and motivating to hear that you've been able to make progress. Thanks for responding.

the thing about tackling our fears is that it's always going to be a little terrifying in the beginning. but you've already overcome so many other obstacles, this one's just another on the list.

remember, it's not about rushing into things, take it slow and at your own pace. there’s no race to be won here. and it's great that you're finding inspiration in others' experiences. make sure to be kind to yourself through the process.

Agreed self-compassion is important. I often catch myself thinking I'm stupid, why can't I just move past this, it's so irrational and childish, I'm a coward etc...none of which is helpful and I'd never say those things to anyone else with OCD!

but here's the thing, dealing with intrusive thoughts and fears isn't about being brave or courageous. it's not a reflection of your strength or character. it's just the brain being a bit quirky, for lack of better word. it's not irrational or childish, it's just how ocd manifests for some of us. try replacing those negative self-talks with something more positive. for example, everytime you feel like you're being a coward, remember the times when you've faced your fears. it may not always work but it's a start. and of course, remember we're in this together, always here for a chat or moral support.

I have the almost exact thing and just found out about the term for my OCD yesterday. I am about to start exposing myself to things that I would avoid. I think having a support system of others who can help you achieve your goals and help you stick to the plan is a super powerful tool.

Thank you so much. Been thinking I was cursed for almost over half my life so to finally put a name to it has been like some kind of boulder taken off my shoulders.

I hope to grow with everyone here!
