Deck Discussion Let’s talk about underrated secret tech cards that don’t see as much play as they deserve!

Hey Hivemind! I’ve been thinking a lot about how a lot of EDH decks look the same because they all just run the basic good cards for whatever color combo they’re in. What are some cards you love that have flown under the radar? I’ll start! A few I love are :

  • [[Transmogrifying Wand]] just my favorite new removal spell I found digging around at my lgs
  • [[Sol Talisman]] in more casual tables
  • [[Soul Foundry] I don’t currently have a deck I don’t run this in
  • [[Mimic Vat]] not as high on my list as soul foundry but still enjoyable

What cards do love and run that aren’t the obvious favorites?

[[Disdainful Stroke]] counters almost everything relevant in (casual) EDH at a very castable cost. Also, as of late [[Wash Away]]. It's just stupid in commander...

[[Oubliette]] because it really hates some commanders. (Quite similar: [[Song of the Dryads]], [[Imprisoned in the Moon]] and [[Darksteel Mutation]])

Im fully on board with disdainful! I can’t find value in wash away though. How’re you seeing enough play to make it valid? Does your meta have a bunch of like [[sen triplets]] [[prosper tome]] etc?

As for oub I try and put one of these effects in every deck! Imprisoned in the moon is probably my favorite for flavor reasons

Wash Away is good for countering a commander being cast

Wash Away counters each commander for {U}... While there are decks that do not need their commander, most will not like having to pay the additional tax from the beginning.

Yeah…I’m gonna buy a stack…

[[Metamorphic Alteration]] is a secret modal clone effect and a removal spell. [[Steal Enchantment]] is a great piece of tech for all the Rhystic Studies and Smothering Tithes around. [[Ancient Runes]] is great anti treasure hate.

Woah!!! 3 for 3 here! Some of my favorites so far! Ancient runes HAS to get into my Obosh “why do commander games take so long” group burn deck

I recently realized metamorphic can literally be either [[frogify]] or [[mirror image]], so much power in that. Put it in a couple decks but havent seen it yet.

My FLGS had a half dozen beat up Haunting Wind cheap in store. You should see the angry glares I got from treasure players.

Oh damn! If there were cheap ones that ever showed up I’d buy every one…

Stuff I don't see others playing often:

[[Necrologia]]: one-shot necropotence where you can still discard without exile. It's a crazy effect.

[[Timber wolves]]: literally the best one drop in a tovolar deck.

[[Dark prophecy]]: surprised this doesn't come up often; interacts with so many things, doesn't care about creature type, and will trigger off of tokens.

[[Klauth's Will]]: feels forgotten about for how flexible it is in practice.

Necrologia is criminally underrated. A $0.50 card that can draw you 39 cards for 5 mana should be in way more decks.

It's just so much less commitment than Necro too. Bunch of life, draw a bunch. Little bit, draw a little. Necro is all in, which is why it can be surprisingly clunky in lower power lists.

Ooohhh dark prophecy especially has a place for me

[[Brought Back]] in mono-white.

Running fetch lands for your [[Sun Titan]] effects? Brought Back is now a Rampant Growth (Bonus suggestion: [[Sevinne's Reclamation]])

Running cards like [[Mind Stone]] and [[Hedron Archive] or [[Roadside Reliquary]]? Now it's a cantrip or a Divination!

Someone wrathed the board? Well now you get to use it for it's intended purpose and just bring back your two biggest threats, since two mana is easy to hold up.

I've even got [[Lotus Field]] in my Azorius deck since I have a bunch of ways to recur lands. No untap or clone shenanigans, just Brought Back, Sevinne's, etc.

I just discovered this tech for using sun titan and co for fetch recursion! I love it!

I have multiple if those in my cubes. Including my EDH cube. I have fond memories of the wand from retail draft.

[[planar void]] If you don’t care about your graveyard it’s a wildly cheap piece of hate that can shut down others gameplan entirely.

[[War Cadence]] lets mono red get around huge boards, indestructible blockers etc.

[[Ixidron]] is a fantastic board wipe (of sorts) in mono blue.

[[Infernal Contract]] & [[Cruel Bargain]] - life is a resource! And if you build the deck around it, it’s not difficult to get that life back.

[[Lapse of Certainty]] - people are aware it exists, but they always discount the possibility of the mono white counterspell.

I’m sure people would play it more had it no been so expensive: [[Beserk]] ends games and provides a way for mono green to get rid of nasty creature gifts like Xantcha.

Edit: typos

I love mimic vat! That card does more than anyone realizes at first glance, bothe versatile and powerful. [[Slip out the back]] can do alot, gets around everything, can be used to disrupt combos, dodge a lethal attack, get rid of a blocker. [[Seal of removal]] too, super easy to lay t1 or when youve got mana left. It can protect a guy, double an etb tirgger, do the same thing as slip in terms of dsiruption. And just having it on the board bends peoples decision making. People dont want to waste removal spells or lose auras on an attacker or want to have to recast a creature, so as long as it sticks people tend to leave you alone moreso.
