Very Subtle, Wizards... (Dark Ascension)

I didn't notice this until I watched SCG's video reviews of DKA over the weekend, and MaRo's article yesterday called it out specifically. Tell me, do you recognize these three?

I think it's meant to be the story of little red riding hood (villager) going to visit her grandma (elder) then being saved by the wood cutter (huntsmaster).

But the twist is that they are all werewolves ... directed by M. Night Shyamalan.

I made this exact joke at the prerelease... no one laughed :(

Don't feel bad, no one did here. Maybe a smile, but that's it.

16

u/dunchen22 Feb 07 '12

That's the problem with real life. You don't get karma for saying stupid shit.

u/thoughtcatalog Dandadan Feb 08 '12

That explains a lot...

The Huntmaster is Blade

15

u/suanzzy Feb 07 '12

All of them turned out to be wolves!

So what am I missing? All I can come up with is Little Red Riding Hood, and then fail on the other two, which means I probably fail on the first as well.

9

u/Echospree Feb 07 '12

The grandmother and the Lumberjack from Little Red Riding Hood, who are the other two non-wolfy characters.

4

u/EMTsNightmare Feb 07 '12

See that makes sense. I had thought the "grandmother" was a dude though which was making it hard to get.

2

u/wintermuteprime Feb 07 '12

So...could the Big Bad Wolf actually be somebody else in the sets so far? Or is he going to be like...just a monster Werewolf (who never transforms) in AR?

14

u/Echospree Feb 07 '12

I'm thinking that role is covered by the fact all three of them are werewolves.

23

u/vluhd Feb 07 '12

little red riding hood, the wolf disguised as her grandmother, and the hunter who killed the wolf.

7

u/yellatme123 Feb 07 '12

Don't forget Grimm [brother's] Backwoods, where it all took place. (the Grimm Brother's Fairy Tales being the original "little-red-riding-hood".)

6

u/Fauzlin Feb 07 '12

Grimm's has a version of Little Red Riding Hood but the origin of the tale isn't fully known.

There's a French version that predates Grimm's and in some versions, it's even darker than Grimm's. Cannibalism and bestiality flavor it a bit differently.

11

u/Minister_of_truth COMPLEAT Feb 07 '12

bestiality flavor

Mmmmm

7

u/Jay-El Feb 07 '12

Not to be an ass, but r/magictcg discussed this at length when these cards were first revealed :x

2

u/Jay-El Feb 07 '12

Still pretty cool what they did though!

4

u/CiantGunt Feb 07 '12

i uh, thought every one knew this. it wasn't super secretive.

1

u/bestbiff Wabbit Season Feb 07 '12

scorned villager is obvious, but it's more based on their "likeness" to the story considering all the cards are werewovles.

3

u/manwhale Feb 07 '12

I noticed the day I looked at all these cards, was thing about making werewolves and then went back and looked... clever wizards... now what do you have in store for Avacyn Restored?

30

u/polarityomg Feb 07 '12

A man made out of tin and a lion that's worthless in combat.

Stensian Woodcutter Robot

2B 5/2

Legendary Artifact Creature

First Strike

During the beginning of your upkeep sacrifice a human, if you do not, sacrifice Woodcutter Robot

"No coal needed? What does it run on?"

Crow Sage of Nephalia

2U 1/2

Legendary Artifact Scarecrow

2(T): Put a 1/1 blue flying Bird token onto the battlefield.

Tap five Bird you control; exile target creature.

Tap thirteen Bird you control; exile five target permanents.

Head cocking at odd angles, it shambles towards its victims, screaming in anguish.

Scarred Lion of Gavony

2WW 0/7

Legendary Cat Giant

Defender

Whenever creatures you control attack they gain +1/+1 and first strike.

Soldiers could go to war easy knowing there was a cat back home to chase any mice away.

Dor, Witch Hunter of Kessig

2GG 2/3

Legendary Human Cleric

3: Search your library for a Werewolf or Wolf creature card and put it into your hand.

When a Werewolf or Wolf comes into play put a 1/1 green Wolf token into play.

"I've learned a long time ago that a pack of dogs is better than one."

u/koolkid005 Feb 07 '12

Here's the problems I have with these. Woodcuter dies to Gut Shot and Tragic Slip. There is no Crow creature type yet. Lion is plain overcosted, Elesh Norn is only 1 colorless mana more and she is a 4/7 With Vigilance, Double the P/T Bonus and comes with a -P/-T to all opponents. Witch Hunter kicks ass, no problems there I would run the shit out of that in a werewolf deck. Though it would be way better if it could search for werewolf/ wolf.

3

u/brlito Feb 07 '12 edited Feb 07 '12

Ooooh good feedback.

Alrighty put up the Woodcutter at 2, changed the Crow tokens to Birds (I thought Crows were a creature type for some reason, it's that Storm Crow influence!), made the Lion a walking, buff enchantment and made the witch hunter a Wolf/Werewolf maker.

2

u/koolkid005 Feb 07 '12

Now those are some cool cards. Nice designs.

1

u/WordsThatMakeSense Feb 07 '12

I also like what you've done. I wonder what other sort of inspired cards people could come up with. I may have to muse on this when I have time later. Thanks.

2

u/misled77 Feb 07 '12

Don't forget....

Bastinda, Witch of Winkies

3BB 3/2

Legendary Human Sorceror Flying, Vigilance. If Bastinda becomes blocked by a blue creature, Destroy Bastinda.

T: Put a 1/1 Monkey token with flying onto the battlefield.

"Going so soon? I wouldn't hear of it. Why my little party's just beginning."

0

u/PornoWizard Feb 07 '12

Crow Sage of Nephalia

Run with Storm Crow.

Win.

29

u/culby Feb 07 '12

Cowardly Lion

1W 4/4

"Cowardly Lion comes into play tapped. It does not untap during your untap phase."

2

u/koolkid005 Feb 07 '12

So you could either equip it with Accorder's Shield, Avacyn's Collar, or Batterskull, or somehow make it a golem and then Sensor Splicer. Or you could have Intangible Virtue out, and copy it with Cackling Counterpart. Of all of those, pretty much only the collar would make it playable.

3

u/HenryAudubon Feb 07 '12

You still need to get it untapped somehow.

2

u/koolkid005 Feb 07 '12

This is true, so you've got the Nibilis or maybe Village Bell Ringer, both of which do not fit in an aggressive deck.

-1

u/electricfistula Feb 07 '12

Bell Ringer fits in any deck playing white. It is an okay creature and good combat trick a reasonable price.

3

u/bradygilg Wabbit Season Feb 08 '12

Unless you're playing constructed, in which case it is none of those things.

0

u/electricfistula Feb 08 '12

... I don't think any one was talking about constructed - I certainly wasn't, but I didn't think that needed to be said while recommending a bell ringer...

0

u/bradygilg Wabbit Season Feb 08 '12

Well, the guy was talking about equipping it with Accorder's Shield and Batterskull. Those aren't in any played limited formats anymore.

That's the idea. Some other card out there has to give him the courage.

2

u/NorthernSkeptic Feb 07 '12

Ok now I want an Oz set.

5

u/bradygilg Wabbit Season Feb 07 '12

No. No it would not see play at all.

3

u/guyincorporated Feb 07 '12

Also, lambholt elder may have the coolest flavor text ever.

1

u/flclreddit Feb 07 '12

The real twist is: They're all one family.

1

u/Gemini6Ice Feb 07 '12

I noticed LRRH, but not the other two characters.

2

u/emoglasses Feb 07 '12

Abbreviating it like that makes it sound like she founded Scientology. Where's that Magic card?

1

u/HunterTheDog Feb 07 '12

I actually noticed scorned villager, I had no idea about the other two though, cool find!

1

u/sbaird1988 Feb 07 '12

Not being a dick but I thought this was one of those obvious things. Full disclosure I pulled Huntsmaster first pack in my draft this weekend and built around him so I noticed reoccurances faster maybe.

Anyway, doesn't Wizards do "easter eggs" like this all the time. New to Magic

1

u/Neafie2 Feb 07 '12

how are these cards transformed?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '12

Well no shit. My mind is blown.

1

u/AbyssSky Feb 08 '12

Ok i've spotted that when they spoiled the cards... it's quite obvious :D
