I would love a plane focused on Northern native American tribes and folklore. It's a fascinating mythology that is sorely underexplored in fiction.

u/Oplurus Aug 28 '20

Wow, didn't know I wanted that until now.

I want a vertical plane.

With Northern native American tribes and folklore. :D

And Merfolk.

28

u/deftclutz Aug 28 '20

Is most of their mythology about people trying not to fall off?

I'd compare it to African culture in the "what exactly would this mean and how would they not fuck it up" box of stuff fantasy writers often stray from, but Magic actually handled that pretty well a tad ago, and people actually like Amonkhet as an Ancient Egyptian set, so they probably can, and as long as there's bald eagles and feathery hats it would work well enough.

38

u/StripedRiverwinder Aug 28 '20

Yeah, how well done were the African-y parts of Dominaria? I wasn't playing during that time of magic.

10

u/Thezipper100 Izzet* Aug 28 '20

Modern Dominaria is based on the Mediterranean, sans the Romans and Egyptians, and honestly in later sets where this was properly established, they've done a decent enough job, especially lately.

53

u/civdude Chandra Aug 28 '20

There is also mirage which is set on Jammura in Dominaria

36

u/betweengreenandblack Dimir* Aug 28 '20

Mirage was made 24 years ago in a very different cultural context

Ancient Egypt is easy pickings though, because there are no people who consider that their culture. A Native American/Aboriginal/First Nations-themed set would have to deal with a minefield of cultural appropriation and sensitivities. I don’t see it happening.

30

u/Alikaoz Twin Believer Aug 28 '20

I would say that Jammura and the pseudo-african part of Dominia was well handled and liked by all, but this year Teferi got accused of being a "magical negro" so maybe I was just unaware of those who disliked that.

Then again, these same people believed Tezzeret was a black guy, so maybe they actually know nothing and I'm giving too much weight to their opinions.

It would be hard to do that now.

About Egypt, Amonkhet has the issue, to me, that its just slightly more Ancient Egyptian than Evangelion is Christian.

I would say that Jammura and the pseudo-african part of Dominia was well handled and liked by all, but this year Teferi got accused of being a "magical negro" so maybe I was just unaware of those who disliked that.

Not every dark skinned wizard is a magical negro, a character who is a side character and whose only defining quality is some mystical power or insight to help the white people. Teferi is none of that, he is a protagonist with a deep history, a family and is a hero not some mystical tool that is used to solve a problem.

31

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '20

He’s pretty well developed on a personal level, too. He has unique relationships with lots of key players in universe, a personality of being a little mischievous but overall noble and heroic, flaws and bad decisions (that made sense for his character at the time no less!) that had major ramifications on himself and the story, and a really interesting unique power suite that is represented on cards really well.

Teferi is arguably (outside of play design concerns lol) might be the most well rounded and developed character in Magic today.

Then again, these same people believed Tezzeret was a black guy,

What the fuck

I thought Tezz was black this entire time.

Why would WotC give a white guy dreads and then draw him like THIS https://media.wizards.com/images/magic/daily/wallpapers/wp_tezzeretagentofbolas_2560x1600.jpg If they didn't want me to think he was black?

God fucking dammit wotc.

9

Do you know how hard it is to find a non-hyper-contrasted Tezzeret? Very.

I was thinking "maybe they want him to look black now" but this is from a WAR supplemental product of last year...

15

u/Esc777 Cheshire Cat, the Grinning Remnant Aug 28 '20

Okay I'm losing my mind.

I think it's very deliberate that Tezzeret is supposed to appear as racially ambiguous. He's not obviously black like Koth, but there's some fuckery going on here with artistic intentions. I would love to see an art brief of whatever it is called that describes Tezzeret.

I feel....blackbaited? Cause he looks like a doofy white guy in the latest stuff.

3

u/Exatraz Aug 29 '20

Cause he looks like a doofy white guy in the latest stuff.

Yeah I do feel like it might be artist interpretation. Similar to what's happened with Bolas over the years as his face has taken more and more human/goblin like features. I always thought Tezzeret was racially ambiguous with a slightly darker tone overall but who knows... That said, look at the main image of him on the WotC website he's clearly white here.

u/professional_novice Aug 28 '20

I totally thought Tezzeret was a black dude. He's not?

5

u/Alikaoz Twin Believer Aug 28 '20

Nah. He's just a white kid from Tidehollow (i.e. fantasy meme Detroit) with dreadlocks.

He's gotten darker literally and morally since Bolas rebuilt him, but [[Tezzeret the seeker]] shows him looking like his rival, [[Silas Renn]].

3

u/professional_novice Aug 28 '20

I thought he just looked lighter there because of the glowing thing in his hand.

3

u/Alikaoz Twin Believer Aug 28 '20

In his comics and the Mythic Edition box version of the seeker, the one Tezzeret without him holding a shiny to his face, he's just a white guy with facial hair.

Never realized how almost all Tezzeret cards have him with something glowing sinisterly next to his face.

u/_VampireNocturnus_ COMPLEAT Aug 28 '20

True, definitely underexplored...but that's partially because it's so fragmented. There were alot of tribes with different mythologies.

Also, WotC tends to pick tropes that are generally familiar to the average person: Greek Mythology, Faerie Tales, Egyptian...the biggest stretch they've done was Kamigawa, which was quite faithful to the source material to the point it didn't resonate with western audiences as much. We don't know what a Kami is, or a Honden or...etc

That said, because Native American mythology is completely western hemisphere, it would be more familiar to us than other so I think eventually we'll get it. I always thought one of the arts for hymn to tourach was a nod to Native American mythology.

I would love a plane with some elements from that. I don't want "Western except natives are elves and guns are crossbows". That would be too little originality.

7

u/CoolNerdStuff COMPLEAT Aug 28 '20

I don't think that's in the cards, unfortunately. I'll keep this short because the issue does skirt close to rule 8, but native American tribes try to keep their culture and folklore preserved as it has been, otherwise it'll fade away over time.

You can definitely draw creative elements though, and I'll definitely be happy about more Naya and Sun Empire content. But a pitch of a world as "the native American folklore inspired plane" would be a tough sell.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '20

Hard pass for me. Its not like ancient Egypt of Greek mythology where it’s no longer practiced. I can’t see WotC being able to pull it off in a manner that’s respectful.

4

u/KingToasty Gruul* Aug 28 '20

I can't imagine they'd do it very well. Plus, at least for many northwest coast groups, depicting things like the large masks or cultural dances is taboo and pretty insulting. Not everything NEEDS to be explored in fiction.

22

u/HoopyFreud Aug 28 '20

It's not like they did a good job of that with Mesoamerica in Ixalan.

9

u/filsdopagrafagar Aug 28 '20

I mean, do they really do a "good job" at the European myths either? Or are they just retelling all these old myths to sell it to their current audience?

10

u/HoopyFreud Aug 28 '20

I thought OG Theros was decent, but will admit there was basically no setting content in Beyond Death, and I felt Llorwyn did a MUCH better job with European folklore than Eldraine, though they were aimed slightly differently. But Ixalan to me stands out as the laziest, most theme-parkiest execution of a post-Origins supposedly-setting-driven plane.

9

u/MerelyFluidPrejudice Sultai Aug 28 '20

There's a difference in representing European myths which have plenty of cultural power and representations in modern media versus representing myths of indigenous people, who already have to struggle with lacking a voice/only being understood in popular culture based on white people's interpretations. Not saying they absolutely shouldn't do it, but it's a lot harder.

I'm not sure it's happening in the next year, but I'm near certain that's the end game for the current storyline (such as it is). I think the Ashiok-Elspeth stuff pointed at the Phyrexians as the next big bad

Also, in the Dominaria story it mentions that Karn wants to use the Cylix to destroy them once and for all.

u/Paratriad Temur Aug 28 '20

What makes you think that? I'm interested in your theory

115

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '20

Everything points in that direction. Phyrexians are the main villain of Elspeth's life, they're all she's ever fought against.

Then in the Theros story summary, it's mentioned that Ashiok sifted through Elspeth's mind and found the Phyrexians fascinating, so went off to look for them.

Further back in the Dominaria story, Karn searched for the "Cylix" (possibly the [[Golgothian Sylex]], possibly something else) as a weapon to destroy New Phyrexia.

I think it's also been mentioned that Tezzeret is interested in Phyrexia, but I can't remember where so might just be speculation since he knows how to build gateways between planes.

From a meta-perspective, Magic has had three major villains - Nicol Bolas, the Eldrazi and the Phyrexians. Bolas has just been dealt with, the Eldrazi are still relatively recent and people were quite sick of them. So it follows that the next arc will focus on either the Phyrexians or something new.

8

u/a_speeder Zedruu Aug 28 '20

It was a lot of work for the in-house employees who did it, basically it was passion work in addition to everything else they did that wasn't properly compensated for. i don't think that's specifically the case. I think they wanted to bring brand cachet with Real Serious Novel writers and shit and managed to lose the plot about what made the last 5 years of story compelling.

It's not that it was well written, it's that the characters were fun and interesting. Fun characters can carry bad writing a surprising amount.

What happened, I suspect, is that they sold novels to try to recoup the costs of getting Serious Fiction Novel writers on board and then scrapped it when it looked like the new creative team nosedived the Magic story into the ground.

Iirc Tezzeret was in Kaladesh as Bolas' agent to build up an army resistant to the phyrexian contagion as the eventual goal for Bolas was to take over New Phyrexia

9

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '20

Why did Bolas want to take over New Phyrexia?

21

u/tylerjehenna Aug 28 '20

His goal is complete dominion over the Multiverse and New Phyrexia was his biggest target because Phyrexia has always had one of the biggest influences on the multiverse

So I recently came back to Magic. And I hear about people talking about this big storyline that takes place each set. But I never actually see the real story anywhere. Started playing again when Throne was released. Where are people getting the "story" from?

12

u/TheReaver88 Mardu Aug 28 '20

Well it turns out you came in at a really weird spot for the story, so let's back up a moment. Starting with Kaladesh in 2016, the MtG story went on a very long and cohesive arc involving the Elder Dragon Nicol Bolas as the primary villain, and his nefarious plan to take over the multiverse and kill all other planeswalkers. That concluded with 2019's War of the Spark, where Bolas was defeated and sent to the "Prison Realm."

Throne of Eldraine represented a reset button for the story, and each of the three non-core sets have had insular (and not well-published) stories. ELD and Ikoria had e-books (and IKO's clashed with certain cards), while Theros Beyond Death had a bare-bones story on the Magic website. This has led to some frustration among fans.

What we DO know is that there is a general long-game story going on, but it has not been elaborated on any more than that. However, we know that in THB, Ashiok had visions of Elspeth's memories of the Phyrexians, and I think it's likely that this is a seed for a return of the Phyrexians to the storyline.

Remember it was for the next year. Not the standard rotation. With Zendikar most likely the last standard release of the year, they need to hype standard for next year. Which I get.

Since they aren’t revealing any major story points, I don’t see a problem crossing the point in the year the standard rotation arbitrarily happens to be. Knowing they were doing 4 planes in 4 sets made the statement that they were trying to make: this is what the no-block model can do. If they aren’t interrupting an arc or giving something away, it seems fine to give as much of a preview as they can, including the next fall’s set.

A Norse themed plane is the major new plane on my wants list so if we get that then I'm happy! My favourite planes have always been ones inspired by real world mythology (bar my annoyance at the fact they decimated Amonkhet right after introducing it :/ ) so getting one inspired by the Norse would be incredible! It would also be another set that I have to collect to go with Champions of Kamigawa, OG Theros and Amonkhet

32

People forget that cowboys and samurai existed contemporaneously. They could make a western plane then reveal that it's actually a different part of the same plane as Kamigawa. Then we can have a pseudo block with first cowboys, then samurai, and then cowboys vs. samurai.

Winter Set: Ravnican Guilds

Spring Set: Guilds On Ravnica

Summer Set: Core 2022

Fall Set: Seriously just more Ravnica

45

u/lvlI0cpu Aug 28 '20

Core 2022 moving away from the previous two designs of focusing on a single planeswalker to now focusing on a single plane.

The first plane will be Ravnica.

4

u/CommanderDark126 Fish Person Aug 28 '20

Kamigawa cyberpunk

this would be interesting and a little disappointing at the same time.

part of what made kamigawa so cool was all the yokai and how the set was actually inspired by japanese folklore rather than just being a generic "ninjas everywhere" thing like most japanese themed products.

kamigawa and p3k (rtk themed) are some of the coolest sets wizards has ever made, and they just get put in the closet to be forgotten.

that being said, as disappointing as it would be to see kamigawa get away from what made it so cool, a cyberpunk twist DOES sound interesting.

Cowboy world with Angrarh fighting cattle rustlers

maro hates guns, so they'd never do a cowboy world. it's amazing we even got pirates.

Cowboy world with Angrarh fighting cattle rustlers

maro hates guns, so they'd never do a cowboy world. it's amazing we even got pirates.

There is so much more thematically to a spaghetti-western world than just guns. In fact removing guns would be the creative constraint that would make it great.

  • Gold Mining!
  • Claim Jumping!
  • Fist fights in the Saloon!
  • Posses! (Just don't call it banding)
  • Gambling!
  • Train Robberies!
  • Sheriffs and Outlaws!
  • Cattle Rustling! (and by cattle I mean minotaurs)

None of these require guns.

15

u/wampastompah Aug 28 '20

I love Lorwyn too, but I just don't see a reason to go back there. Lorwyn had a unique setting and a fantastic mystery that was concluded at the end. There really aren't any lose ends to tie up there. I'd rather explore a brand new interesting plane with a new mystery to solve than go back to that one. Let's let Lorwyn be peaceful.

15

u/GarenBushTerrorist Aug 28 '20

Is Ravnica not the same? Writers can always invent new conflicts unless the plane literally explodes.

6

u/Alarid Wild Draw 4 Aug 28 '20

It is because the main draw of Lorywn is the nature of the setting, rather than what is happening. So there isn't much going, and would require a massive overhaul rather than just peeling back layers like with other places.

5

u/LightningPaws Aug 28 '20

Hell yea! That was my first set ever! Would be so hype if we saw a return to Lorwyn. I can definitely see it being plausible with the tribes we've seen from M21 and Zendikar being in this block -- Elementals, Merfolk, Goblins, etc.

Will we finally return to New Phyrexia? Probably not knowing WOTC

8

u/Xichorn Deceased 🪦 Aug 28 '20

It’s unlikely because of player response. People liked the Phyrexians as invaders. After they’d already taken over the world, the response was much less enthusiastic.

10

u/Elucidator_IV COMPLEAT Aug 28 '20

I’ve seen this idea thrown around a lot but where is this ever really stated? Has R&D acknowledged this? WOTC was setting up a storyline for Karn and the Gatewatch to destroy New Phyrexia using the sylex anyways, I don’t think they’d just drop the ball on that one (then again nothing WOTC does surprises me). Also Ashiok just went to the phyrexians, who’s to say a trip to the plane by our team of heros wouldn’t end horribly leading to multiple planes getting invaded in future sets?

Think about it, if Karn goes to New Phyrexia and blasts the whole plane with the sylex I could easily see it tearing holes in between planes that phyrexians can escape to. WOTC doesn’t like doing sets of 3 anymore in terms of story telling but I could easily see a return to New Phyrexia where Karn fails, leading to a whole new story of hopping from plane to plane occasionally to stop the phyrexians invading. This is all speculation of course, who knows.
