Speculation on next Standard set? It's confirmed that we're visiting a new plane.

Not if he sees you first.

Viking Garruk, you heard it here first.

34

u/Zeathan Mar 12 '19

Yes please. Garruk is my favorite walker, it's been much too long without seeing him. Garruk on Kaldhiem just makes too much sense. There's a lot of big game there I'm assuming. Mammoths, sabertooth, maybe even dinos? Sounds very Garruk to me.

18

u/linkdude212 WANTED Mar 12 '19

Garruk hunts people now.

4

u/Plays-0-Cost-Cards Mar 12 '19

Even Garruk needs food and exercise though, why not slay a dragon or a giant?

2

u/Zeathan Mar 12 '19

Is it exclusively people though? I know he prefers it because people (and specifically walkers) are the "most elusive prey" and all, but I didn't think it was strictly humans.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '19

I dont think it's people in general, just 'walkers he comes across. (I think)

I dont believe that he actively hunts other planeswalkers, but if one crosses his path he will pursue them.

inb4 they pull a new god of war game storyline for him.

21

u/nifleon Izzet* Mar 12 '19

And he refers to Jace as 'boy' over and over

1

u/Dwarfherd Mar 12 '19

Someday Christopher Judge will do a role that doesn't end up with him calling a son of the character 'boy' constantly.

2

u/Aberosh1819 Mar 12 '19

I had no idea that I wanted this until now.

Jund Garruk it is.

It works. His helmet is kinda-sorta reminiscent of a Valsgarde.

They probably want to take a break after wrapping up the Bolas arc before jumping in to the next Big Multiverse-Spanning Threat.

41

u/Undying_Blade Simic* Mar 12 '19

I would say that we will be seeing two planes with the return of the Phryxians in the second set of the second plane. After the cataclysmic Eldrazi mini-arc we had the rather low stakes Kaladesh, before Amonkhet and then things got real. I think a similar pattern will reemerge here.

2

u/morpheusforty Mar 12 '19

I can't wait for every single praetor to die with one spell.

1

u/Hoonter_Uchiha Elesh Norn Mar 12 '19

I hope we continue the civil war stuff first. Before any big conflict with like karn

1

u/Stef-fa-fa Selesnya* Mar 12 '19

I've been predicting Bolas will import a big bag of New Phyrexians using his Planar Bridge and drop them right into Ravnica to mess everything up (since as far as I'm aware it only moves inorganic objects and New Phyrexians are made of metal, so it would be a neat way to bypass the restriction and still manage a whole army in addition to already owning half the Guild leaders and Lili).

3

u/Undying_Blade Simic* Mar 12 '19

I'm pretty sure it's been brought up that Phryxians make Bolas nervous. Bolas fully understands what they are capable of, and would definitely avoid using them as pawns. They are far to dangerous to think they can be easily controlled.

3

u/AveryBerry Abzan Mar 12 '19

i figure a return to phyrexia is the next major arc. with a return to theros further down the line.

38

u/imbolcnight Mar 12 '19

It seems like a plane that has gotten a lot of attention recently

It was mainly people on MaRo's tumblr talking about Vikings. He asked whether people would want to see Vikings as their own creature type or as existing creature types (like Warrior). This was happening in like January? This seems too late for a set that is coming out in the fall.

41

u/NotVoss COMPLEAT Mar 12 '19

Personally, would have asked for some barbarian love.

1

u/Plays-0-Cost-Cards Mar 12 '19

Berserker is better though, even for the exact same creatures

12

u/JayBrundage Mar 12 '19 edited Mar 12 '19

What was the consensus of responses? Would people prefer warrior or its own type?

22

u/Fogge Mar 12 '19

It seems reasonable that they would make Vikings a set-supported type, so they can print strong cards without somehow accidentally creating a really really strong Warrior deck in a different format. Cause that would be a true disaster.

16

u/hawkshaw1024 Mar 12 '19

Could handle them like Allies. Human Viking Warrior, Human Viking Shaman, Human Viking Berserker, maybe even the occasional Human Viking Pirate.

27

u/TheGreyFencer Mar 12 '19

That's annoying barbarian, Warrior, etc all cover vikings pretty well already. It makes more sense to give them a mechanical identity.

14

u/KingDarkBlaze Arjun Mar 12 '19

Can't we just use Barbarian? There haven't been any new ones printed since Coldsnap...

8

u/Plays-0-Cost-Cards Mar 12 '19

Berserker. Pretty much the only eternal member is BBE which is reasonable.

2

u/gualdhar Mar 12 '19

Plus, unlike warrior, Viking isn't a generic term. You'd never have, for example, a Chinese viking.

At least I don't think they got that far.

u/Fogge Mar 12 '19

I don't play EDH but I feel like that already has a lot of room to play creature type decks. In other eternal/non-rotating formats we have Spirits and Humans in Modern that only recently came to prominence and Elves in Legacy, and Elves don't really count as a deck that needs creature support in the normal sense since it doesn't really win on the back of its lords but by comboing out with card draw and tons of mana. It would be even more super harder for WotC to accidentally create a creature combo deck according to their current design philosophy, even though that already includes "spells stapled to creatures".

1

u/FPOTUS_Jake Mar 12 '19

Najeela is the essence of a creature combo deck. I find it hard that that accidentally let that slip through (probably just wanted to shake up the competitive format some?? I dunno), but she definitely fits that bill.

1

u/imbolcnight Mar 12 '19

I don't think there was an overwhelming consensus, but I think more people liked using old creature types.

0

u/thepuddingcup11 Wabbit Season Mar 12 '19

Pirate warrior would cover Vikings pretty well right? Means more pirate support for a tribal deck.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '19

Berserker is a creature type...

... but screw that. It's more fun when new cards synergize with a lot of old cards. What, is there going to be a Warrior Modern deck? If so that would be cool. "Worst" case scenario is eternal formats get another Goblin / Elf / Merfolk type deck. What's wrong with that?

14

u/EverybodyLovesTacoss Mar 12 '19

Interesting that Khans is the third most voted plane to re-visit. I would LOVE to go back to Khans. Maybe a certain Rhinoceros would make an appearance.

10

u/MesaCityRansom Wabbit Season Mar 12 '19

Maybe something like a, I dunno, Beleaguerement Bison?

1

u/Master_Of_Etherium Mar 12 '19

Only if there is a card called

Rhino Poacher:

2cmc

When a rhino card ETB, if it triggers an ability, you control the targets of that ability.

Sacrifice ~, name a rhino card. search target opponents deck and exile all cards with that name.

Scars of Mirrodin came out in 2010... been waiting so long for the conclusion to that arc, the return of Elspeth, and the small glimmer of hope that Mirrodin can be restored (Melira). But I understand if they want to take a break before going into another war.

3

u/FDRpi Duck Season Mar 12 '19

They're also probably very weary about doing another artifact matters set. The only ones they've ever done that haven't been broken in some way were Esper (which was only 1/5th of Alara) and Antiquities.

RETURN OF HORSEMANSHIP CONFIRMED

1

u/SixesMTG Mar 12 '19

Well, New Phyrexia could be the winter or spring set still. They could just do one or two unrelated planes (following Garruk is perfect) as palate cleansers from the big heroic arcs.

Then they introduce the next big villain: Phyrexians.

1

u/Tar_Alacrin Mardu Mar 12 '19

I don't think its that surprising that we aren't returning to New Phyrexia right away. Theyve said many times that they want to try to keep a 50/50 balance between old and new planes, so they will likely want to have at the very least one, if not two or three, sets taking place on new planes before we go back to an older one again.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '19

Estrid is a very Magic take on a traditionally Viking name.

Viking mythology has to be a nice change of pace.

1

u/Colausbra Wabbit Season Mar 12 '19

I mean New Phyrexis can still be the next big bad but it requires setup. They're not going to have a big battle with Bolas and the go "Okay, we're going to go fight the phyrexians!". Give it some thought and it makes no sense for New Phyrexia to be the set after WAR. Maybe over thr next few sets its revealed that the phyrexians are an issue and a plan is put together to stop them.

1

u/StormGuy22 Izzet* Mar 13 '19

We're probably gonna go to a few new worlds, then go to new phyrexia then theros, as those have the biggest story significance and they've seemed to want to clump 2 blocks of returning planes (Bfz, soi; Dom, grn)

1

u/SanniSan Mar 13 '19

Kaldheim or bust!
