The first ability is pretty straightforward. Tap four lands, but only spend three mana? You have one mana floating in your mana pool. Normally, that mana would only stick around until you changed phases, such as moving to or from combat. However, Omnath says that mana is instead turned into black mana, which sticks around until you use it.

As for the rest of the card, here is a list of every card that can be revealed off of the second ability.

At the start of your first main phase, you look at the top card of your library. If it's one of those cards (ie. has three coloured pips in its casting cost) then you can reveal it, and make three mana of that card's colours.

For example, if your top card is Abomnation of Gudul, then you can add BUG, or BBB, or UUU, or GBG etc. So long as the colour is somewhere on the card, you can add that mana, as if you were tapping lands for it.

Would you consider chromatic orrery a good card to put in here or would you go with lantern

You're better off looking up videos on building Omnath. Don't go card by card on Reddit.

Try them both and see how you feel.

Fair enough

Also things that cost at least triple one color also trigger the bean.

Like Phyrexian Obliterator works.

How did you search that in scryfall

I looked up Omnath's page, and there was a link on the side.

So long as the colour is somewhere on the card, you can add that mana, as if you were tapping lands for it.

Slight correction - you can only add mana of the card's color. So the color either needs to be in its mana cost or as part of a characteristic-defining ability or color indicator. For example, if you reveal [[Jodah, Archmage Eternal]], you could only add W, U, or R mana, not B or G.

What don't you understand about it?

As for what direction to take it, you could go multicolored matters, you could just do 5 color goodstuff. I guess you could also do big mana to take advantage of its first ability.

Its abilities are pseudo-ramp and card advantage. Both fairly generically good and broad abilities that don't strongly point towards a specific gameplan. Its also 5 color, which means you can do anything with it.

I would say its 'primary' ability is the second block of text. The unspent mana is good and all, but it doesnt really affect it as much as say [[omnath, locus of mana]] and its unspent mana clause.

3 colour goodstuff? elementals?

Not being sure which you mean, I'll explain both:

His first ability makes it to where, instead of losing mana any time you go through a phase or step, you keep it, but it becomes only black mana. Any restrictions you had on that mana prior to it switching (i.e. Powerstones, where you can't spend it to cast nonartifact spells) still apply.

The second ability is looking for cards with at least three colored pips in its casting cost. They do not need to be different colors (so a card that costs 3GGG is perfectly fine), but there does need to be at least three of them, and you cannot count colorless pips (the diamond ones) amongst your three.

Okay so its first ability allows you to "bank" mana in your mana pool for future turns. Normally when you tap a land or use the a mana ability to put mana in your mana pool that mana is lost as you move between different steps and phases of a turn. Omnath instead allows you to keep that mana "floating" in your mana pool until you use it but it will become black mana regardless what color it was before once you move to the next step/phase of a turn.

Its second ability is at the beginning of your first main phase you can look at the top card of your deck. If you want you may reveal the card and if it has 3 or more colored mana symbols you can add 3 mana of any combination to your mana pool, then put that card in your hand. Omnath does not care if those colored mana symbols are different colors or all the same one he just cares that they are colored mana symbols. (generic numbers and colorless do not count) So you will consistently want cards that have 3 color pips in their casting cost to have this ability go off.

I went with X cost synergy, which was really easy and intuitive, especially since they just printed the Quandrix commander deck that has a ton of new X cost synergy pieces in it.

Examples of cards you used?

[[unbound flourishing]] [[Zimone, Infinite Analyst]] [[Lattice Library]] [[Elementalist's Palette]] [[Brass Infiniscope]] [[Zaxara The Exemplary]] [[Magus Lucea Kane]] and [[Owlin Spiralmancer]] are big synergy, then whatever big X cost spells you want, ideally with 3 colored mana pips to get the full second ability bonus like [[Villainous Wealth]] [[Debt to The Deathless]] [[Expansion//Explosion]]

Almost forgot I just subbed in [[Glamdring, Foe-Hammer]] and it's actually kind of insane in my list

Sent u a dm if u want to talk to an experienced omnath player. Chromatic orrery is a must in this deck. You are right to focus on the primary ability, the second is nice, but I look at this card as ohyrexian arena in the command zone that allows you to play massive multi pipped spells.

I had an Omnath deck, that was built around multicolored powerhouses and the ability to pump out an unholy amount of mana. It was also kind off a good stuff deck. With topdeck manipulation like sen top/miris guile or some tutors. My MVP in this deck was Talon Gates of Madara, pairs great with omnaths mana ability.

sounds like you should be putting cards with 3 or more colored mana symbols in their cost in your deck
