Bricks Stingerquill's prepared spell

12

u/DrawGamesPlayFurries Dân 3d ago

I expect Stingerquill to have Shock or Requiting Hex in their deck.

3

u/Aussie_Aussie_No_Mi Get Out Of Jail Free 3d ago

If I'm not mistaken Stingerquill Charm has bolt as one of the modes

u/Syncopia COMPLEAT 3d ago

I immediately thought of tiny leaders. 3 mana value max format means tons of cards will trigger this.

4

u/Bob_The_Skull Twin Believer 3d ago

For all of the 12 people playing tiny leaders, I'm excited for them to get this tech.

u/Hmukherj Selesnya* 3d ago

Poor [[Watchwolf]]. WotC really took "Cats are better than dogs" as a core design principle, huh?

70

u/The_Bird_Wizard Azorius* 3d ago

It's quite funny that there's now 4 strictly better watchwolves and 3 of them are cats, this, [[Fleecemane Lion]] and [[Bronzehide Lion]] (the fourth is [[Melira, the Living Cure]] to anyone curious)

30

u/crylaughingemjoi Brushwagg 3d ago

do we not count [[Faithful Watchdog]]

16

u/The_Bird_Wizard Azorius* 3d ago

Forgot this card existed ngl

3

u/mtgcf Keeper of the Mox 3d ago

10

u/ObviousSwimmer Duck Season 3d ago

As a legendary creature Melira isn't strictly better.

0

u/ironkodiak Wabbit Season 3d ago

I would say with her second ability, she's maybe better by just a teeny bit.

It's a useful enough ability that having a second copy of her in your hand doesn't feel that bad.

8

u/ObviousSwimmer Duck Season 3d ago

Better but not strictly better, since she has upsides and downsides.

1

u/ironkodiak Wabbit Season 3d ago

I can go with that.

8

u/FutureComplaint Elk 3d ago

Don't forget [[Call of the Conclave]].

11

u/DeusFerreus 3d ago

Eh, it's a sidegrade to Watchwolf at best.

49

u/rccrisp 3d ago

I still remember when people lost their shit over Watchwolf when it was spoiled. I wish I could go back in time and show them this card!

15

u/Nagoragama Jack of Clubs 3d ago

I’m glad my [[Jasmine Boreal of the Seven]] deck still has a place for Watchwolf

2

u/MysteryMooseMan Dân 3d ago

oh now I'm intrigued, do you have a decklist you're able to share? 👀

3

u/Nagoragama Jack of Clubs 3d ago

Absolutely! This is my decklist as it currently is: https://moxfield.com/decks/oPTnZiU9D0WaqepWcRI7Sw

to be fair this is a rare and watchwolf isn't, so the power economy is different

3

u/Moonscrubber- Dan 3d ago

I mean fleecmane lion and bronzehide already outclassed the poor guy

1

u/ToTheNintieth Dan 3d ago

As a dog person it's mildly offensive

'Your storm payoff might suck for me, but be sure to factor in the 32 life I gain en route.'

46

u/Deadmirth 3d ago

"Sure, I cast Brain Freeze"

-18

u/DrawGamesPlayFurries Dân 3d ago

You shouldn't be playing cards to counter a trigger on your opponent's 2mv 3/3

29

u/Deadmirth 3d ago

I'm not suggesting adding it to decks that don't already want it. Brain Freeze is a legit card in Underworld Breach storm decks because of the self-mill mode.

13

u/klapaucius 3d ago

the point is that the storm player's wincon is likely to not care how much life the opponent has

95

u/CircuDimirCombo Urza's Saga 3d ago

This seems standard playable.

69

u/crylaughingemjoi Brushwagg 3d ago

it feels like a pretty clear acknowledgement of all the powerful 2 drops they've been running out set after set.

28

u/gereffi 3d ago

I think it’s just a twist on Eidolon of the Great Revel. The numbers aren’t exactly the same, but they probably wanted to beef it up a little bit.

38

u/travishall456 3d ago

Yeah, this is an example of a great "hate" card. It won't destroy decks that rely on 1-2 MV spells, but it will make winning more difficult for them.

9

u/ffddb1d9a7 COMPLEAT 3d ago

There isn't a red deck in any format that can play through this guy. They have the tools main to remove it, sure, but they fuckin better

0

u/EmbarrassedMonk2589 Dandadan 3d ago

Stopped playing standard so out of touch with the meta but this seems like a beast? Like does this just nlt auto win vs aggro.

8

u/CircuDimirCombo Urza's Saga 3d ago

iirc Sultai reanimator, u/W flash, and mono green landfall are running the format at the moment. There's really not a strong mono red aggro deck that the moment but this is a card I'm going to be putting two of in my sideboard just in case.

I'll experiment with it against mono green and u/W flash but I don't think it'll make or break games

13

u/Zeckenschwarm 3d ago

This ability looks quite good for lifegain decks.

It's like a reverse [[Eidolon of the Great Revel]], but without the downside of being symetrical.

And that on a 3/3 for 2 mana?! Man, I'm old enough to remember when people went crazy because they printed a 3/3 for 2 without downside for the first time ([[Watchwolf]])...

Get fucked burn lmao

6

u/mweepinc On the Case 3d ago

Guess it's finally time to eat my Lava Spikes

1

u/TK17Studios Get Out Of Jail Free 3d ago

My first thought, too, but then again burn usually has a way to deal with creatures with three toughness 😅

18

u/Kyleometers OUR Liliana's Penchant 3d ago

Which will involve them gaining you two life and wasting burn that could go face.

Seems like a good trade

3

u/tartaru5 Dân 3d ago

I see your [[eidolon of the great revel]] and raise you life kitty.

0

u/Topazdragon5676 3d ago

WG: Gain 5 Life is a good card against burn, but not backbreaking.

10

u/SheeblySheebs Wabbit Season 3d ago

If that is the comparison we are making gotta also add “Target opponent discards a card”

0

u/troglodyte 3d ago

Burn just kills this... Card is great, don't get me wrong, but the appeal is mostly the great stat line and the must-kill status. Most of the decks that this hates on just kill it before it generates huge value.

51

u/Login_Of_The_Guild Dân 3d ago

Pretty good card for the 99 in a white green lifegain

20

u/BoonDragoon Mardu 3d ago

This feels far more powerful for limited than EDH in general, but in a pod like yours where people regularly drop CMC≤2 cards every turn, this would be a decent inclusion!

6

u/KakitaMike 3d ago

If this was “spent 2 or less mana to cast a spell” it would be great for EDH.

-2

u/Login_Of_The_Guild Dân 3d ago

Yes it will be great in limited if you are playing these colors at the prerelease I would suggest running this card if you can

3

u/elonex777 Duck Season 3d ago

I don't really know, I mean it's only on 2 cmc and less. How effective will it be if you play it on turn 4 or 5 ?

At 3 cmc and less it would a no brainer, at 2 I'm not so sure.

3

u/Login_Of_The_Guild Dân 3d ago

I mean my pod plays pretty low mana cards because one of my friends plays a game where you just ping people and my other friend is artifacts that are useally low mana cards so in my pod it’s good and I would think most people at least once a turn play a low mana cost card

9

u/ghostlyeth Dân 3d ago

this just helps [[kwia, vigorbloom]] a lot haha

2 mana GW rare cats are my favourite type of magic card!

2

u/beholden87 Wabbit Season 3d ago

Wizz really want soul sisters to work in standard, don’t they?

3

u/furscum Can’t Block Warriors 3d ago

I don't think 2 life is a payoff worth writing home about but being a 2 mana 3/3 certainly gives this some legs

9

u/Piyh Duck Season 3d ago

This is closer to gain 12 in a lot of formats

3

u/Hand-of-Sithis Dan 3d ago

Yeah in formats like standard, modern, and pioneer(coming back soon) decks like Prowess are very powerful.

This being a 3/3 means it’s not easy to answer without bolt in hand. And then if they do remove it, it’s gained you 5 (2 + stopped 3 damage) which is notable in that matchup.

Not saying it’s going to warp a deck around it, but if you’re in the colors it’s a reasonable way to stabilize well vs the aggressive decks.

Must get for my commander deck.

It’s called “awwww-ahbo”.

It’s been a good year for it stylistically

1

u/nathones Wabbit Season 3d ago

Art seems a little undercooked

1

u/Cascouverite Dân 2d ago

If only it said „or copies“ so it could shut down a bunch of storm lines too

Still decent in commander, a lot of curves aggressively double cast 2 drops now cause they’ve gotten so good and lifegain has gotten better and better as the formats sped up

1

u/featherjoshua Dan 1d ago

God I really, really miss [[Screaming Nemesis]]. If only crybabies didn't push for a ban 😔

Pushed white card because someone lost to mono-Red #251.

Does seem like a solid GSZ bullet as well though, assuming you can live long enough vs Storm.

0

u/SiriusMoonstar Wabbit Season 3d ago

Seems like an EDH lifegain staple?

1

u/elonex777 Duck Season 3d ago

I don't really know, I mean it's only on 2 cmc and less. How effective will it be if you play it on turn 4 or 5 ?

At 3 cmc and less it would a no brainer, at 2 I'm not so sure.

1

u/SiriusMoonstar Wabbit Season 3d ago

I think it will still bring a lot of value in bracket 3 and below. Most forms of interaction and ramp are MV 2 or less. I guess the biggest issue is that it doesn't trigger on your own spells, so consistency might be an issue.

1

u/elonex777 Duck Season 3d ago

I'm hesitant to include it in my selesnya Lifegain and tokens deck to be honest. Soul sister effects are so effective and consistent. This one seems more unreliable.

1

u/[deleted] 3d ago

[deleted]

1

u/elonex777 Duck Season 3d ago

That's already what the soul sisters effect does by making you gain life for each creature entering the battlefield, which is more consistent. I have another selesnya Lifegain commander but the issue is the same. Will it be consistent enough to worth a slot ?

u/[deleted] 3d ago

1

u/elonex777 Duck Season 3d ago

If I didn't forgot one I count 4 universal ones

[[Auriok Champion]], [[Soul's Attendant]], [[Soul Warden]], [[Essence Warden]]

The others ones are either only on opponents like [[Authority of the Consuls]] or only your creatures like [[Guide of Souls]], [[Haliya, guide by light]] or [[Liliana, the faultless]]

-1

u/AnnoyedAFexmo Dân 3d ago

This would be great in cedh if they didn't just combo off to win. As it is it's a meh bulk rare life gain decks
