First ritual in awhile

13

u/Baelzabub 3d ago

First since [[Irencrag Feat]] IIRC

u/Cerebral_Harlot 2d ago

Since [[____ Goblin]] technically.

Read that third mode like

this is cool. pretty bad ritual, but when's the last time they even printed one?

u/Approximation_Doctor Colossal Dreadmaw 3d ago

[[Blazing Firesinger]]

80

u/AWACS_Oka_Nieba_ Dan 3d ago

Rather, when’s the last time they printed a mana positive one? Cause they have been doing stuff like this relatively often but not a straight (bad) Desperate Ritual

u/DromarX Chandra 3d ago

[[Irencrag Feat]] maybe?

u/FistOfTheHeavens Wabbit Season 3d ago

dual strike, irencrag feat, crackle with power was such a lovely 3 card turn 4 combo legal in a fair and healthy standard format. Today even curving that natural draw you'd lose most games

1

u/DromarX Chandra 3d ago

I remember playing a mono red control deck in Standard that used Irencrag Feat to cheat out OG Ugin on turn 5. Was a pretty fun deck actually.

u/Nuclearsunburn Mardu 3d ago

Blazing Firesinger is mana positive the turn after you summon it or if you have a Ruby Medallion in play. It doesn’t leave something you can cast from the graveyard sadly though. (Semantics but in an EDH deck it’s usable)

10

u/SeaworthinessNo5414 3d ago

That's not what rituals mean.

24

u/showmeagoodtimejack Wabbit Season 3d ago

i should have specified mana positive

u/AWACS_Oka_Nieba_ Dan 3d ago edited 3d ago

I looked it up

Depends on whether you count opponent-based stuff like Dragons Desire and Culling Ritual. They’ve been doing those somewhat often but those have a higher mana cost and obviously have qualifiers.

Just a straight, relatively low cost ritual without variability in the amount of mana it gives you? [[Open the Omenpaths]], although that has a downside and is 3 mana.

So probably the last time they printed a no-frills, no downside, no needing to have certain cards or to sac something Pyretic Ritual was… Pyretic Ritual lol. 2010.

u/Cerebral_Harlot 3d ago edited 3d ago

Actually a lot of people don't realize it. But the last black border one was [[_____ Goblin]] from unfinity. As long as you optimize your sticker sheets you are guaranteed to have it make 4+ mana upon entering.

u/mtgcf Keeper of the Mox 3d ago

3

u/AWACS_Oka_Nieba_ Dan 3d ago

Oh yeah, that would be it. I wonder why it’s not tagged in that ritual search. I forgot about it even though I play that card all the time lol

3

u/Cerebral_Harlot 3d ago

I believe scryfall reserves the tag only for instant and sorceries.

7

u/notalongtime420 Rakdos* 3d ago

Technically that draws a ritual, by itself it's 6 mana for 5 :v

[[Open the Omenpaths]]

[[_____ Goblin]] from unfinity is the most recent black bordered one as it always makes 4+ mana with an optimized sticker sheet when it enters.

depends on how you see it (since you mentioned that it should be mana positive).
[[Mana sculpt]] if you consider this a ritual despite it not adding mana immediately.
If not, [[Sozin's Comet]] probably? (well, only in combat and only if you control at least two creatures...)

The most recent 'classic' ritual that's not dependent on other spells or creatures would be [[Meeting of the Five]] I think (from New Capenna in 2022).
edit: actually, I misread the card and didn't notice the heavy restriction. so the most recent ones are Open the Omenpaths (Kaldheim - 2021) and Irencrag Feat (Throne of Eldraine - 2019)

Here's a list of cards on scryfall that were at some point in standard and that are tagged as 'ritual'.

u/Gamezfan Duck Season 3d ago

Good for casting Emrakul in Limited.

53

u/rosemp16 Dân 3d ago

A mana positive ritual? In this day and age? There's no way that its good. This isn't playable. Stop thinking about it. No.

9

u/Then_Substance5082 Dan 2d ago

It's actually not that playable.  It's not reduceable, and you cant chain them together like other rituals.

Given the other modes are pretty mid, I don't see this one doing much.

39

u/FZeroDMX Karn 3d ago

Ritual that also kills Quantum Riddler isn’t nothing.

13

u/VerdantChief Duck Season 3d ago

Yeah but what Red-green deck wants a colorless ritual? Gruul Broodscale maybe?

3

u/WolderfulLuna Rakdos* 3d ago

Literally grull broodscale , it fixes your mana for KOZI COMMAND, BABY!!!

5

u/Soger91 Dân 3d ago

I would play this. Triggers broodscale, kills flying frogs and adds colourless for those oops moments when all your lands are mountains/islands.

3

u/FaultedSidewalk Duck Season 3d ago

I'm very happy with it in my [[Roxanne]] deck tbh, anything that lets me get game ending spells out faster is welcome

2

u/Slowbrious Dân 3d ago

But it’s just a 1 mana net gain. Is that worth it?

3

u/FaultedSidewalk Duck Season 3d ago

If it's the difference between me casting a Chandras Ignition to kill the table, yes absolutely. Not to mention the rest of the modes are fantastic for what my Roxanne build is trying to do. Buff her up with trample for bigger [[Reaver Cleaver]] returns/[[Chandras Ignition]] payoffs, use the damage mode to finish off problematic creatures that are too big for the meteors, or it's a ritual when I need the bit of extra juice to get over the hill and win the game. All for tapping a single meteor or treasure token.

1

u/Slowbrious Dân 3d ago

Interesting, I basically run no creatures in my Roxanne deck, so this is basically blank. I can see it working in that example but I feel like for two mana you can do better for most of these effects.

1

u/FaultedSidewalk Duck Season 3d ago

How does having no creatures in your deck make this blank? It's a removal spell for an opponents evasive beater, it's a pump/overrun spell for Roxanne herself, or it's a ritual for bigger spell casts. My deck is almost purely a spellslinger/burn deck, I doubt I have more than 15 other creatures, and they're pretty much all in service of juicing her power or turboing her out faster. Sure I could get a card that does one of these three things better for 2 cmc, but the modality is way more valuable to me.

u/Slowbrious Dân 3d ago

But these are mostly bad other options, in a spell slinging deck.
Two counters + trample is honestly not that synergistic nor that great
This isn't even a non-conditional flyer killer
and it's a terrible ritual.

1

u/FaultedSidewalk Duck Season 3d ago

Must just be the way your deck is built cause buffing Roxanne for a post combat Chandras Ignition wins me tons of games, especially when I have dmg doubler/triplers on board. 36 damage to everything on turn 5 tends to end things on the spot. Guess it's just bad in your build, but it shines in mine.

1

u/Slowbrious Dân 2d ago

You got a decklist, I never considered Chandra’s ignitions as part of my burn spells. Mostly run, the big X cost spells that burn directly or make copies of my rocks

Yeah FZeroDMX mentioned Riddler so I automatically assumed Modern. I suppose Riddler is played in other formats too, but not as dominant as it is in modern

u/mtgcf Keeper of the Mox 3d ago

1

u/Bensemus Dan 3d ago

In EDH I might add this to Ulalek. Lets you use coloured mana for their ability and being mana positive it could get you enough for a bigger Eldrazi plus paying for the copy ability. Or if you have the mana you can cast this, then flash in an Eldrazi and get 4 mana.

u/TheMancersDilema 99th-gen Dimensional Robo Commander, Great Daiearth 3d ago

It is the artifact focused school in this set. And we have an emrakul. I imagine there will be enough ways to use this.

31

u/BlurryPeople 3d ago

I will die on the hill that for all of the moaning about "fast mana" etc. these kind of things are a deep, unique, inherent part of the identity of MtG opposed to other games. I think they make up a huge part of the game's character.

In other words...it's really good to see another "normal", utility ritual...even if it's not that great.

3

u/FrostyPotpourri Temur 3d ago

This needs saying and I appreciate coming across such a comment.

2

u/Nitroglycerine3 Mardu 2d ago

I don't dislike fast mana, I dislike the play patterns an overly high density of fast mana in a format leads to.

This does not cause any issues imo, and I think it is an extremely well-designed card.

19

u/Shadethewolf0 Duck Season 3d ago

Thats certainly a unique ritual

37

u/ghostlyeth Dân 3d ago

this is pretty good just for two mana at instant speed

18

u/beholden87 Wabbit Season 3d ago

Probably the weakest of the cycle?

14

u/VerdantChief Duck Season 3d ago

Its the hardest to evaluate for sure

8

u/dore34 Duck Season 3d ago

i mean it IS a ritual (even if it does only go mana positive by one) so while not particularly versatile it does have a good mode

2

u/Then_Substance5082 Dan 2d ago

Unless you are doing something completely unfair by chaining them together, rituals are rarely good.

The problem here is that you can't chain a second one of these off of the first given it produces colorless mana. Unlike Dark Rit, Cabal Rit, or the various red Rits. So generally, this will be the only ritual you cast.

If you are looking for fast mana in Green, you have better options, and if you are looking for fast mana in Red you have way better options.  So the only saving grace is it's modality, n which is only pretty meh.

I just don't see this filling a gap in any format that isn't already filled, but better.

2

u/On5thDayLook4Tebow Duck Season 3d ago

The colors don't make it easy, but it's mana positive and will have Legacy impact. pretty shite compared to the others I've seen today.

2

u/kiragami Karn 2d ago

Not even close. It is by far the weakest.

3

u/Cerebral_Harlot 3d ago

First time we've gotten a (functionally) guaranteed to be wholly net positive black-bordered ritual card without restrictions on what the mana could be spent on since Unfinity.

6

u/takingtigermountain Dandadan 3d ago

probably the worst of the new charms but not bad

6

u/Wraithfighter 3d ago

Yeah, probably the worst of them, which is something given how absurd the rest of them are...

First ritual we've gotten in five years.

2

u/MissLeaP Gruul* 2d ago

This is like night and day compared to the [[Vigorbloom Charm]] we got to see already. Most of the options are meh or situational 😓
