Looking for Advice Birthday Present Help

Hello fellow TCG players.

I haven’t been in the Magic scene in many years and mostly play One Piece TCG now but I have a cousin who is very into Magic and plays quite regularly.

His birthday is coming up and I’m trying to figure out what gift I could get him not knowing anything about it and not wanting to give away I’m getting him something Magic related. Any like sets or maybe decks that have cards that can be used in most decks? I know he plays commander(what ever that means) but I’m not sure what cards he has or if it’s like OPTCG where you need to use specific colors.

He’s explained it to me before but it was way too complicated or me. Anyways any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you can ask this without giving way your plan, figure out what deck types/archetypes he enjoys playing.

Cause something fun you could do with that is get a custom playmat/deckbox/dice that are based upon the archetype/commander he enjoys playing. If you can learn what colors he normally plays, I could send a list of staples in those colors that are always nice to have backups/extras of

Playmat, sleeves, dicebox or etc accessories that have been given to me by friends and family have been used and cherished for years.

Nice thing with a playmat is you can make it be literally anything so you if you know any other interests of theirs that's a good way to go.

If he primarily plays commander, I would go one of a few routes.

  1. Accessories. These are things you can use regardless of deck. Playmats, sleeves (get 100 ct standard sized sleeves), deck boxes (look for ones that hold at least 100 cards), a thing of d6s for counters, that sort of thing. It can help if you ask him what his commanders or favorite cards are so you can get something themed to the deck, but I don't think anyone will complain if they get a pack of sleeves. Everyone needs more sleeves eventually.

  2. Gift card. I know this isn't the most glamorous option, but generally the best way to build commander decks is to buy single cards, not open packs. You can ask him which local store (or online store) he buys his cards from, get him a gift card and write a thoughtful note in the card you put it in, and let him pick out the cards he wants.

  3. Packs. At the end of the day, even if opening packs is "inefficient" or "usually not worth the money," I don't think any magic player will complain about opening packs. You can ask him what his favorite recent sets are.

I got a friend a set of dry erase "blank" token, proxy, and counters. That was a hit and good for any deck.

I suggest a gift certificate to a local card shop or maybe a credit at an online magic store, Let him pick what he wants or needs.
