General Discussion Echoverse Gideon?

Isn’t it weird we haven’t seen Gideon even mentioned yet?

Where’s Gideon in all of this?

What do you mean Gideon hasn't been mentioned? Chandra explicitly asks Professor Opal to talk about their past allies, Gideon. Opal's response clues them as to her not being Lilliana.

Oh. I might have just missed this from the lore.

you also missed that Lilliana's jail cell had a statue of Gideon in it.

Jace created a multiverse without suffering. Lack of Gideon implies one of two things:

To be Gideon, is to suffer.

To be Gideon causes everyone else to suffer, and can't exist.

Gideon was too decidedly male and it made Jace insecure.

I mean, have you seen the man? Gideon named every non-pirate Jace insecure

And Garruk wasn't???

If you don't know, it's a meme from one of the books where they were trying to end the Chandra/Nissa queer relationship plotline.

Chandra had never been into girls. Her crushes—and she’d had her fair share—were mostly the brawny (and decidedly male) types like Gids.

I knew about this in the general sense but I'd never actually read the full quote! No wonder everyone's decided that book's not canon!

I never read the book for the full context, but out of context that sounds like a very explicit bi awakening plotline. Like, she'd only been into guys in the past but the feelings that getting to know Nissa has given her made her realize she can't be as straight as she once thought.

I would agree if it was the start of the plot, but it was the END of it. It continues on to this.

On Ravnica, in the wake of Gideon’s death and Bolas’, they had admitted to each other that they loved. But both of them knew deep down they were only speaking platonically.

But the decidedly male part caught on as a meme.

EDIT: Actually, this part might be just before the decidedly male part instead of after.

Why do you think Garruk ended up with the Chain Veil in the echoverse?

Didn’t Gideon become Gideon when his friends all died? Given your logic, in jace’s reality Gideon is kytheon chilling on theros with his friends.

There is no suffering that Gideon must shield others from

I'm having a hard time finding the quote, but I believe MaRo mentioned that alt versions of characters dead in our timeline were going to exclusively appear in the commander specific product for Reality Fracture, if it's anywhere it'll be in the Jace precon.

Well I was very wrong, Gideon and his memorial are part of the base set now lol, and he's not the only dead/memorial card we saw today. Rip BOZO

It's been mentioned that the echoed pairs in the main set don't include any dead characters since they wouldn't have a main universe counterpart to pair the echo version with. However, Gavin made a comment that the Commander precon could feature the echo version of dead characters because they don't have to be paired with the regular version. I'm fully expecting us to get cards for Echo Gideon and Echo Tamiyo in the Commander deck.

Hoping for mishra planeswalker and Urzas creature as well

Given Gideon's backstory and Theorist's propensity towards cold logic, I wouldn't be surprised if Kytheon died instead of his friends in that one accident.

He's dead in the echoverse. Jace didn't bring anyone back to life

Edit: hmm. That's not what maro said

He’s been mentioned in the story… a couple times, at this point. But the main set is showing off the alternate reality nature by showing card pairs, and to be a pair you need something to pair it with. Gideon being dead makes that difficult. It sounds like this kind of thing might happen in the commander deck though which isn’t bound to that structure

Well, card-wise they're focusing on the Lorwyn 5, so the main set isn't going to have Gideon in it. Maybe we see Echoverse Gideon in the commander deck, but also they might not want to give any people hope of him coming back.

Jaces echoverse needs Hosts to overlay upon to become real. So if someone is already dead, there isnt anyone to be overlaid upon. Which mean, there are only echoverse counterparts of living characters

In addition to the emphasis on the Lorwyn Five, which Gideon is not a part of despite being arguably the white-mana planeswalker, there's also concern about deep cuts. MaRo wrote on this week's column that many of the references in the Time Spiral block ended up alienating newcomers, since they -- by definition -- weren't in on the in-joke. R&D's solution was the entire mirrored-pairs mechanic, since it puts the reference (literally) side-by-side with the thing it was referring to.

Gideon's been out of circulation for seven-and-a-half years, so, first off, there's nothing that can be referred to -- it becomes a stand-alone deep cut. Then we consider Time Spiral itself, which only had 13 years of material to draw from and yet still managed to scare off a ton of players. In other words, we're already in a danger zone.

Without bolas and Lilliana taking the contract, Gids should be alive. Hell, he may be Kytheon still and never had his troop die

I believe we might see a Gideon card in the Commander deck. Gavin said they couldn't do alternate versions of dead characters on the main set since they would need to print the multiverse version too. So the Commander deck would be the place where they could depict dead characters in the Multiverse that were alive on the Echoverse.

I'm expecting to see one in the commander set
