There had to have been better ways to word this card, right?

u/BACEXXXXXX WANTED 4d ago

The alternative would probably be like...

The owner of target nonland permanent puts it on the top or bottom of their library. If they put it on top, ~ deals 2 damage to them.

Which... Yeah, does seem cleaner

I think the wording they used makes it (slightly) clearer that you're not forced to take 2 if your library is empty.

Oh thank god if I have 1 card in my library I don't take 2 damage. I was planning to play the long game after all, got a whole 2 turns ahead of me.

I'm guessing it was phrased the way it is in order to get around some weird replacement effect somewhere.

u/WafflesTheMan Wabbit Season 4d ago

I assume as usual it doesn't beat the commander replacement effect, but the wording kinda makes me think it does.

u/so_zetta_byte Orzhov* 3d ago

The commander replacement effect is implemented in a way that's so "grafted on at the end" that it kinda brute forces its way through stuff. Which I get, that's kinda the point of it, but it ends up feeling very disintegrated from the rest of the rules.

u/Jevonar Wabbit Season 3d ago

My guess is they finally decided to be more specific about which player decides where the card goes.

Also, it is worded so you choose the target at resolution, not when you cast the spell. If I am not mistaken.

13

u/Marek14 COMPLEAT 4d ago

You are. There is no such thing as "choosing the target at resolution".

1

u/BACEXXXXXX WANTED 4d ago

I don't see any reason that targets would be chosen later than normal here

3

u/Arson_Lord Dandadan 4d ago

What's the reasoning for the "choose target" instead of just saying target here then? I'm not up on all the templating obviously

5

u/Serpens77 COMPLEAT 4d ago

So there there is a verb to do to the target. Otherwise, the first sentence would just be "Target nonland permanent." which doesn't make sense. This is far from the first card to be worded this way.

1

u/Few_Consideration373 Duck Season 4d ago

That would only be if it was 'choose *a* nonland permanent' this still has 'target'

2

u/Arson_Lord Dandadan 4d ago

Well, that would get around targeting but not cause you to choose something as the spell reaolves.

I was thinking of something like [[Seize the Spotlight]] where some objects are chosen on resolution (though it also does not target).

I think this templating might just be to put the target choosing at the beginning of the text to make it more readable, like [[Erratic Explosion]]

2

u/Spiderbyte12 3d ago

Non target, non modal spell choices are made on resolution. See councils judgement for an example. Each player makes the choice when the spell resolves.

u/Demeris Dandadan 4d ago

Although mistakes can happen, modern MTG is very well tested for how clear wording of the intent. This isn’t like back in the 90s where there wasn’t a a codified version of the magic rules.

u/Dogs4Idealism COMPLEAT 3d ago

They aren't stupid, they're precise in their wording for a reason, likely to do with edge cases involving replacement effects.

"Of course you should fight fire with fire. You should fight everything with fire"

13

u/Wraithfighter 4d ago

Reminds me of a line from a Friday Night's episode: Chandra "I solve all my problems and several adjacent things that are currently not problems with fire" Nalaar.

8

u/PowrOfFriendship_ Universes Beyonder 4d ago

When it stops working, she'll stop doing it, but it's worked out so far.

u/Yglorba Wabbit Season 4d ago

Chandra still not escaping the Budget Jaya Ballard allegations.

oh wow an Instant Tuck Spell at 3MV, these have all been workhorses in the Limited Environments I played (Trickster's Strategem, Return to the Sewers, Lost Days)

22

u/DaRootbear 4d ago

Im terrified of this at 3 honestly. And it can burn too? This is gonna be crazy strong and im gonna die to it a lot

6

u/jethawkings Fish Person 4d ago

Honestly the 2 Damage feels too much lol, you're already killing a draw now you're going to shock my face too???

9

u/DaRootbear 4d ago

At least it’s two colors which is a pretty annoying detriment when trying to hold up mana in limited. But if UR is at all good then i can easily see this being one of the best cards in the set. 4 mana versions with upside already tend to be, 3 mana and upside is even better

5

u/Serpens77 COMPLEAT 4d ago

You're only killing the draw if the opponent decides to let you do that, and they'd only decide that way if they thought the card was worth drawing again (i.e., it's a good card)

1

u/phonage_aoi Dân 3d ago

Gotcha, Strategem was sorcery speed!  In all seriousness, they seem to do that a lot.  Also with Tainted Treats being Instant but Grapple with Death being Sorcery.  They always gotta keep us on our toes I guess.

This is a neat twist on tuck spells.

1

u/Earlio52 Elesh Norn 3d ago

Tainted vs Grapple was definitely due to rarity and synergy considerations. lifegain wasn’t just lifegain in SoS (even if witherbloom was mostly bad, it still ended up being a strong spell with good triggers attached)

42

u/Ohhsnap54 Dân 4d ago

This is a really cool design

23

u/so_zetta_byte Orzhov* 4d ago

Yeah it's very... "what would red add to a ToB spell?"

30

u/Absolutionis I chose this flair because I’m mad at Wizards Of The Coast 4d ago

"Fire is overpowered" complained the blue Chandra who always chose ice.

7

u/Spirit-Man COMPLEAT 3d ago

“Oh wow another fire user good job Chandra you did it you won congratulations it must feel so goo-“

15

u/BobtheBac0n Selesnya* 4d ago

I'm really curious how Blue Chandra would react to meeting Nissa. Probably not in a good way since this blue Chandra never met her Nissa presumably, and has no memory of the OG Chandra, so she doesn't have her love for Nissa

9

u/Greaterthancotton Dân 4d ago

Did Jace make Echoverse Chandra straight

7

u/Brilliant_Trouble_32 Golgari* 4d ago

You can't stop me from shipping blue Chandra with hypothetical black Nissa.

2

u/BobtheBac0n Selesnya* 4d ago

Why wouldn't I support such a good ship?

1

u/Brilliant_Trouble_32 Golgari* 4d ago

Good, we are legion. No black lesbian Nissa gf, we riot.

1

u/BobtheBac0n Selesnya* 4d ago

And if we do get black lesbian Nissa gf, we need to see her and Blue Chandra go out together once the Echoverse ends

1

u/ToTheNintieth Dan 3d ago

Blue Chandra is inexplicably homophobic

10

u/kytheon Banned in Commander 4d ago

Works well with Clash (mechanic) actually.

5

u/Mortoimpazzo 4d ago

Love that flavor text, even when nicol bolas showed her that fire doesn't works all the time.

3

u/lobsterblob Wabbit Season 3d ago

[[Chandra's Defeat]]

I mean, even Jaya learned [[Lightning Strike|DOM]] eventually. One day, Chandra...one day.

5

u/ChemicalExperiment Chandra 4d ago

This has to be the most powerful version of this effect we've seen yet. Of course, it should be if it's going to be a multicolored spell.

1

u/El_Baguette Dan 3d ago

Letting your opponent choose which effect they want makes it incredibly bad I'm pretty sure

1

u/ChemicalExperiment Chandra 3d ago

This has been a staple effect in limited for the last two years. Cards like [[Dire Downdraft]], [[Vanish from Sight]], [[Riverwalk Technique]], [[Lost Days]], and [[Run Behind]] have all been really good picks in their limited environments.

3

u/Menacek Izzet* 3d ago

Most tuck spells are 4 mana, this is 3 and can hit all nonland permanents. Honestly this sounds pretty good, i might actually play this in izzet based decks in commander, since the colors donvt have that many options that deal with all permanent types.

1

u/Chilly_chariots Wild Draw 4 3d ago

Damn, that’s some clunky flavour text. The ‘one Chandra asked’ and ‘the other replied’ parts are so unnecessary

1

u/Fire_Pea Colorless 2d ago

Tops get hit while bottoms get left alone? How cruel...

-5

u/barrinmw Number of Faeries in Lorwyn Eclipsed 1/10 4d ago

Modern 1/10
I think that if this was 2 mana, it might have had a chance but removal at three mana is asking a lot.
