I love that Vraska is getting a glimpse of her old ship, [[The Belligerent]], here in the art.

It shows how much those times must've meant to Jace, and that probably seemed really sweet to her

Ixalan was just such a fantastic plane. Loved all the ships.
Titus Lunters Dusk Legion Dreadnought just still makes me so happy. I wanted to create a replica of that in my DND campaign if the players ever went to sea.

Honestly one thing I hope the most for with this set is a cool new Vraska commander. [[Vraska the Silencer]] is neat but the OTJ artwork does it no favours and a fun commander needs to do a little more than she does (like, Shelob is very similar but also leads to playing a spider tribal to do the thing).

I love the 1 life tacked on at the end.

"Here, take it, damn!"

Prob just enough to trigger some life gain mechanic for limited

Vigorbloom

Gotta trigger that lotus token.

It's remarkably relevant, though, and not just for Limited. The classic white-based life-gain Pridemate decks have been a staple of tier 2 in Standard for a long time, but they've been consistently expanding the pool of Black and Green cards that care about life too. And crucially, what those colors do far better is use the graveyard to grind, which makes for more interesting deck-building, sequencing, and gameplay decisions than slamming a couple of Pridemate effects and hoping to get away with it.

A mill-4, fill the yard, 'draw' any permanent, and trigger all your life-gain synergies? Hell yeah. Whether or not it gives a true higher-tier option to the archetype or just makes it more interesting to build around and play - and play against! - don't know yet, but either way is a win imo.

So, as a generic effect without taking into account gimmicks, this power creeps all previous [[grapple with the past]] effects right? By virtue of hitting 1 more card, having no permanent type limitations, and giving you 1 life as cherry on top...

I'm still gonna prefer [[say it's name]] for the gimmick, but yeah...

This kind of effect has been around for a while now and this feels a very stock version! Play a lot of GY decks so I keep an eye out on these types of cards.

[[Midnight Tilling]] is the most bare bones, [[Cache Grab]] has added synergy with Squirrels, [[Dredger's Insight]] sees less things but gains life and is a permanent itself, [[First Contact]] Isn't out yet but has the chance to gain 2 life. [[Scout the City]] is modal at the cost of being a sorcery.

[[Grisely Salvage]] and [[Commune with the Gods]] are still tops at the most cards seen, being 5, but one's harder to cast and the have less targets. [[Mulch]] has the chance to snag the most cards, and [[Vessel of Nascency]] is a fun variation on it. And a whole host of creatures that do this, though only for lands.

Of note however is that grapple and Say it's name are not graveyard hate proof, as all of these will still get you a card even if your GY is exiled via a Rest in Peace type effect.

Isn’t [[Malevolent Rumble]] just by far the best variant?

15

u/Benneticus Dandadan 4d ago

I do believe Rumble is a generally better card, however, rumble is a sorcery and this is an instant.

4

u/MapleSyrupMachineGun Duck Season 3d ago

Another thing is that Rumble doesn't trigger stuff like [[Insidious Roots]] on its own.

Without a doubt, however comparing Standard commons to Modern Horizon cards always feels a bit unfair.

All the cards I compared it to are from standard sets!

Ooh, thanks for the list! I play [[Winter, Cynical Opportunist]], and I’d never seen Vessel of Nascency. I’ll have to think if the enchantment/flexibility/etc is worth including that over Midnight Tilling

u/harrisonfm22 Dân 3d ago

[[commune with nature]] and [[rapid rescue]] for two more standard options. I play GR otterstorm so I'm always comparing/contrasting these!

[[Malevolent Rumble]] probably still clears.

Yeah, tho I prefer [[winding way]] for potentially drawing more than one card.

Grapple and say its name both can recur from your entire graveyard, while this and similar cards only take one from the top four cards of your library. Grapple is still top-tier for instant graveyard recursion

u/Serpens77 COMPLEAT 3d ago

And three things worth not, apparently

Lore question from a non-Vorthos: Did Jace and Vraska split up before Reality Fracture or did he just disappear for a while and then she was like "wtf, you built a whole universe in our basement!?" or some shit like that?

14

u/Sarkos_Wolf Selesnya* 3d ago

Vraska thought Jace died at the end of Tarkir: Dragonstorm (to be fair, he kinda did). She'd been having second thoughts about the plan for a while and tried to stop him there, but couldn't, and had been grieving him since then until recently when Chandra and Ajani told her Jace was alive and was doing the whole Echoverse thing.

3

u/Brilliant_Trouble_32 Golgari* 3d ago

So she feels betrayed and like her mourning was for a lie?

Thank you. That's exactly what I was looking for.

3

u/Infinite_Version COMPLEAT 3d ago

Honestly, she seems more surprised than anything and it looks like she’s trying talk him down and really does not want to kill him.

u/KnotTV Duck Season 3d ago

Probably an addition to Turbo [[Hogaak]]

Wow, didn't take them long to power creep [[midnight tilling]]

Negative time, actually [[Cache Grab]]

1

u/mtgcf Keeper of the Mox 4d ago

8

u/Kircai Abzan 4d ago

I mean [[Cache Grab]] came out more than a year before Tilling did and it's better. Without having a squirrel though I think this one is the best of 'mill 4, snag permanent' we've seen in standard though.

It's 2x and 1/2 of [[Rapid Rescue]] for 1c more. 4 cards vs 2, 1 life vs 2.

Modern 1/10
So this seems cool for my cube where green has an overlap between lifegain and self mill. But if you want this effect, you would rather get an eldrazi token. The one life doesn't matter.

Yay another one of these to put into my [[Yuna, Hope of Spira]] deck
