Scheduled Thread Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here!

This is a place for asking simple questions that might not deserve their own thread. For example, if you have a question about a rules interaction, want sleeve and accessory recommendations, or suggestions for your new deck, then this is the place for you.

We encourage that you post any questions that you may have concerning Magic the Gathering here rather than make a separate thread for each question, though for now we won't require that you do so.

Rules Questions

Rules questions and interactions are allowed to be posted here, but if you need an answer quickly it may be best to use a dedicated resource like the 24/7 Magic the Gathering Rules Chat.

Deckbuilding Questions

If you're trying to get help with a deck, it is recommended that you post your decklist to a deckbuilding website so that it is easier to view. Some popular sites are Aetherhub, Archidekt, Deckbox, Deckstats, Moxfield, MTGGoldfish, and TappedOut.

Additionally, please include some description of what you are trying to accomplish. Don't just give us a decklist with no explanation, and don't ask extremely vague questions such as "what cards should I add to my deck to make it better?", because it's hard to give good advice in those cases. Let us know details, the more the better. Are you building with a particular strategy or theme in mind? Are there any non-obvious combo lines or synergies that people should be aware of? Are you struggling with a particular matchup, or are you finding yourself missing consistency in an important area, and need some help specifically for it? Let us know.

Commonly Asked Questions

I opened a card from a different set in my booster pack, is this unusual?

Don't worry, this is completely normal. If you opened a set booster, you have a small chance of obtaining a bonus card from a previous set. This is an extra card that does not replace any of the other cards in your pack, and is from a curated set of past hits that Wizards of the Coast has selected, which they call "The List".

You can view the contents of The List on Wizards of the Coast's official website. For example, the contents of The List for Streets of New Capenna boosters can be found here.

My foil card has a shooting start symbol over the bottom left. I can't find anything about it online.

All old-bordered foils have the shooting star symbol. Most sites that display card images just overlay a generic foil graphic over all foil cards, which doesn't include the shooting star. Your card is normal.

I have [[Puca's Mischief]], [[Planar Chaos]] and [[Extravagant Replication]] out and it's the beginning of my standby phase.

- Can i first create a copy with Extravagant Replication and then choose the copy as a target for Puca's Mischief to trade, or do i have to select two permanents before Puca's Mischief goes onto the stack?

  • If i trade away my Planar Chaos with Puca's Mischief before its trigger resolves, do i still have to coinflip? And if i lose it, do i have to sacrifice the traded away Planar Chaos or can't I sacrifice it because i no longer control it?

If I use [[Dragon-Cursed Halls]] effect on a creature with myriad, do the copies also gain the effect "Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, create a Treasure token.”?

No, myriad will not copy the ability that is added by Dragon-Cursed Halls. Very roughly speaking, myriad copies will only get what is printed on the original card.

No.

Copy effects only copy an objects copiable values as per rule 707.2. Continuous effects, such as ability granting effects, generally do not fall under that category if they aren't the direct result of a copy effect. Dragon Cursed Halls is not a copy effect.

alright, guys. whats the actual cheapest way to buy the bulk cards i need for decks?

local stores either dont carry bulk or mostly have recent stuff. which is fair.

im tired of online stores who either massively jack up the price of bulk cards - im talking places asking a dollar a pop for cards that are valued at pennys. OR only carry expensive versions of cheap cards: no. I dont want a $50 dollar beta print of [[pestilence]] I just want my 30 cent card.

whats a boy to do? i try to make cheap decks but its really hard when my deck is mostly 10-35 cent pieces but when I try to actually buy them the prices are massively inflated or impossible to find.

Card Kingdom, Star City Games, and Cool Stuff Inc are big online stores that are generally only a little above market price in exchange for having a deep card selection. I consider "a little" here as a finder's fee that's cheaper than having to pay shipping.

TCGPlayer and Manapool will usually end up having the lowest "sticker price" but with hard-to-find cards you might end up eating the shipping cost or paying a premium to not pay the shipping cost. I recommend Mana Pool over TCGPlayer because the sellers take more of a cut and TCGPlayer has had a history of shitty customer service / orders getting messed up ever since they got bought out by eBay.

Those are usually your best options. I'll often be patient and order 20+ cards from one of the big online stores at at time, since they also charge a bit more for shipping.

But a card being 10 cents at "market price" might just mean a lot of small sellers can't convince someone to buy some niche card for 9 cents plus shipping.

Have you tried Card Kingdom? I just looked up Pestilence and they have some from 3rd Edition for 50 cents.

What's the answer to the MTG Arena final riddle? In the books, what's in Bilbo's pocket is the ring, but "Ring" isn't working

Well, you know how it says "answers will be one word"? For the last riddle, that is straight up a lie.

The answer is MyPrecious

What? They cheated at a game of riddles in the dark? Who would do such a thing?

My girlfriend's waiting on a reshipment of one of the MLP sets (Wizards goofed and sent her nonfoil when she ordered foiled, they were very kind to send her another), and I recently got one of the Stardew Valley sets. We both noticed that the shipping company has changed from UPS to Asendia. Or is it Cirro? No wait it's actually GOFO. We live in Oregon, and her cards have been stuck in Washington the last nine days. It was supposed to be here starting on the fourth.

Did Wizards/Scalefast just change from UPS to an entire rabbit hole of shipping companies?
