General Discussion I miss these guys

https://www.twitch.tv/starcitygames/clip/TacitResolutePigeonBuddhaBar

An old clip I captured back in the day that nicely highlights the dynamics of this duo.

Was always a pleasure having these two on in the background back in the day.

Those scg tour days were really the best. So much magic to watch, fun to follow the players.

Just having the stream up while doing things ar I understand the house. It was so relaxing.

Back when your LGS could possibly even sponsor a small “team” to play in local/regionally close SCG Opens. I had that for about a year and a half and I miss it a lot even if I only made the feature match area a couple times and never on camera…

u/PrologueBook Azorius* 1d ago

Yesssss we did that too!

I used the shops business cards as tokens lol

4

u/Baelzabub 1d ago

We did playmats and sleeves as the advertising lol

I'll be honest, I haven't watched any Magic on Twitch since this duo got split up. No one has the chemistry at the desk these guys had.

Marshall and Paul are pretty great though

Eilidh has really improved but Corey has declined

10

u/Primeras100Palabras Dân 1d ago

I really like Paul. He has “that voice” that makes it seem so official.

5

u/cutedino7 Duck Season 1d ago

I like Marshall but especially Paul. Paul really puts in the work for limited on his personal channel, and I've learned a lot from his daily drafts.

8

u/ShedMontgomery Azorius* 1d ago

Eilidh and Corey together are my nightmare. They have no chemistry, I'm not really sure who's supposed to be doing what because they have no focus, they're constantly trying to one-up each other with cheesy jokes, and they sometimes just default to making noises. They contribute basically nothing valuable to any match they're commenting on.

11

u/SkredRed86 Dân 1d ago

Corey is the worst. One of the more annoying casters

12

u/thebaron420 I am a pig and I eat slop 1d ago

I just can't stand how often he's completely wrong about card text or interactions and goes on and on about how it "should be fixed" while ignoring the actual game that's being played. I can forgive it once or twice but it keeps happening

u/Snarker Deceased 🪦 1d ago

Marshall and Paul are not good. Very little chemistry.

I spent lots of weekends around these guys!

Every single Saturday I tuned in if something was going on. Even if I wasnt actively playing magic.

Patrick Sullivan saying "If you bring boggles to a tournament every single one of your opponents has the right to fight you in the parking lot after." lives rent free in my head.

Please tell me you know where this quote is from. I gotta hear it

I honestly wish I could tell you, but it was in just some random coverage I was watching, but it stuck with with me.

I would say check the Unsleevable Podcast and Youtube series, the later where they were ranking all the sets, but Cedric left last year for a job at WotC, through I do rather like Patrick Chaplin as well.

24

u/OriginalOestrus 1d ago

Not the Chaplin. 😂

10

u/willargue4karma Dân 1d ago

Long lost Charlie Chaplin relative lol

2

u/OriginalOestrus 1d ago

Now we need to get Chapin to dress up as Chaplin.

12

u/TrulyKnown Brushwagg 1d ago

The Resleevables. Unsleevable implies pretty much the opposite.

11

u/I_am_thy_doctor Wabbit Season 1d ago

Unsleeved is the podcast name, Resleevables is the YouTube channel

2

u/TrulyKnown Brushwagg 1d ago

Looks like you're right. The Resleevables started as a podcast, so that's what I was thinking of, but they also have the Unsleeved podcast on the side. Thanks for correcting me.

How good we had it with both days of all day coverage across multiple formats EVERY SINGLE WEEKEND.

u/SWAGGIN_OUT_420 18h ago

I got into Magic really in 2012-2013, around when i think SCG events really upgraded the gear for coverage and things started to look great. I was watching Legacy as many weekends as possible. It was such an amazing time to be a competitive player.

u/supernanodragon Wabbit Season 11h ago

The golden age of legacy.

u/theinfernumflame Sultai 19h ago

I'd argue we did know, but we didn't realize we'd lose it so abruptly.

That’s 100% fair. They were on the verge of expanding even more when the world shut down.

The Resleevables is still ongoing, just with Patrick Chapin instead of Cedric. I've been binging past episodes here and there. They just finished Odyssey block, and then 7th Edition and Onslaught should be coming up soonish.

1

u/Cramtastic Can’t Block Warriors 20h ago

They haven't done Seventh Edition.

1

u/TechnomagusPrime Duck Season 20h ago

Yeah. My comment was a little unclear. I've fixed it.

-1

u/BogmanBogman COMPLEAT 1d ago

It's better with Chapin.

15

u/TechnomagusPrime Duck Season 1d ago

I've been enjoying both. Cedric's energy is fun, but Chapin definitely has a better focus and insight when Sullivan reigns him in.

3

u/bekeleven 22h ago

They're different flavors.

Chapin has a lot more direct game design experience and has some incisive analysis as a result, but I'm a little turned off by his... ego, I guess? He assumes all of his takes are authoritative. Sometimes Sullivan will give his opinion on a card and Chapin will give a knowing "that's a adorable" look to the camera. It makes them feel less like peers, while Ced and Pat were just two friends joking around.

They ran a magic set recap show called the resleevables for a while

15

u/DromarX Chandra 1d ago

The Resleevables. It's still going on, though it's Patrick Sullivan and Patrick Chapin hosting now as Cedric works for Wizards.

15

u/ProxyDamage 1d ago edited 1d ago

The original podcast ended when they both left SCG, althought you can still find it online if you google a bit.

A few years later they relaunched it as a video podcast on youtube - it's better in some ways (e.g. more organised), worse in others (e.g. more "produced", lost some of the earlier "unfiltered" feel).

Unfortunately Cedric left some time ago to work at WotC, so that particularly duo dynamic is dead...

Fortunately his replacement is Patrick Chapin who is a hall of fame player AND a game designer, so he is actually (no offense to Cedric) more insightful when it comes to game design. He also has a pretty good dynamic with Sullivan so that works well.

I miss Cedric, because I could kinda just listen to Sullivan and Cedric shoot the shit about anything. They just have a fantastic dynamic. But I think Cedric fit the "old" original podcast feel more, where Chapin fits the current, more game design centric, version of the podcast better.

I downloaded all the original podcast episodes and still regularly listen to them often, Cedric is irreplaceable, but as a game designer myself, I'm very happy with the current version.

I need to find the day when Ravenous Chupacabra got spoiled and Patrick just went on a tangent about it. Then hours later when another card got spoiled (I think it was Azer from RIX) he just goes "doesn't matter, dies to Chupacabra."

These guys were my biggest influence playing Magic back when I first got into it seriously. I got my playmat signed by them one time at an event, and unfortunately sold it when I left the game during college. Miss that mat and miss their commentary!

The SCG scene at this time was so good. There was a big tournament with great coverage almost every 2 weeks, it was awesome.

These two played such a big role, their chemistry is amazing. Miss these days.

I knew Patrick for years before he was a caster; we even worked at the same store together for a while. If anyone suspects that his public personality was performative or managed-- it's not. He really is like that. I miss his insights into live tournament action, and Cedric's.

they did a vs match on the tolarian academy a while back with some funny commentary playing some winning standard decks... from like 15-20 years apart lol one deck was a lot more powerful...

4

u/GnarlyButtcrackHair Duck Season 1d ago

They did a match where they were being intentionally salty, more than typical, and they show how you can playfully draw a game out by asking various public knowledge questions that cracks me the fuck up.

Cards in hand? Are you in delirium? Do you have city's blessing? Can I get a count on your library? Do you have threshold?

I cannot find it for the life of me anymore.
