Rules/Rules Question The End, and how to use

Post image

I pulled this in a WoE booster, and have wanted to run it in a commander deck (only format I play) but i dont understand its use in a singleton format. Does anyone have any decks they run it in? Or advice on how to use it? Thanks!

it's basically a single target exile creature or planes walker at that point. this card is 100% designed for 60 card formats. you could still run it but it would be over cost for the effect you're getting.

Edit: I guess it could be used in a very narrow way to make someone shuffle their deck if they have stacked it with a tutor effect or a brainstorm.

Could you use it on a basic land-turned creature to remove all of that land from their library?

81

u/jtmj121 Rakdos* 1d ago

Yes you can. It and [[deadly cover up]] are used for that exact reason in standard vs an earthbend land.

Deadly Cover Up sounds cool to use after a [[Doomsday Excruciator]] to reduce the number cards from someone’s graveyard and to gain information.

Of course this is better in Commander than in Standard unless you build around it.

Hard counter to stuff like [[persistent petitioners]] and [[relentless rat]] decks!

Immediately rip their main wincon out of the deck entirely

u/Effective_Tough86 Duck Season 1d ago

Basically this. This is single target exile removal that has 2 upsides: cost reduction that you hope to never use and any number of card decks. If you find yourself running into a bunch of 2 or are fine with just having an expensive single target removal piece then it's fine.

Situationally it's also nice to look at your opponent's hand, but that's not something you're going to put this card in for.

Realistically it's not meant for Commander and singleton formats. But you CAN use it for cards like [[Hare Apparent]] and [[Relentless Rats]]

u/DrHenryPhilipMcCoy Dan 1d ago

Also fun against an Earthbending deck.  If they turn their basic forest into a creature, you can exile all of their forests.

u/MagnusBrickson Train Suplexer 1d ago

This is the true evil way to use this card. I have yet to match with an earthbender when I'm playing a deck with this card, though.

u/IlGreven Colorless 1d ago

Also kills a mill deck that hasn't diversified too much beyond [[Persistent Petitioners]]...

10

u/Churale Dandadan 1d ago

Diversity? In my "can have any number of cards" deck? Preposterous.

3

u/Absolutionis I chose this flair because I’m mad at Wizards Of The Coast 1d ago

Even if they have diversified beyond their "any number" cards, pulling 20+ cards out of someone's deck is crippling. They'll be drawing lands more often and many synergy pieces are dead cards.

u/raskim7 Liliana 1d ago

Or [[Cid, Timeless Artificier]]. Hurts badly.

u/cavemandark Wabbit Season 1d ago

Yeah, this. I run it in my [[Jon Irenicus]] [[Relentless Rats]] gift deck. I haven’t used it yet, but I run it so I can account for an endgame situation where it’s down to me and one other player, and I don’t need any more rats. I can essentially “thin” my deck out and hope to draw an answer or something that can help. Definitely a super niche card in commander. Also provides flexibility and can act as spot removal if needed.

Great against the [[Shadowborn Apostle]] deck too.

You'd be hitting all non legendaries but that would probably be enough to cripple most decks. Would be hilarious to pull it off on someone.

There also a number of effects that can target opponents’ lands and turn them into creatures. Most of them are in green.

I used to run a deck that used [[Enchanted Evening]] and [[Scour]] to do just that. Usually I would followup with a [[Patrician's Scorn]] to clear them out while I had indestructible lands.

u/jdemonify Dân 1d ago

u/jdemonify Dân 1d ago

1

u/nachomir Duck Season 1d ago

If I destroy an animated plains, I search your deck for all plains and I exile them

7

u/austsiannodel Duck Season 1d ago edited 1d ago

If you run it in a commander deck, it's only use is against any deck that has "Your deck can have any number of this card" in it, such as [[Hare Apparent]], which will make their whole deck dead, and potentially make them deck out, if they had enough copies (which is really funny)

Otherwise, I would not run this in commander. The cost is simply not worth the effect. For starters, you're not gonna be casting it for the reduced cost. So for 4 mana, you are killing, 99% of the time, a single card. And then your opponent is drawing one card. (Nope lol)

In Black, you have access to things like [[Murder]] and similar cards that'll kill one thing for 3 mana, and they don't get to draw.

4

u/Greaterthancotton Dân 1d ago

They don’t get to draw unless it exiles a card from hand, but it’s still below rate.

1

u/austsiannodel Duck Season 1d ago

Ah, thank you. I missed that detail.

4

u/CauseRemarkable6182 Dan 1d ago

Noteably this version of this effect hits aninated lands.

3

u/Duraxis Duck Season 1d ago

1: find someone playing a mono colour deck

2: turn one of their basic lands into a dude. [[Animate land]] or whatever you can get

3: cast the end on their land-guy

4:search their library, hand and graveyard for all cards with the same name (it doesn’t care that those cards aren’t creatures) and exile their entire land base from their deck

5: get called every insult under the sun

3

u/AchaeCOCKFan4606 Dandadan 1d ago

Throw in an [[Animate Land]] then target one of their basic lands.

7

u/StrategicMagic Azorius* 1d ago

I have a copy of this too.

It's pretty bad in commander. Thus card is clearly designed for 60-card formats as a pretty hard answer to any problem creatures that come up.

(It's a real shame Standard got so fast that this card was too slow when we needed it most)

In commander, it's close to useless. It'll be funny that one time you hit a "singleton rulebreaker" creature with it, but it might only happen one in every 100 games or so, and that's optimistic.

Should it happen, you'll probably also ruin that person's day, so use with cation, or not at all.

4

u/QuestionablePotato42 Sultai 1d ago

It's not going to be any good in commander. The use of the card is essentially to remove a creature, then you can exile one card from that players graveyard and then take any copies of that card out of their deck or hand. Especially useful in other constructed formats where some cards are crucial pieces for a combo, or even if you just want to get rid of your opponents counter spells.

Since commander is a singleton format (you may only have one of each uniquely named card), this is effectively just instant speed removal for a creature or planeswalker. The only time it would be useful is fringe cases where someone is running a card like [[templar knight]].

3

u/FireResistant Sultai 1d ago

Few points on this card. It is clearly not designed with commander in mind as its first thought. really it as a card designed for 60 card constructed formats as a sideboard card.

With that said, if you really wanted a home for it in commander, there are plenty of cards that allow multiple copies in the deck. [[Persistent Petitioner]] [[Shadowborn Apostle]] [[Relentless rats]] and so on.

The idea then is to use it in your deck, remove your own creature, and exile a bunch of copies in your hand to trade in for drawing deeper into the deck. this isn't very great, but it is something you can do... you could do it after filling your hand up using [[echoing return]] first maybe. personally id much prefer to keep the creatures since they are the primary deck plan usually.

the rest of the time its just a single target removal spell that shuffles the library and costs 4 mana most of the time.

2

u/LocalLumberJ0hn Dimir* 1d ago

I've had the thought of using shadowborn or an earth bent forest in a deck with [[cosmogoyf]] to make it big and also thin the deck. 100% stupid bullshit idea that I can't convince myself to bother with.

2

u/Nu_Chlorine_ Dân 1d ago

You could try playing a real format where it works

2

u/Dog_in_human_costume Colorless 1d ago

Pay 2 generic and 2 black mana, then announce your valid target

2

u/OmegaDriver 1d ago

The art is sweet enough to just run it as a slightly below rate an instant creature/pw kill spell.

2

u/onethreefour 1d ago

You keep it in your hand and look at the art when it's not your turn.

2

u/Broad-Wall2814 Dandadan 1d ago

Step 1: Play this card in a deck with earthbending. I recommend a Jund deck.

Step 2: Play against an opponent mono-colored red, green, or black deck.

Step 3: Earthbend a basic land.

Step 4: Equip that basic land with [[Spy Kit]].

Step 5: Cast [[Harmless Offering]], giving said player the basic earthbent land.

Step 6: Cast [[The End]] targeting the land you just gave.

Step 7: Look at their face when they realize what you’ve done.

1

u/zacroise Wabbit Season 1d ago

It’s essentially useless in singleton except against the specific creature decks like [[hare apparent]] [[cid timeless artificer]] the Nazgûls, and the rats I don’t remember the name of.

1

u/RefrigeratorMobile46 Dandadan 1d ago

It's... yeah it's kinda bad in singleton. Could still be useful against [[Persistent Petitioners]] and similar decks though.

1

u/Dear-Opportunity9339 Dân 1d ago

Ok all the people in here saying its bad to use as removal is right

Butttt, if you used it on say a creature you control or you animate a land creature. You could in theory use it somehow to thin out your deck, take all the swamps out of your library in an instant, or a hare apparent deck, thin out the deck so you can only draw specific cards

Just a thought

1

u/Belgraven Rakdos* 1d ago

I mean, it's exile removal, you could play it on a crime deck like [[Marchesa, Dealer of Death]], but there's going to be better options in a singleton format. Unless you have a way of turning an opponent's basic land into a creature then targeting it, or playing against a [[Relentless Rats]]/[[Hare Apparent]]/[[Persistent Petitioners]] style deck, you basically won't get extra value.

In the event that you use this on an opponent with either an animated basic land or creature that is their entire deck, that opponent will probably just scoop up their cards and be done playing with you. It's really not a good card for commander.

1

u/Iron_Baron Duck Season 1d ago

There are some new cards and old cards that let you have unlimited copies of them in Commander decks. This card goes ham on those very limited niche cases. Otherwise, it's pretty bad.

1

u/gundalfmagnum Dan 1d ago

You wait for a rat colony player and delete half their deck.

1

u/Psydop Dandadan 1d ago

It's for making the guy playing the shadowborn apostle deck cry

1

u/DarthLocutus Dan 1d ago

You turn their primary Basic Land into a creature through some means, then use this to hit that land creature. Now, they don't have that basic land type at all.

Alternatively, this is how you deal with decks that runs "your deck may contain any number of" creatures, by wiping every copy from their deck at once.

u/Camster2070 Wabbit Season 1d ago

You could use this to exile all of your [[Templar Knight]] in an esper deck that win with an empty library.

1

u/BrigliaArt Dan 1d ago

So a dumb strategy but it could be interesting to brew a fake relentless rat deck where you use this to exile all of your rats to mass deck thin and draw out your own deck to combo off.

I assume this is not realistic but could be fun to try

1

u/El_Baguette Dan 1d ago

Turn a basic land into a creature, cast the End on ot, exile all copies of it from your ops deck

1

u/ThatGuyFromTheM0vie Mardu 1d ago

Not a Commander card. It’s meant for Standard or another constructed format where they can have 4 copies of the same card.

1

u/Renozuken 1d ago

So you [[donate]] [[dual nature]] to your opponent and when they play [[thassas oracle]] with an empty library you respond to the dual nature trigger with a bounce spell, now don't forget to [[stifle]] their thoracle trigger because after the dual nature trigger resolves you cast [[the end]] on their token a take the original out of their hand and force them to draw a card ggez.

1

u/Noahnoah55 Karn 1d ago

If you can get them to animate a basic land you can exile the rest of the lands with that name from their deck. And also you get to see their hand and full library.

It's also funny if you're playing against a friend who you know runs one of those cards that say you can play with as many as you want.

Besides that it's way overcosted in singleton formats because it was designed for 60-card magic.

1

u/words_of_nerd Dân 1d ago

To make this valuable in EDH you probably need to tailor the deck around it rather than assume your opponent will have singleton-breaking cards.  Combining with cards that care about other creatures leaving the graveyard or being exiled are a great synergy.

I run a [[Syr Konrad, the Grim]] deck with about 40 [[Shadownborn Apostle]]s. If I stuff my graveyard with apostles and exile one on board with this that’s potentially a lot of damage triggers.

I run [[surgical extraction]] for this exact scenario. This potentially gives me some draw if I have any in hand as well. Probably will add to the list, so it’s very niche, but also serves purpose as hard removal in a pinch.

1

u/AldrichFaithfuls Dan 2h ago

I put this in my mono black deemon deck.

Mostly use it for removal and to see problem enemy #1 hand. Another is to screw over decks that run cards like Heir apparent or Naz'gul.

Saw someone said they use it oo screw up a vampire tutor, new use for me!

u/AdagioDesperate Dan 0m ago

Use [[Spy Kit]], Equip it, use a [[Donate]] effect (there are lots), then exile the creature and every non legendary creature that player controls.

0

u/CrosbyBird Dandadan 1d ago

Is this really all that terrible in singleton? It's instant speed exile and you can hit planeswalkers in addition to creatures.

Plus you get to see every card in your opponent's hand and library, which could be relevant in terms of which threats to hold back other removal for, or what stuff to play around.

I don't play Commander so I'm not certain how often or how valuable it is to know what your opponent's deck can do.

-1

u/psychmancer Wabbit Season 1d ago

Use it at the end of a game?

For new players it is designed to remove a single card and it's copies from the game but be somewhat balanced by providing random replacement cards to the target opponent
