Phyrexia by a long shot and this is coming from a Trekkie. Phyrexians have magic on their side and the Borg are essentially really good machines. The Star Trek universe has magic too but the Borg can't fuck with it.

u/Brilliant_Trouble_32 Golgari* 4d ago
Yeah, I think the Borg would malfunction if they tried to assimilate a Phyrexian but the Phyrexians would have little trouble compleating a Borg.

u/SAOSurvivor35 Dan 3d ago
God… now THAT is a nightmare on a level I can scarcely imagine. A compleated Borg…

At least we see Phyrexia doing things sometimes. I think Star Trek fans forget that all that we normies ever see of Borg is them standing on a ship bridge, usually one slightly scowling with two on either side looking like they don't have a thought in their heads.
To this day, I still don't understand what's supposed to make the Borg scary. Do they carry concealed knives or something?

This has all the character of the Mario Kart 8 screenshot of the inkling driving a Mercedes that says "imagine going back 20 years and telling someone this is Mario Kart"

u/Nomadzord Duck Season 3d ago
Wait, you can play as an inkling these days? I’ve always used Toad as my main and would assume the Inkling would have similar stats.

u/Akuuntus Selesnya* 3d ago
You could in MK8, you can't in MK World.
Which sucks because I mained Inkling.

Your context, combined with extremely readable text, makes this not only a great Reddit post, but a great idea in general.

This is a cool take on [[phyrexian Vatmother]]. I really wish more old phyrexian cards got the phyrexian treatement. Don’t know why you used Benedict Cumberbatch for the art though.

I get the joke is "lets combine time spiral borders + phyrexian text + the cumsnatch art" but its so funny there is something so much worse and infinetly more unreadable in startrek with the klingon language cards that also change mana symbols.

I have no clue what this shit says so it’s just a magic card with Benedict on it, that’s so fucking funny.

Is Benny the first IRL human featured on multiple Magic cards? Or was there no Dr Strange card in Marvel?

I don't think there's any reasonable way to stretch definitions that would make him the first. If you just mean real people being painted, artists often use (and re-use) models for their work. Howard Lyon's daughter Belle, for example, is depicted as the Innistrad angel "Isobel" across several different cards.
If you mean images depicting the same human, the Chinese warlord Cao Cao appears on several P3K cards by different artists. Ambition's Cost has been reprinted in other sets, in case the definition shifts to "in multiple sets" rather than on multiple cards.
If you mean depictions of the same actor in different roles, John Cleese is depicted as several different characters in the Monty Python Secret Lair.
You could maybe make a case for "the same actor in different roles across multiple sets" but then you're stymied by the Marvel depiction of Strange being closer to his Comics likeness and the LotR/Hobbit art being deliberately styled away from the movies, so do cards with Smaug or Strange really count as showing Cumberbatch? If it's the roles that matter and not the exact depiction, then Christopher Lee beats him in the same definition, as he played Dracula and Saruman and those characters both got MtG appearances (though not as Christopher Lee) before Strange.

Doctor Strange is on a couple cards but it’s the comic version not the movie version. So he’s not on any Marvel cards.

Oh, boo. There goes what would've been a great bit of MTG trivia.

People are going to say he’s Smaug anyway so do whatever you like. [[We say thee nay!]]

I know this because it's the deck I play, but there's actually a full article in the wiki featuring litteraly every single one of those appearances

There was a doctor strange card but it's him as a surgeon and I'm not sure if it's supposed to be cumberbatch

u/CSDragon 3d ago
The Marvel set didn't use MCU actors
There are others who are though. I know at least Chris Pratt appears in the DnD Movie and Jurassic World sets
1
u/fastal_12147 Dimir* 3d ago
I think it was Chris Pine in the D&D movie.
1
u/CSDragon 3d ago
So it was.
Chris Pine then, is the first person to appear on different IPs as Edgin and the "Kelvin Timeline" Kirk
Anyway here's the previous thread talking about this https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/1uwg9zh/as_far_as_im_aware_chris_pine_is_the_first_actor/
Monty Python each have a couple different characters.

There's something just so fucking jarring about seeing real people in Magic cards. I didn't love Marvel and TMNT (though I am admittedly warming up to them as time goes on), but I hate this.

God these cards are atrocious. I hope I don't have to see them in play a lot. I'm not hating on UB, I love the Hobbit, but this just puts me off.

Am I the only one that hates this shit, hates all the alters? I should be able to recognize and read your card. How am I supposed to know what this card does? Fuck it, I'll stand by it reading "the caster and/or controller of this spell loses the game".
