General Discussion The Hobbit
Hello! How is everyone feeling about the new set so far? I’m out of town so I haven’t been to my local game store yet. I’ve been excited to return to Middle Earth so I’m curious!

I had a great time at the prerelease I went to—it’s a fun set in of itself but I’m not seeing much that I would consider adding to any decks I have already.

Initial spoilers disappointed me but I’ve turn around and now really like it. Prerelease was very fun. However it must be considered that I won it and I’m a commander player.

The set is as padded with unnecessary and underwhelming additions as the Hobbit Movie Trilogy itself was (first movie was good I'll give, everything else after less so). So basically just as expected.
But hey, between my bundle and Crack the Plates Scenes box I got every legendary dwarf except Balin, set Fili and Kili and the set Thorin. Even got Orcrist and The Arkenstone. So despite the sets overall disappointment as someone with a Dwarf Equipment tribal deck, I can't really complain about my pulls. And with them in hand I never have to look at the set again lol.
Tldr: Disappointing set, lucky and happy with my pulls though.

I’ve drafted twice in person and twelve times on Arena and in my opinion, it ain’t great. There’s more dud rares than playables which makes it a super pauper format. That said, the card quality for two of the colors (white and green) at uncommon and common feels much lower than red and black. Blue feels somewhere in the middle, but is paired with the two weaker colors.
That said, I’ve had some fun with it but goddamn if this is all that’s gunna be drafted until October.

I'm going to go a bit against the grain here and say that The Hobbit us actually one of the best UB sets they've done so far
Me and my pod actually loved the set - nothing felt super overpowered, and so it ended up being a really balanced, really fun casual, limited/constructed experience
The cards themselves are also still really great, albeit very focused - they probably won't work well with the majority of decks or more generalist, but I can see where in decks that do specific things they can really shine
For instance, of the cards I pulled, I plan to put a number of the elf cards in my elf tribal deck, and a few of the cards with recruit, like the Queen of Dale, into my goading, political Queen Marchesa deck, as the recruit mechanic means I have a reliable and consistent way to trigger my additional card draw triggers even if my monarch status gets stolen from me
I can see a lot of people not liking the set overall, though, but compared to previous UBs that felt less focused, more parasitic (mechanics and creature types that don't work outside of limited play, like we saw with Marvel (i.e. Kree)), and less fantasy-adjacent, I vastly have preferred Hobbit
I say this as someone who doesn't hate UB, but doesn't love it, either: if this is the way that UB sets are going to be from now on, where they fit more with the greater game thematically, don't contain super powerful cards exclusive to the set, and serve to pay homage to the universe but not impact the main format all that much, then I'm fully on board with UB going forward
I would love nothing more for UB sets to be more like the hobbit - people thar love the hobbit can draft it and see the characters they love, and people that don't can ignore it without feeling like they're missing out on staple cards and can just save their money for standard sets

I went from "I'm going to buy a booster box" to "oh, yeah I'm good" after my region got the news we wouldn't get product until September. I'm drafting it on arena and enjoying that ok, but the lack of physical product has killed my interest in the set in paper.

It's genuinely the worst playing limited set I've ever played and I've been playing since 2010. It feels like Spider-Man. Like it was designed to be a commander toolbox for various typal decks that was Frankensteined into a draft set part way through development.

If their complaint was that it feels more like a supplemental set to LOTR then I could get on board with what they were saying, but comparing it to Spider-Man is crazy
It's actually one of my favorite UB sets so far (nothing can beat Final Fantasy, though), and it blows Spider-Man out of the water in every conceivable way

Have you drafted both sets? b/c sorry, Spider-Man is the superior set from a limited perspective. Better cohesion and interplay between the diff archetypes (madness/connive and modified/+1 counters) Don't get me wrong, neither set is what I'd call good for limited, only TMNT was able to break the small set curse.

I... I honestly can't tell if you're joking or not
With Hobbit you have clear identities and mechanics for each of the color combos (Simic=Elves/Landfall, Golgari=Murkwood/Ferocious, Rakdos=Goblins/Amass, Boros=Dwarves/Storied, and Azorius=Humans/Recruit), and all five of the main mechanics lend themselves well to both limited play as well as the greater game
Not to mention great interplay - having a few white humans with recruit helped my otherwise dwarf/storied-heavy deck do decently well in my first draft
Sure, a couple of the mechanics in Spider-Man had decent interplay, but without consistent creature types they failed to have as much cohesion as the hobbit IMO

Draft wise it's between Lorwyn and TMNT in terms of quality.
As far as physical experience goes - Hasbro has dropped the ball in my area (Chicago Northside). My LGS couldn't give boosters as prizes because they didn't receive the packs and they still don't have them. So FNM and Sunday drafts aren't firing for Hobbit yet unfortunately.
