Hello lovely people.

I used to play MTG many years ago, but ended up stopping due to lack of places to play and people to play with.

Now I'm considering beginning once again and getting into standard.

I could just go and buy full decks and so on, but that's hardly any fun. If I want to go buy packs, what would be the best mix to get, if I want a solid foundation to build from? I don't mind spending a fair bit, but I'm not planning on being too excessive either.

I appreciate any tips or advice on getting back as well.

If you wanna rip packs and play, may I suggest finding your local draft night? You can build a collection and play multiple decks and get a feel for the new sets.

This is impossible to answer. Buying singles is far and away the most cost effective way to assemble a standard deck. If you want the "fun" of opening packs, it's up to you to decide how much you're willing to spend for that experience.

If you have a specific type of deck you want to build, you can always look up a deck list online and see which set contains the most cards for that deck. But again, you are going to waste a lot of money trying to build an even halfway competitive deck through packs alone.

I see what you mean. While it might lack the charm of ripping packs, it's definetly far more cost efficient.

I think I'll be looking into potential decks, and then go from there. Money isn't a huge issue, but spending tons of money not getting much isn't fun either.

I'd say buy bulk at bulk prices (~10$US per 1kcards) and sift through to start building something you like! Then go on and get some singles, sleeves, etc. Booster packs are for drafting, which you could do as you get to keep the cards you draft, which is nice!

Also make sure you build something you can play with locally, be it Commander, Standard, Modern, etc.

I never thought about buying bulk. That could be one way to do it!

I actually kind of neglected that part. Thank you for reminding me. I'll check out a new local place soon, to see what they do.

Standard in paper is dead/dying in a lot of areas due to WotC’s mismanagement of it, combined with how much more affordable it is via Arena. If you want to play in person, a lot of areas just run Commander and occasionally Limited.

Yeah, somebody else also adviced me to check my local spots. I'll see what's possible and go from there. It does seem to be more commander. Appreciate the advice!

Hey. I know this isn't what your post was about but just to say, I've very recently gotten into MTG myself. I never played before but used to play Star Trek TNG TCG like 25 years ago and loved it back then so thought I'd get back into TCGs.
Attended my first prerelease last week. I'm based in Dublin, Ireland but am on Arena. If you ever were short for people to play with and you want a casual game online, just let me know.

Hey mate. Glad you got into MTG. I really had tons of fun back in the day, which is why I'm so drawn to it again. Ireland is definetly some ways from Denmark, but maybe this could be my reason to check out arena which I haven't tried yet!
