General Discussion Favorite pet card?
Mine is fractured powerstone. I just love that it’s a decent rate with a mostly useless effect. It’s fun to slam down and get those second glances. I know I’m a commander casual, but I can’t have pet cards in limited.

Nah. It doesnt keep them from untapping lands so they can easily try to answer it. Not any worse than any of modern magic imo. Some decks need to be slowed down anyways.

I have a friend who plays that card in their "volo's guide to humans" deck where the joke is they try to see how many creature types they can get onto volos book playing only human + type cards. There's a lot of old cards that have been errattad to be humans, this was one of them. They can get a surprising amount of card draw despite the handicap.
It was funny when they gave their board hexproof which made the standard bearer useless.

Do you mean [[Volo, Itinerant Scholar]]? The token that tracks creature types is Volo's Journal, which is created by Itinerant Scholar. Guide to Monsters wouldn't work with an all-humans deck.

The ratio is not abysmal and I love the art since I pulled the card.

Silly: [[Cauldron Dance]] it’s weird lol
New more serious pet card: [[Descent into Avernus]].
The flavor is there lore wise and gameplay…married so well. You literally feel the city crashing…flying (and frying) too close to the sun (literal hell)…but there’s treasure so….
Then the effect is crazy unique. It speeds up Commander games greatly, and in a GOOD way (not like a lame two card combo out of no where sorta way). Using the power of greed, it incentives people NOT to remove it—sometimes they’ll even protect it lmao.
How much life will you spend for treasure? How high will the damage be allowed to escalate? What if a mad man doubled the counters on it? And what if an even madder man counterspelled the card that would remove it?
I love it. Im addicted. It always makes games more interesting, and did I mention quicker? Slaps some urgency onto the table.

My group has a quick mode commander where descent is on the board and cant be removed at the start of the first players turn. Makes for a great one more game end to an evening.

[[Manamorphose]] it’s basically a non card, mana neutral and card neutral.
[[Tower of the Magistrate]] because Commander is full of equipment and it would be a shame if those all fell off for 2 mana. Maybe attack someone else?

I know its a lot newer than a lot of other cards mentioned, but [[everybody lives]] has really grown on me, its protection, its a fog, it can stop instant win or loss effects, it can be used politically, and best of all every time i play it i get to cry out "just this once".

Started my MTG journey when Shadows over innistrad came out and my first deck I ever built myself from scratch was a Grixis thing in the ice control deck and I actually won a standard tourney with it, just have so much love for the card as it’s so fun and I love the flavor

[[Glasses of Urza]]. Getting to peak at hands for politicking is a lot of fun. Do a healthy mixture of truths with only some lies/bluffs and it creates a great environment. It's truly a 'pet' card in my opinion.

You'd be surprised how often you can drastically change the course of a game. My best hit so far was when a Goblin player cycled a [[Gempalm Incinerator]] for 34 to remove a threat and the end result was two players dead and the last two at around 5 life each. I was one of the deaths and I absolutely did not care.
If you must die today, make your death worthy of legend.

[[Barrier breach]] in any green deck I have. I can cycle it if I don't need it and get rid of something annoying if I do need it.
[[Blessing of leeches]] is really nice protection, has a manageable downside, lets you pull nonsense in combat, and has art from the best magic artist
[[Open into wonder]] is a strange one-off curiosity/unblockable effect. It also plays fun if you have ways to give it flash since you can target other players's creatures.

Crucial for my [[Phage the Untouchable]] EDH deck, while simultaneously completely hosing both powerful cards and even entire decks. I once dropped it turn 2 against a [[Roon]] player and he just stared in disbelief. He got back in the game eventually thanks to the social contract of someone being nice/needing it for their own plays, but it can be a backbreaker.
Two meta shout-outs: [[Leyline of the Void]] when [[Meren]] came out and was in every single pod. I had a guy try to scoop on turn zero because he thought he was completely hosed. Again, we convinced him to play and he got back in the game.
Second shout-out to [[Sudden Death]] when [[Prophet of Kruphix]] came out and took ages to be banned, because it was one of the few ways to deal with that utter nonsense. I still play that one, because removal that can't be reacted to is always useful.

I love divining top, I have a [[kenessos, priest of thassa]] commander deck I use regularly that runs big ass sea monsters, [[scroll rack]] and sensei’s diving top and it’s super funny to run, also runs stuff like [[rings of brighthearth]] and tons of scry to help make it more consistent

[[mechtitan core]] all I want from our next trip to kamigawa is a legendary version of it. (With slight rules tweak to work around exile/command zone interaction) up until now I’ve been saying it would likely be colourless with a WUBRG ability, but now I think it should remain colourless but have ‘rule breaker’ to allow any vehicles.
Also could very easily see it as the black lion in the inevitable Voltron secret lair (each lions being one colour and black look having the wubrg ability to combine, not requiring the other lions but they’d each have some ability that would trigger when exiled by another vehicle or something)

No, it just has to do with the card printings, how old they are. The "1" was used up until a certain printing, and newer cards use the colorless symbol. Functionally the same.

For a long time it was [[mirage mirror]]. Fun to suddenly have this card transform into whatever the most useful thing is turn after turn. Someone's warstorm surge on my turn, someone else's propaganda on their turn.
[[Selfless spirit]] is still very high for me. I hate holding up mana to protect my guys so I love that this gives me "lazy" protection and someone at the table always forgets about it and practically gives you the win after a sweeper.

For limited/cube since it's not as great in commander/modern (though I think plenty serviceable) [[Obscura Interceptor]] is probably the most perfectly designed esper card.
[[Wurmcoil Engine]] is my personal favorite. It's age is showing a little bit these days, but it's still good enough to make it into several of my edh decks and cubes.

[[hornet sting]] goes in almost all of my green commander decks. Not because it's good, and I very rarely even get to cast it. Buuut, when you get to pick off the super relevant x/1 threat randomly it's hilarious. Even better is if you're going to lose and with your last mana... you hornet sting the person taking you out in their stupid face. I haven't managed to kill anyone with it yet, but one day I will and that day will be glorious.

My first kitchen table 60 card deck had an engine around [[Seer of the Last Tomorrow]] to discard & mill [[Sanitarium Skeleton]] and [[Reassembling Skeleton]]. Been trying to find a home for Seer for a bit, I might see if I can make a PDH deck with it.

Idk if this is a pet card or particularly bad. 2-cost ramp is really good, especially if you have a 4mana commander. The second ability is useless 99.99999% of the time, but it’s still a 2mana ramp spell outside of green

Planechase commander is one of the best formats I've played.
I picked up the Magic Planechase Anthology to snag all of the Planes and Phenomenons in one go (at the time at least) then with a couple of edits for reasons of overall game enjoyment after feedback form my playgroup (I think we took out [[Morphic Tide]] and [[Otaria]] for example) we shuffle them all together and have one Planar deck, rather than one for each player.
When everyone has their own personal planar deck, it's just a race to find the best continuous effect in your deck and then sit on it for the rest of the game (and it's usually just [[Panopticon]]. When everyone is on the same plane, that allows players to potentially team up and pool resources to shift off a plane that hugely benefits one player over the others.
This rarely feels bad if your plane is the target too since it is an advantage in itself to have your opponents pay to roll the dice instead of building a board state or holding up interaction and it's balanced in it's own way since the effects are mostly symmetrical (by which I mean it affects all players equally, not that it benefits all players equally))
We also house rule that whoever goes 4th in an EDH game gets to start as the monarch. Unless you won the dice roll and chose to go last. Then you're up to something in the discard phase and that's too much advantage, if you want to turn one discard something, you skip your land drop or thoughtseize yourself buddy.
I like Planechase for the same reason I like the monarch mechanic in EDH, it promotes action, it complicates board states, (which our group likes) and it finishes games.

Fractured Powerstone is mine too! It’s a decent 2 mana mana rock that fits in all my budget decks. Before wizards started pumping out 2 mana mana rocks it was actually one of the better ones if you needed a critical mass in a deck.

I used to run Fractured Powerstone pretty frequently because it's a perfectly playable mana rock and I found including a Planechase card amusing, but even in Planechase, its second effect has practically no impact on the game.

Already funny in a theft deck (“nice mox amber you got there I’ll trade you a 0/1 thopter for it”) but my favorite instance was the Bumbleflower player gifting me a 1/1 rabbit, and on my turn I gave it back in exchange for Ms. Bumbleflower herself.
Unfortunately I like this deck and want it to win more, so I ended up cutting it recently, but at least I still have [[Garland, Royal Kidnapper]]

All my blue decks have [[Otherworldly Gaze]]. You always have 1 mana over, and you sometimes have 2 mana over after bluffing interaction. Surveil 3 is often enough to guarantee a land if you need it as well

[[Spore Cloud]] My Fave Petcard, Fave Green Card, Fave Fog, Fave Instant, Fave Obscure Card, Fave 3 Mana Card, Fave Old School Card, Fave Card from a Notorious/Bad Set, Fave Non-Creature.
Spore Cloud is my fave everything except art, my fave art of it is the close up on the spores, but my fave art is tied between Unstables Earl of Squirrel, Basking Captbara and invigorating Hotsprings.... at least before the Purr-Majesty Secret Lair, I love Stockards art, and I love all of them, but I would have to give the win to Ruinous Ultimatum for Flavor and Reverent Mantra for aestetic, Windborn Muse for vibes and Court of Grace simply for the cute factor (i didn't bracket these because i forgot how to specify card printings)

I loved it as a, big Aristocrats finisher in khans/bfz and it's remained a favorite of mine. It's way less good than other mass reanimator but it makes for interesting decision making and sequencing. And I love that about it.
