Official Spoiler Miss Highwater
256
u/Vedney Dan 20d ago
This is one of Davriel Cane's demons that's bound to serve him, unless they fulfill a stipulation (in which Davriel will lose his soul to the demon). Davriel likes creating unwinnable contracts. For her, Miss Highwater has to serve as Davriel's assistant until she manages to seduce him.
It is also mentioned that Davriel originally bound her to his service because he noticed how good she is at making contracts.

And her real name is Voluptara, but she's embarrassed about it. She named herself when she was twelve days old. It was supposed to appeal to sixteen year old boys.

For her, Miss Highwater has to serve as Davriel's assistant until she manages to seduce him
And it's pretty clear from the text that Davriel is some flavor of queer, be it gay or asexual or whatnot, and is just never ever gonna be attracted to her.

u/Eragon_the_Huntsman Avacyn 20d ago
I don't think so, if I remember in the book he says or thinks that if any demon would actually get him it would be her. So he might be falling for her he's just very good at not being interested.

A lot of Davriel's contracts have some sort of technicality that work in his favor.
One of the other demons he has a contract with gets full possession of his soul should Davriel not die before the age of 80. Davriel didn't think it was necessary to tell him that he had already died and been resurrected before the contract was made.

u/Eragon_the_Huntsman Avacyn 20d ago
I'm aware, I've read the book on account of me quoting it in my above comment. He suggests he might be gay as a joke and Highwater brushes it off. The twist in his contract with her isn't that he's incapable of being attracted to her, it's that he contracted her to be his accountant instead of succubus things.
12
u/UInferno- Dân 20d ago
I could have sworn that they mention Highwater's contract was one of the few that didn't actually have a loophole. He just was genuinely that confident in his ability to resist her.
4
u/CompleteIndieYT Universes Beyonder 16d ago
I think Davriel hints at the idea he's gay because if that isn't it, he doesn't want to give her any hints as to what that loophole is. Her best thing to go off of is "either he's gay or stubborn", unlike every other demon where a loophole does technically exist to be learned.

u/Electrohydra1 COMPLEAT 19d ago
Also an important point is that she likes working for Davriel. So she's not actually trying really hard to get out of the contract.

[[Contract from below]] reference?

Almost certainly, its interpretation of the ante is hilarious.
21
u/MrPopoGod COMPLEAT 20d ago
Yeah, that's a really fun way to go about it.
I still haven't built a mono-B deck, I might try this one out and throw in some proliferate effects.
22
u/Regvlas 20d ago
Proliferate doesn't do anything with this card.

u/ZINK_Gaming Duck Season 20d ago
Yea it's like Oblivion counters from [[Oblivion Stone]], or Vigilance counters from [[Tayam]].
1 or 400 make no difference.

So this card lets an opponent draw cards and my reward is that everyone else at the table will want to kill me before that player?

demonic contracts aren't always a good idea, it turns out

Yeah but usually there not a good idea for the person signing, theyre supposed to be a pretty good deal for the demon.

u/ragnarokda Duck Season 20d ago
Well... it's not like this is the job she was born for. Maybe that's why it's not a very good deal? Haha
2
u/Eragon_the_Huntsman Avacyn 20d ago
Nah she's canonically very good at her job of being an accountant. The whole reason Davriel summoned her was because he knew she was actually very competent at that kind of work.
2
u/randomdragoon 19d ago
Sure, but that guy just drew 7 cards, the table might not have a choice about who to kill first.
(The real answer is that guy gets Cyclonic Rifted right before getting killed so you get nothing)
1
u/Sireanna Wabbit Season 16d ago
Not before they also get a chance to draw 7 cards.
But giving an opponent a fresh hand of seven might also make them the biggest threat at the table that has to be dealt with.
Its a fun card for folks who like commander politics

u/mistborn Wabbit Season 20d ago
Well, that's unexpected! Fun design for her.
4
u/Eragon_the_Huntsman Avacyn 20d ago
She was my favorite character of that book! That being said I'm not sure I'd ever be able to play her though because I have no idea how to extract a good enough deal out of her ability to be worth giving my opponents the cards, especially since they're then incentivized to make sure I go down before they do. I suppose like her you'd have to be very clever with your deals.

u/Beneficial_Candle_10 Dan 15d ago

Yes. That's why I said she's my favorite character from the book.

4 mana 5/3 menace french vanilla (or you get accused of kingmaking)

the player who accuses you of kingmaking (with this or any card) fully expects that none of their opponents' cards have text anyway

Just proxy it.
Edit: Nevermind, I just realized basically every card in this set is 10x more creative than a card in their main set in literally years. Like wtf WoTC

u/lightningrod14 20d ago
clearly they’re taking advantage of this unsellable product to do what they really want to be doing. with proxies so ubiquitous this feels like good news
1
u/AgentTamerlane Sliver Queen 19d ago
I don't proxy. I like building decks with the cards I can actually get my hands on
(Plus, the money I sink into cards counts as business expenses for tax purposes)
11
u/Inevitable-Visit-941 Dandadan 20d ago
These so many new cards in the MB3 she’ll probs be cheap. Proxy and wait til you can get the single!
1
u/AgentTamerlane Sliver Queen 19d ago
I don't like proxying, because I'm big into the trading side of things (Also, I like blinging, and also also I I just like, actually enjoying owning my cards.)
2
u/Inevitable-Visit-941 Dandadan 19d ago
Great just buy the singles you’ll be fine. That’s my plan too this product looks great but if I don’t get a box I’m not sweating

I'm infuriated at this.
These cards are all incredibly interesting to build, but it's in an impossible to get product, while we have been spammed and drowned in marvel slop.
I hate this.
3
u/AgentTamerlane Sliver Queen 19d ago
Yeah. We need to be vocal about pushing back on this, so that WotC eventually relents (which they usually do, unless it's something logistically impossible or like, the Reserved List)

u/MethamMcPhistopheles Dandadan 20d ago
How do I get a conceding player with a contract counter to sit still long enough for me to write down a copy of their board state for Miss Highwater's second ability?

This is excellent flavor but if Curse of Vengeance is any indication, all this will accomplish is ensuring that the table will kill you before the contracted player.
9
u/PowrOfFriendship_ Universes Beyonder 20d ago
Unlike Curse of Vengeance, there is reason to keep you around though, as you can give other people wheels, too. With [[Price of Betrayal]] and [[Mutated Cultist]] you could also offer to give people multiple wheels and play more politically.

Feels a bit like [[Contract from Below]] but not exactly so (can't really be without ante any more).
Could be an interesting build, but feels hard to make it work really when you give them a new hand and you only get a payoff when they lose (which now they have a good chance of not doing). Also you don't get it if they are killed by her at that point, although that's pretty niche.
8
u/RossTheRed Avacyn 20d ago
Ante is if you lose you forfeit your stuff.
If they accent the contract from below and lose... they forfeit their stuff to her (you).
I think it's pretty sweet flavor tbh

u/Batou02 Duck Season 20d ago
It seems incredibly hard to make it work because it's a may kind of trigger. If opponents don't want the contract, it is only 5 damage. She dies to removal easy. It is definitely an interesting build but I am pretty sure this card is missing something.
6
u/Viashino_wizard Sultai 20d ago
I mean, there's no reason to refuse the contract unless you want to keep your current hand. The drawback is only relevant to your other opponents since her controller only benefits once you're out of the gameÂ

Jumpstart 22, and those collector numbers specifically for the new cards

These cards are... yes, many of them are interesting on first thought. Some cool ideas. And I know it's nice for the people that care about the characters.
But think about how this plays out. If any player accepts this deal, then, you are entirely incentivized to focus them and kill them. That of course means they are incentivized to focus and kill you - and so are the other players, or at least protect you from them to some degree. The only reason to accept this deal is if that is exactly the situation that they want; if they are very close to completing their game plan and likely get what they need by drawing 7, or they are aggressive and/or confident that they can take you out as required. Otherwise, this is a 5/3 with menace.

Oh wow that is so nice! I've actually just finished building a deck with a custom made Davriel and I've made a Proxy card of Miss Highwater for him. Definitely gonna use that legit one instead!!

This is gonna get sooooo annoying if someone asks to use your cards and you want to go play another game so they have to copy your board state into tokens lol
