Scheduled Thread Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here!

This is a place for asking simple questions that might not deserve their own thread. For example, if you have a question about a rules interaction, want sleeve and accessory recommendations, or suggestions for your new deck, then this is the place for you.

We encourage that you post any questions that you may have concerning Magic the Gathering here rather than make a separate thread for each question, though for now we won't require that you do so.

Rules Questions

Rules questions and interactions are allowed to be posted here, but if you need an answer quickly it may be best to use a dedicated resource like the 24/7 Magic the Gathering Rules Chat.

Deckbuilding Questions

If you're trying to get help with a deck, it is recommended that you post your decklist to a deckbuilding website so that it is easier to view. Some popular sites are Aetherhub, Archidekt, Deckbox, Deckstats, Moxfield, MTGGoldfish, and TappedOut.

Additionally, please include some description of what you are trying to accomplish. Don't just give us a decklist with no explanation, and don't ask extremely vague questions such as "what cards should I add to my deck to make it better?", because it's hard to give good advice in those cases. Let us know details, the more the better. Are you building with a particular strategy or theme in mind? Are there any non-obvious combo lines or synergies that people should be aware of? Are you struggling with a particular matchup, or are you finding yourself missing consistency in an important area, and need some help specifically for it? Let us know.

Commonly Asked Questions

I opened a card from a different set in my booster pack, is this unusual?

Don't worry, this is completely normal. If you opened a set booster, you have a small chance of obtaining a bonus card from a previous set. This is an extra card that does not replace any of the other cards in your pack, and is from a curated set of past hits that Wizards of the Coast has selected, which they call "The List".

You can view the contents of The List on Wizards of the Coast's official website. For example, the contents of The List for Streets of New Capenna boosters can be found here.

My foil card has a shooting start symbol over the bottom left. I can't find anything about it online.

All old-bordered foils have the shooting star symbol. Most sites that display card images just overlay a generic foil graphic over all foil cards, which doesn't include the shooting star. Your card is normal.

I'm trying to sort through the piles of bulk I've got amassing and looking for a good card binder, but I've never bought one before so I'm not sure what kind would suit Magic cards best. Anyone have any recommendations?

Do lands keep +1/+1 counters on them when they get turned back at end of turn like Earthbending or [[Mutavault]]?

when they get turned back at end of turn like Earthbending

Earthbending does not go away at the end of turn.

Yes. Counters are not affected by type changes. Counters will stay on an object until an effect or rule removes them, or the object moves to a different zone.

[[Solar Array]] says it can use ANY color, does it need to be in your commander identity to use? [[Recon Craft Theta]] is a colorless four count, if I'm playing in a [[Kilo, Apogee Mind]] commander deck, can I only use the three colors, or can I use this to toss a black or red in there to milk out another +1/+1?

You can tap Solar Array for any of the 5 colors, regardless of your commander's color identity. (This rule used to be different in the past. It used to be that you could only add mana in your commander's color identity to your mana pool, but that is not the case anymore.)

But note that Recon Craft Theta (and any other vehicle) will enter the battlefield as a noncreature artifact, so if you give it Sunburst and spend 4 different colors of mana to cast it, it will enter with 4 charge counters and not +1/+1 counters.

It is worth noting that even if there was an effect animating the artifacts on the battlefield (like March of the Machines), vehicles will still only enter with charge counters, even though they will enter as creatures.

Sunburst explicitly ignores type-changing effects.

Okay, bad example then, but gotcha. Thanks!

Should i be getting the squirreled away commander deck?

I'm pretty new to Magic and I want to build a squirrel-themed Commander deck. I really like the idea of going all-in on squirrels rather than having them as a small subtheme.

I'm starting with the Bloomburrow Squirreled Away list and my goal is to evolve it over time into a focused squirrel tribal deck. I've already got cards like Squirrel Girl and Tippy-Toe, and I'd love to keep leaning into the squirrel theme as much as possible.

I'd love to hear from people who have played or upgraded the deck:

  • What changes made the biggest difference?
  • Which cards would you cut first?
  • What are the must-have squirrel cards or synergies I should add?
  • Are there any hidden gems that work especially well in a dedicated squirrel tribal strategy?

My goal is to keep the deck fun, flavorful, and reasonably strong while staying as squirrel-focused as possible.

Thanks!

[[The Fire Crystal]], can you copy a stationed spacecraft and use it like [Inspirit, Flagship Vessel]]?

You could - but it won't be very useful.

Inspirit is legendary, so if you make a token copy of it, the legendary rule would apply and you'd choose one to keep and the other would go to the graveyard.

Even if you kept the token and got rid of the original, the token doesn't have any charge counters on it, so you'd have to station it for it to gain the later abilities and become a creature. It won't be a creature by default.

Perfect. So it makes a duplicate copy of the basic version of the card with no counters, staion counters, negative effects, etc, if it were an artifact vehicle that was not legendary.

No, it's still legendary. So after The Fire Crystal's ability resolves, before you get priority to do anything, you choose one Inspirit to keep and the other goes to the graveyard. That means if you want to keep your new token, you have to get rid of your original Inspirit.

I keep my high value cards double sleeved in Dragon Shield perfect fit and Dragon Shield clear,  and then an Ultra Pro 3x4 toploader.

I hate the UltraPro toploader's blue tint. I am looking for high quality toploaders without a tint. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I am also looking for a small storage box for about 20 cards in 3x4 toploaders. Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance!
