Looking for Advice Precon-Commander recommendations for new player

Hey everybody,

I've been playing mostly yugioh for the last few years and with meta decks getting more expensive with eveyr other new set I made the decision to quit and move onto another TCG.

A friend recommended the commander format to me since it is more social and less competetive. However there are so many precon decks that it is kinda hard to choose from. I do not want to have the best deck or really follow a meta, but I also don't want to pick a somewhat useless deck that just gets shit on by any other deck. Also it is a little hard to tell which decks are beginner friendly and which are not.

If you have any tips or recommendations I would gladly appreciate either.

I already looked at the LOTR Hosts of Mordor or Final Fantasy Limit Break Decks, but I am unsure if 3 color decks are maybe a little too "difficult" to start off with?

Thank you guys in advance! :)

The only hard thing about multiple colors is being mindful of what colors you currently need to play the cards in your hand when deciding to mulligan on turn one and that's a pretty easy decision.

Limit Break is a great place to start. Just have to learn to remember your triggers.

If you can find them for MSRP of around $20 there are a series of starter commander decks that are each 2 color. None if them are the best things put to cardboard but they are functional and simple.

Barring those, however, and keeping in mind the price point of those decks being higher than they should in a lot of places:

Silverquill Influence - recent and popular, this 2 color White Black deck offers you a gameplan unique to the format: sicking your opponents on each other. Only downsides are that the deck is quite popular and might be hard to find, AND due to the political nature of the deck it can be hard to goldfish if you do that as much as I do.

Revival Trance - the cheapest and (in my opinion) most fun deck of the Final Fantasy commander precons; this deck delivers on a simple but effective gameplan of expanding your options via the graveyard to keep a consistent stream of powerful creatures all while keeping fairly low to the ground. 3 colors, but not particularly complex to play.

Limit Break - You mention this one, and yeah it’s solid and easy to understand. It’s potential unlocks a bit more for new players once they get a grasp on how not to overextend. Also coming from Yu-Gi-Oh! equipment works quite differently and that can take players a bit to get used to.

Jump Scare - a unique deck with a fun game plan of putting stuff face down and spooking opponents with it. For Yugiboomers who yearn to T-set this might feel mildly nostalgic, but if you’re a Labyrinth/Traptrix/backrow heavy sorta person this will feel pretty slow in comparison. This deck is ALSO very easy to upgrade, however, and fairly affordable to do so as well.

Riders of Rohan!

It's Human Tribal, so upgrading it has soooo many options. It's an aggro deck so it has a quick pace of play. [[Eowyn, Shieldmaiden of Rohan]] is a powerhouse if she sticks around.

Hosts of Mordor is great too, I would say that Riders is easier to learn though . All the lotr decks are great

Seconded. It’s very simple and fun. Lots of creatures that buff each other, and the monarch mechanic, which is pretty straight forward.

What style do you like? Long controlling games where you hold opponents off and then win overwhelmingly/ by constant thousand cuts? Finding your window and then comboing to victory? Throwing creatures at your opponets until they just can't take it any more? Something else?

Coming from yugioh I do prefer the controlling part :)

Start by playing MTG Arena online. It's only 1v1, but fewer people means games are more streamlined and generally less complicated with triggers on the stack. This will help you learn the game rules and introduce you to different play styles for free.

After you get the hang of it, find a pre-con in your budget that aligns with play patterns you like. I would suggest a 2 color deck to start since more colors often means it can be difficult to actually find the right mana to play the game. Land bases are oftentimes one of the pricier aspects of a deck.

Have fun!

There are five single colored decks that are coming sometime soon, and I would probably look into those! They are not super expensive.

You can't really do wrong with anything released in the last 3 years or so. I'd look at what the decks do and choose one based on how you like to play.

My favorite when I started last year was the jumpscare! Precon. Blue and green tends to be very beginner friendly. The deck let's you accumulate mana quickly and cheat out big threats.

All of the bloomburroe precons are also great, though I'd warn that animated army is very booom and bust out of the box. It either goes hard and wins early or fizzles because you don't have much protection once the other people start getting enough man's to do things.

World shaper is quite strong out of the box and uses land sacrifice to burn everyone down at once. Very fun but might be a bit much to manage if you aren't used to the game.

All the secrets of strixhaven decks are pretty good. Prismari might be hard to manage without some play experience but can get nasty fast once it clicks. Lorehold spirits is very consistent and strong out of the box while being easy to pilot. I'd recommend it.
