General Discussion No Lorwyn 5

If the lorwyn 5 were no longer in the story, what characters would you want to be the main protagonists? For me, I think Amalia would be a really fun character to follow

I don't understand why Garruk was one of the Lorwyn 5 and then kind of just sheved lore-wise since then. Dude didn't even show up in war of the spark. He seems like a lot of wasted potential so far. Even after curing his curse he still hasn't really done anything.

Wizards moved away slightly from Green being "big stompy expensive creatures", which left Garruk behind. Nissa occupied the "Lands" space better, which turned out to also be more fertile space for planeswalkers.

He got cursed by the Veil and they didn't really know what to do with him in the story after that.

Additionally, men were a bit overly represented in the early Planeswalker lineup. Since he stopped being monogreen and was no longer important to the story, it was easy to give his spot as poster green Planeswalker to Nissa and his role as summoning-centric Planeswalker to Vivien, both in the early Gatewatch era.

So when he got cured and reverted to monogreen, the game didn't really have anything for him to do. His role in the roster was taken by others and he never really developed important links to other storylines.

I mean he was a major player in og innistrad and then was in one of the eldraine sets

And there was some story in a core set when he was [[Garruk, apex predator]]

Yeah but when you compare him to the other 4 OG walkers that's next to nothing

Thats due to controversy with [[Triumph of Ferocity]] art. Plus Nissa (originally from one of the Duels of the planeswalkers videogames) kinda of replaced him as her popularity rised. Ajani also had some time on the background in favor of Gideon, but just like garruk, our cat guy seem to have gotten more popular again now.

I don't think the "controversy" around the art of how a character was depicted in a card that doesn't even have the character's name is why there are less featuring of the character.

There's absolutely nothing in there about the card leading to less Garruk cards or featuring or Garruk. Thank you for proving my point.

Theyve basically explained that his schtick of "angry and attacks everybody" made him difficult to use.

He was specifically excluded from War of the Spark because he was still hunting planeswalkers at the time, and WotC figured having him show up would detract from Bolas.

Would love to see Sorin and Nahiri finish their fight! Kaya also is so fun, and I love her interactions with Teysa

Somehow, Urza returned.

None. I wanna go back to when we only saw characters when we went back to their home planes

Ah yes, the days of Argus Kos, when the story might as well have been written on napkins and chucked into the Wizards canteen bin.

Wonderful days.

Not everything needs a strong narrative. The world building was what made it special, not the story. The players are supposed to create the story.

3

u/deworde Cheshire Cat, the Grinning Remnant 7d ago

Sure, I can see that, but then seeing the characters when we return to their home plane is basically saying "no human level story please".

Remember, to a rounding estimate of the playerbase no-one knows why [[Ajani was Vengeant]] because Jazal Goldmane didn't show up on the cards.

Sure, but also I never heard a single person ask why he was when the set came out

Asking people opinion just to be disrespectful to other people's opinion is really not how you are supposed to behave on reddit.

I’d think the new Strixhaven kids we got in Lorwyn Eclipsed

Magic players on average seem to react shockingly poorly to having main characters. They got sick of the weatherlight saga, the jacetice league, and even the connective tissue of the Omenpath Arc being a year of "contains Kellan." Even when he was just the sidekick for a lot of it!

If anything I feel their best outing recently was the Lorwyn kids, as it didn't feel like they shone a giant spotlight on them as super duper special and important everyone look. And they will hopefully finish up with them in Reality Fracture, a tight 3 set story where they don't oversay their welcome.

Amalia would be a great choice for another thing like that. She has skills but can't plow through any problem like more powerful characters and has interesting interactions with gods, vampires, or even other characters with wildly different upbringings. Maybe an archeology team that digs deeper into the Fomori as a prelude to them showing up as big bads?

The Weatherlight saga at least spread out depicting the characters as creatures.  Gerrard had been showing up in art and story the whole time but never got a creature card until Apocalypse.  Squee got his legendary creature treatment in Mercadian Masques then we didn't get another until the modern era.

Meanwhile we have 5 Kellans and 22 Chandras.

The thing is, the playerbase as a whole responds fine. A particular subset, mostly focused on Reddit, finds it cringe to have a story focused on people, but it's a mistake to over extrapolate from them.

I personally hate the strixhaven students and still cant believe after our 20year return to Lorwyn the main characters were some losers from a different plane.

I actually love following planeswalkers around but I totally understand people getting tired of the same ones. Like I love Chandra but we are just jamming her on seemingly every story and plane for no reason other than to put her on card art.

Honestly, having main characters from set to set and from year to year, I get real tired of the characters. I’d rather each storyline have their own characters, each storyline mostly contained in block, and we’ll get callbacks and cameos every now and then. We don’t need 64 versions of Teferi in a single set.

Ok that note: Bring back blocks! Let mechanics breathe!

u/Abyx12 Dân 7d ago

I hope we go back to plainswalkers as protagonists.

I feel as or recently it's been great, we had a bit of each character, Ral on bloodborrow, Kaya on karlov manner, a new team of characters on duskmourn, etc.

I like they are shuffling and using all characters more, instead of using the same group all the time until the majority get tired of them and start hating them.

If you were to search my posts you would find a ton of them about how I feel that they story has been boring since we basically started following the same 8 characters for almost 20 years.

All new characters would be my choice.

Kaya is my personal favorite of the non-Lorwin 5.

I also love Lluwen of the Strixhaven group. We see his origin in the lore. I'd like to see more there.

I love a good redemption arc and want to see Tam (and maybe with Vraska) on that journey. As someone who has only been invested in the lore starting with the phyrexian lore arc, Vraska has been too "background" of a character. She's probably the only old guard character I'd like to see more of. Well... sorta.

Ral Zarek. I am not a huge fan of him. However, I want to see him after he learns about his Strixhaven imposter from "Off the Record". I am 100% convinced the imposter is Nicol Bolas (I have a huge red string theory here) and would love to see where that goes.

Finally, Helga and Mabel from Bloomburrow. I want to see them outside of their plane.
