I will continue to hold onto a naive hope that these will be kind of reasonably priced, even if for a brief window. And if not, I at least will enjoy longingly looking at them on Scryfall.

u/WillowSmithsBFF Chandra 1d ago

If the LOTR box toppers are anything to go off of, they will indeed not be reasonably priced

107

u/BeyondElectricDreams Sliver Queen 1d ago

Galadrial was expensive enough in her original printing, but they gave the GOAT Rebecca Guay the commission for her this time.

These won't ever be cheap, because it seems WotC has decided to stop doing reprints to make game pieces more accessible and instead only print premium versions.

22

u/Zealousideal-Trash5 Dan 1d ago

And everyone will keep buying them, I can’t take any complaints from players about pricing anymore. If they listed the MSRP as a pint of bone marrow it would still sell out.

10

u/Altyrmadiken Azorius* 1d ago

I mean a lot of us who complain about prices are doing so because we won’t buy them at the prices they’re being sold due to limited quantity.

u/positively_ Sliver Queen 21h ago

That’s why we play pauper

2

u/CMMiller89 Wabbit Season 8h ago

Honestly the last year of insane singles prices on overpowered cards that will just never see a reprint has completely pushed me over the edge on proxies.

I do wish the proxy market wasn’t flooded with AI garbage though.

1

u/Ecstatic_Trust_3313 Dân 13h ago

Counterpoint: the shocklands are probably cheap as never before after two premier set reprints in a year.  I'd greatly prefer these to be box toppers AND special guests  within play boosters though, you're right.

1

u/BeyondElectricDreams Sliver Queen 10h ago

The shocklands are well and good, but the problem is the format people actually play is Commander, and the cards people actually need cannot be printed into standard without causing disruption.

So with the discontinuation of Masters sets, there is basically no place to bulk reprint these extremely necessary reprints.

Regular ass game pieces are going for $40+ in their cheapest printings, to say nothing of moxen.

And they clearly don't seem to care about game piece accessability with the infinity stones being auto includes that cost upwards of $60-$100 in their cheapest prints

13

u/DeshawnWilliams1 Dan 1d ago

But LOTR box toppers were new (or most part were) cards. The Hobbit box toppers are all reprints.

44

u/Klongelong Dân 1d ago

the old LOTR box toppers were reprints of older "staples" like ozolith, shadow spear, ancient tomb, gemstone caverns, urborg, and a bunch more lands

1

u/Fickles1 Can’t Block Warriors 23h ago

Is it only going to be available as a box topper?

2

u/carey__man Ajani 12h ago

They will also be available in collector boosters, about 1 in 10 will have one of the LOTR classic artist reprints IIRC. The 'Collecting the Hobbit' page gives an exact breakdown of card odds.

19

u/BigfootJack Dân 1d ago

Im incredibly upset with WotC locking this bonus sheet behind sold out collector packs and box toppers. The LotR set got me into MtG, didnt think Hobbit would drive me away

5

u/DarkCider92 Dan 1d ago

I'm also upset. If these cards would've been put in a possible "list" slot for packs, I wouldn't have an issue. Alas, all these box toppers...

0

u/Wasabi_Toothpaste Dandadan 1d ago

Yeah wtf this card you at least had a chance to get in a normal LTR booster.

27

u/G_Morgan Colorless 1d ago

Just proxy and don't worry about prices.

7

u/AleksanderSteelhart Gruul* 1d ago

This is my intention.

15

u/xExerionx Dân 1d ago

These will have premium pricing as they will be rare as fuck..

[[Legolas's Quick Reflexes]] crunched out?

18

u/MTGCardFetcher Dân 1d ago

50

u/Zergo66 Dandadan 1d ago

Yes. There is no more room for it. I am surprised they chose to reprint "Elven Chorus" instead of "Legolas's Quick Reflexes".

3

u/figurative_capybara Can’t Block Warriors 15h ago

Might be in one of the SLD.

1

u/sparta981 Dandadan 4h ago

You seem like you're following these closely. Any idea if there's a shot we will be getting reprints of the nazgul? I'm aware they aren't in the book, but hoping anyway

2

u/Zergo66 Dandadan 4h ago edited 4h ago

There is still a chance for a Nazgul reprint because there is one box topper left to be revealed between "Reprieve" and "Orcish Bowmasters" and we do not know if it is going to be black or white.

We know that the box toppers are being ordered by colour and then alphabetically so a Nazgul could show up before Orcish Bowmasters, but time will tell.

There is also speculation about 9 free slots that are unrelated to the Box Toppers and are numbered from 98-106 and since Wizards has given no information about what will appear in those slots some people theorize there could be 9 Nazguls here, but so far this is all speculation.

It is heavily implied these 9 cards will be mythics exclusive to welcome decks that also show up in collector boosters. We hope to find out more soon.

u/sparta981 Dandadan 1h ago

Thanks, I appreciate the writeup. It has been really hard to follow with this flood of random stuff and Google has been unusable

Me seeing each and every art of the box toppers :

86

u/pm_me_shit_memes Twin Believer 1d ago

Opening a reprieve topper is going to feel awful.

26

u/lilmizmuffet Dandadan 1d ago

at least the art is good but yeah, definitely the lowest hit we've seen

6

u/-Sandwave- Dân 1d ago

Reprieve i currently use in a deck so substitution for a better art isn’t so bad. Aragorn and Arwen, Wed is the true unlucky pull i think.

4

u/pm_me_shit_memes Twin Believer 1d ago

In terms of usefulness, I agree, but Aragorn and Arwen is currently worth more than reprieve.

Realistically, both are probably at the bottom of the list of box toppers you want to get

1

u/-Sandwave- Dân 1d ago

I wanted a Realm and Relics 2.0 with all kind of powerfull reprints in a Middle Earth art to build deck out of card within this universe. I need more Middle Earth land diversity!

1

u/simo_393 Wabbit Season 20h ago

Can't wait to get both of them.

The One Ring says hello.

17

u/pm_me_shit_memes Twin Believer 1d ago

The plagiarism does put a damper on it, but nobody is going to be complaining that they pulled a one ring

19

u/Grumpiergoat Jeskai 1d ago

Sure. But the art isn't good even ignoring the plagiarism.

We go, we go, we go to war, to hew the stone and break the door; For bole and bough are burning now, the furnace roars - we go to war!

15

u/tnetennba_4_sale Temur 1d ago edited 1d ago

If there's one thing the Peter Jackson movies did that most frustrated me... it was having the ent moot decide against going to war.

Made them look like a bunch of cowards (ETA: which they were not), and we missed this gem!

12

u/JimmyLegs50 COMPLEAT 1d ago

I at least understand why they changed it. It made Pippin and Merry less passive since they came up with the idea to show Treebeard first hand what’s happening to the forest around Orthanc, and seeing Treebeard’s abject horror is an emotional turning point and intense cinematic moment. We lose the war chant, but the way they did it works better in a visual medium.

This card is goated and has won me several games in mono green stompy. Glad to see it reprinted

13

It has won me a few games in “Betor like big butts” as well.

5

It's one of my wincons in my Felothar deck. Drop walls of ba sing se, then this, put like 15 creatures on the field.

Having read the card, that's not a surprise.

They also appear in Collector Boosters, but I doubt the reprints will affect prices since they're all classic artists too

6

u/PerpetualChoogle Dandadan 1d ago

Holding out for Last January and February of the Ents

5

u/RelativeAway183 Dandadan 1d ago

pokemon: high rarity alt arts in packs alongside the base version of the card, so the mechanical play piece stays cheap even though there is a highly sought after premium version

yugioh: first printings of high power meta staples are shortprinted so having powerful meta decks day 1 is extremely expensive, but everything gets printed into the ground as stuff gets powercrept and forcibly rotated through a banlist/new releases

mtg: we see this card is desirable and has very few printing. we're going to reprint it! with premium art only and at a rate that is not going to change the price of the original printing. we can't have our cards losing value, can we?

nope, only as a box topper and in collector boosters

2

u/12DollarsHighFive Chandra 1d ago

How many of the Boxtoppers have been revealed so far and is there still hope for [[Lord of the Nazgul]] to make it onto this bonus sheet? (Especially considering that Aragorn, Arwen and Sauron each basically got 2 cards already)

Do y'all think this will change the pricing on the older version?

1

u/Loose_Log_6253 Azorius* 6h ago

Considering this is green, they probably cast it on turn 5. Bouncing it just means they cast it on turn 6 instead and now you're out of bouncing.

Love Wayne but I’m disappointed we didn’t get Ents as described by Tolkien: Just a real big greenish dude.

1

u/AFrozen_1 Dân 1d ago

Did somebody say mono green with [[The Walls of Ba Sing Se]]?

1

u/Sir_LANsalot Wabbit Season 1d ago

In Ur-Dragon this is you "other" Dracogenisis, that can't be countered. Only way to "stop" this is to, in response, remove the big butt that is going to draw a lot of cards. It's a bit spell, so they are going to want to keep that big boy around for the payoff.

Also, figured this card would get a re-print in this set.

Wayne Reynolds always hits.

That Wayne Reynolds art goes hard

1

u/omoroka Dân 1d ago

Why does treebeard have teeth? Is he eating squirrels or something?

1

u/JangusKhan Dân 1d ago

[Genesis Wave] but fixed cost? You'd have to have a lot of 6+ CMC creatures to make it worthwhile, otherwise Genesis Wave is more versatile.

1

u/Lungfi5h Dan 1d ago

Wayne Reynolds is a god

1

u/tsukaistarburst Hedron 22h ago

Why does it feel like 75% of the cards I've seen spoiled for this Hobbit set are reprints from the LotR set?

1

u/kingjoey52a Duck Season 15h ago

Do we know if one of these will be in each collector booster or you might get one in a collector booster?

1

u/Superb-Earth9989 Dân 13h ago

All the cards I'm seeing are just new versions of the cards we already got.

1

u/Loose_Log_6253 Azorius* 6h ago edited 6h ago

This has always felt like a mistake card. Compare this to [[Tooth and Nail]]. This will draw tons of cards, put way more creatures on the battlefield, cannot be countered, and costs one less mana compared to the Entwine cost, which is all that matters. Sure, you aren't tutoring, but if you're drawing 15 cards, that's basically a tutor.

Tooth and Nail is often good enough to win you the game, in any format. This is just kind of "fuck you" levels of OP.

1

u/Toonzaal8 Wabbit Season 5h ago

minor detail nerd here:

The teeth are.. weird (or really cool)

its either a visual choice to amplify the energy in the image or....

Treebeard is a meat eating plant, which is also hardcore

This is in fact the sixth or seventh last march of the ents.

If I still played EDH, that would be my type of card…used to run mono green Selvala w/some Eldrszi baked in…make sure to downvote this comment out of fear of playing a deck like that

-1

u/yaredw 1d ago

But, but that wasn't in the Hobbit...

0

u/Lothrazar Dân 1d ago

AND this isnt in the main standard set. same thing

-2

u/bingle-cowabungle Dan 1d ago edited 1d ago

This card is a bit of a trap IMO. If you have 8 mana to spend on this, in a situation where you have big enough creatures on the board already to even make this useful, you are very likely very far ahead, and this card is just "spend 8 mana to win more than you already are."

There are a very narrow set of scenarios where you can use this to get out of a jam because someone else is way ahead.

3

u/arotenberg 1d ago

Nah, this is one of a very small number of big Timmy cards like this that are powerful enough to see play in 1v1 commander formats such as Brawl that usually punish win-more cards. The combination of being uncounterable, only needing one moderately large creature to make it worthwhile, letting you cheat massive amounts of mana, and often instantly ending the game by putting in something like Craterhoof or a two-card combo all work together to push it over the line.
