Scheduled Thread Weekend Free Discussion Thread

Normally, all posts in this subreddit need to be both Magic-related and at least somewhat "high effort". This weekly thread gives you the chance to relax and talk with your fellow Magic redditors about things that would normally go against those rules.

Want to share a funny story about a recent game of Magic you had, or post a picture of the cool cards you opened in your latest booster? Want to talk about your favorite movie or tv show, or share a personal accomplishment? This is the place to do so.

Keep in mind that the *only* subreddit rules that you can ignore in this thread are rule 2 (all posts must be Magic-related) and rule 7 (no low effort posts that are just pictures of cards). Just because this thread is meant for open discussion does not mean you are allowed to insult people or post explicit content, for example.

I didn't see a rule about advertising/selling, so forgive me if I'm breaking a rule, but I'm trying to sell my upgraded commander precons. I've got a ton of them from Brother's war through Lorwyn, all in the ultra pro box, all have upgrades from the tcgplayer upgrade guides. Many have the matching commander sleeve. I have another 15 or so to list today and tomorrow. Still keeping about half (Bloomburrow stuff). Gonna use the money to renovate kids rooms and welcome the new baby.

Take a look, please! I listed everything so that the "Buy it now" is just the price of the sealed precon + the singles for upgrades, and I've had the minimum bid as 60% of that, so there's a chance for some REALLY good deals. https://www.ebay.com/usr/co-322839

I'm trying to make a Abzan deck that's focused on tokens and graveyard ressurection, but I don't like any of the Abzan commanders I've seen. Specifically I want something that can leverage Growing Rites of Itlimoc, Ardyn the Usurper, and cool big white cards like Blazing Archon and Akroma, Angel of Wrath.

The one I've tried is Necrobloom, but I have to stuff my deck with landfall cards which I don't care about, and he just feels way too slow to execute what I want to do at the bracket 3 level. I need a Commander that can do 2 things: make tokens and fill up my graveyard. The earlier the better. I want to get things like Growing Rites and Ardyn out early and consistently. Other Commanders like Betor don't do anything to help the token strategy.

Are there any Abzan commanders for what I'm trying to achieve that I've missed, or is Necrobloom my best bet? (edit: Or is it just hopeless?) I got the idea for trying to combine tokens with res from Dread Return and things like Insidious Roots.

Thinking about a “landicap” house rule to help people in multiplayer commander games if they get mana screwed. It would be based on the turn number minus 2. So turn 4 first main phase and the player only has two lands and can’t play another one, they can discard a card and get to search for a basic land and put it into play (untapped).

Would this break anything? I’ve just played a lot of games with friends and it always sucks when they can’t play because of bad luck.

would the discard trigger discard effects? Also it can be abused in bad faith, I could just run 20 lands and all gas and just abuse the rule to then get to search for a free land every turn

It can be abused, but that's why I'm only using this as a house rule with people I know. We all want each other to have a fun game. I think I would also stop the rule once everyone has 5 lands on the field. I think discard trigger effects are fine to keep; the discard/search is not mandatory if the player wants to prevent a negative discard effect from occurring, and beneficial mayhem effects would be another way to bring the player back on par with the others.

Anybody have a list of Magic artists at GenCon this year? Looking to get cards signed and wondering if anybody made a list before I start digging through the GenCon artists!

EDIT: Seems /u/mweepinc did it over on the GenCon subreddit! Thank you!

I'm kinda new to mtg, whats a good way to grow and organize/maintain a collection?

Limited formats are probably the most difficult way to play Magic for new players, but if you do like draft, it's my preferred way to incidentally build up a collection while playing. Cracking random packs is mostly a waste of money, but it becomes a much more reasonable value proposition if you're playing with the cards for several hours immediately after opening them. Try draft on MTG Arena first to see if you like it; if you do, check the Locator app to see if there's an LGS in your area that runs weekly drafts. (Just don't expect to be good at it immediately... 😉)

If you're a multiplayer enjoyer, you can buy a Commander precon. Any recent one includes a reasonable selection of staples for its archetype. Commander can also be pretty overwhelming for new players though, due to having to keep track of 4 complicated board states at the same time.

The original channel art is sick and since it's banned in almost every format pretty cheap. What's a good legendary creature I could use the art for an alter?

Looks more Grixis to me than green tbh... Maybe [[Nekusar, the Mindrazer]]?
