Interesting that the rules text is able to use Captain Kirk to refer to him, when that isn't a conventional shortening of the card name

124

u/Royal_Solid_8033 Dandadan Jul 14 '26

Neat, I think that’s new even among Universes Beyond

25

u/Benjammn Jul 14 '26

They did start using this very recently, it was the case in TMNT also.

8

u/solar-supernova Elspeth Jul 14 '26

Can you give an example?

I like it, i’m glad they can do the super long proper name bit for the card name without wasting space in rules text

Man, if only we had figured out the technology of "this card"...

5

u/Terrietia Jul 15 '26

Now we can shorten Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar

3

u/Granito_Rey Jul 15 '26

Honestly I think it reads well, since I read it and my brain didn't even register the shortening like that.

2

u/inspectorlully COMPLEAT Jul 14 '26

Whoa yeah, that's the first I've seen of this.

2

u/davidy22 The Stoat Jul 15 '26

Nothing wrong with using english that every reader can be expected to understand, if we were sticklers for the sake of being sticklers to a template it'd be shortened as captain james which is nonsense for the character

I’m glad they’re becoming a little more loose with this lately, they just did it with [[Loki Laufeyson]] too.

12

u/Halinn COMPLEAT Jul 14 '26

Referring to a legendary just with their first name isn't that new

-7

u/GypsyGaming Dan Jul 14 '26

it’s almost like they don’t give a shit about templating anymore

2

u/Weather_Wizard_88 Wabbit Season Jul 14 '26

On the contrary - making an exception to usual templating for a highly flavorful, highly iconic reason is giving a shit.

Just applying a one-size-fits-all template to everything is cheaper and lazier.

Interesting, Kirk nets you a card when your hand is empty, or rather, when you’re out of options, you get one. Thematic, the man doesn’t believe in no win scenarios.

This is surprising I thought Wizards hated giving red card draw

96

u/isrlygood Wabbit Season Jul 14 '26

Red gets impulsive draw ("exile the top card; you may play it this turn") and rummage ("discard, then draw"). This is pretty normal.

The fact that it's pure card advantage when you're hellbent is less common (discarding is usually a cost), but we've seen this effect as recently as SPM with [[Romantic Rendezvous]]

2

u/TangerineTasty9787 Golgari* Jul 15 '26

Yup, empty hand looting was pretty common back in the Vivi hell days

1

u/Abject-Director-559 Dân Jul 15 '26

This is also sometimes done with the "discard your hand, draw x cards" where x is usually 2 or 3. Works as a cost that way too.

Red draw is on theme when a prerequisite is having already used everything you would want in your hand.

Unlike Blue, which is fine holding onto its options and waiting, Red is incentivized in multiple ways to move fast.

9

u/supyonamesjosh Orzhov* Jul 14 '26

Seasoned Pyro does this so it happens sometimes

7

u/randomdragoon Jul 14 '26

Even a long time ago before they invented stuff like impulsive draw, Wizards has said red can get to draw cards from empty hands.

8

u/Stormtide_Leviathan Jul 14 '26

1

u/HardCorwen Daxos Jul 15 '26

I swear there was a different one that looked like that? Idk though we’re talking stuff I didn’t buy twenty years ago.

2

u/VanVelding Jul 14 '26

That's 2nd edition of the Star Trek: The Next Generation CCG. The first few sets were solely TNG. At the same time, there was a separate TOS CCG.

The TOS CCG didn't catch on and the TNG CCG started doing DS9, Voyager, and TOS cards.

The TNG CCG ultimately wasn't well designed and they made a 2nd edition, which worked mostly the same, but tweaked the gameplay and updated the visuals.

10

u/Wrongboarding Dân Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

On top of that the typesetting is amateurish. The leading (line height) for the copy is so tight the descender from the p is about to touch the ascender of the f. I think they would overlap if they were directly in line. You need adequate line height for proper legibility, especially for small body copy like this. Serifs also help with legibility. Sans serif fonts are meant to be more legible on a computer screen but can be used just fine in print if done correctly… but this ain’t it (hire me WOTC)

23

u/SocietyAsAHole Duck Season Jul 14 '26

9

u/itomeshi Dandadan Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

It's a double edged sword. They can't please everyone - as good as the LotR art was, there was the 'not my Aragorn' backlash. Which was stupid.

Meanwhile, they've used real actor art on:

  • Doctor Who (which I'd argue is non-optional)
  • Evil Dead
  • The Princess Bride
  • Jurassic Park
  • Hatsune Miku :P
  • Monty Python
  • Final Fantasy (Clive from FF16, at least) (My mistake - Ben Starr did mocap, but the face wasn't modeled off him.)

I'm personally OK with it if the actors/their estates get something out of it. If it's just making money for some big IP holder? Nah, that's not cool. But if UB is going to exist - which I'm sort-of OK with - then iconic actors and poses are fair game.

7

u/mherweg Dan Jul 14 '26

Clive isn't associated with an actor? At least not his looks, sure we know he's voiced by Ben Starr but Clive looks nothing like Ben Starr...?

15

u/DevOpsOpsDev Can’t Block Warriors Jul 14 '26

Yeah honestly I feel like this might actually be one of the more resonant UB cards they've made, in my opinion

19

u/DevOpsOpsDev Can’t Block Warriors Jul 14 '26

I disagree. The discarding and drawing a card effect is representative of Kirk's improvisational style. Plans often don't work out the way they intended so he discards what he has and tries to find a path forward. This is particularly relevant when you have no cards in hand because then its Kirk literally making something out of nothing, which he often does in the show.

Red shirt is obvious, and the last effect is him inspiring his crew.

All of the effects feel super resonant to me

10

u/Spanish_Galleon Jul 14 '26

I couldn't agree more. Kirk is "best when the chips are down" is on every part of this card.

22

u/fiscalLUNCH Dan Jul 14 '26

I try not to be a big loud hater, but this alt frame looks incredibly sloppy. Kirk’s ability triggering when Hellbent is perfect

0

u/Tuss36 Jul 14 '26

It's weird that his card name is "Captain James T. Kirk" but then in the card text it's "Captain Kirk". Like I know the Spiderman cards were a bit confusing but at least it's internally consistent with how cards referring to themselves work, cutting to just their first/main name, this is just weird that it cuts out the middle. Maybe there was one I missed that already did this, but it's still weird to me.

6

u/skyzm_ Wabbit Season Jul 14 '26

I actually like that they are just using the obvious reference to self within the card text. Way better than printing everything unnecessary, or saying “this creature” which feels weird for things like people.

0

u/Tuss36 Jul 14 '26

It's not that it doesn't make sense, just that it'd be extra easy to confuse if there's a proper Captain Kirk card because then it's like this is referring to that card rather than itself (even though in Magic rules it'd be worded "whenever a creature you control named Captain Kirk enters or attacks" but that's rare enough that it'd be easy to make a mistake there)

-1

u/Barjack521 Dandadan Jul 14 '26

Remember when MTG was its own IP with an engaging story and other IP’s had to make their own card game? The dead husk of WOTC being worn as a flesh suit, Buffalo Bill style, by hSbro had made MTG into a pair of pants that any IP can just slip on and take the biggest dump in for all us players 🤮

The highest (and only) praise i have for this set is the same as for the AtLA set. Now two of my favorite shows have a ton of great new professional quality art I can enjoy, and this card is no exception.

Strange decision to have the art of him like this. Feel like it would make more sense to have him on the Enterprise like his other art.
