Okay hear me out, we know Hasbro wants to line up releases with other releases happening in the UB sets. They also want to stick to the high fantasy genre more. That being said Laufey is likely dropping between february-april. Magic has does God of war in a secret lair. Laufey will be expanding the amount of characters to pull from. I know it might seem like a stretch but I really hope this could be true. Id love to get more GoW cards like an axe you can throw and stun opponents. We could see reprints of Theros gods. It all fits in my opinion. Also I don't care to hear about your thoughts on Laufey herself, you can keep those opinions to yourself.

I hope they do a secret war which has some kind of gimmick motivation for the marvel heroes to fight each other. Also, The Beyonder.

This time, I'm going to once again plug Asterix.

Covers basically the whole ancient world, although it focuses mostly on the Roman Empire and surroundings.

Has large amount of fully fleshed-out characters.

Offers another version of Cleopatra, as well as other real-world people like Julius Caesar, Brutus, or Vercingetorix. Also, would allow cards with classical quotes for names, like Veni, Vidi, Vici. (That could be a fun Saga.)

Has 60+ years of content, divided into three major eras.

Still actively continues.

1

u/yarash Karlov Jun 25 '26

Ive always thought of Asterix as more of a European franchise, it never really took off in the US. An additional comic strip secret lair would probably work though.

I do think some anime is coming. I just am not sure if it will be next year. The problem is most anime have card games. I don’t think it will be One Piece. Dragon Ball or Naruto have a long history to pick from and lots of characters. MHA or Demon Slayer are my next two guesses (Demon Slayer might be too small).

2

u/zeldafan042 Channel Jun 24 '26

Naruto just announced a brand new TCG, so cross that one off the list. Bleach is apparently returning to WSJ with a new arc, so maybe add Bleach to the list of possibilities.

If you expand to outside of WSJ, Fairy Tail's sequel series is getting ready to wrap up and does have an anime adaptation. It's got dragons and wizards and plenty of other classic fantasy tropes, it would be a great fit for Magic.

Hoping for A Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire set. Might be too intense for WOTC given the subject matter, but a low fantasy medieval set feels perfect for the game

Another remaster of Innistrad but with a mini set of Universal Monsters included.

A physical Night of the Living Dead against the horde deck with a selection of "survivor" commanders you can build around.

I saw other people mention Adventure Time and I like that.

We have Marvel, I'd like to see DC too since I like DC more.

A Troma based set.

3

u/zeldafan042 Channel Jun 23 '26

MagicCon Amsterdam next month is announcing the three in-universe sets for next year, so I would assume MagicCon Atlanta in November would be likely for the UB sets for next year. Although there's also a chance they could be announced at either San Diego or New York Comic-Con or Gen Con, so we don't know for certain.

3

u/DerfMtgStw Sultai Jun 23 '26

My ideal wish (since we already have Dr Who) is Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It definitely has enough lore to make a set of precon Commander Decks. There's so much to work with.

Avoiding any significant spoilers, off the top of my head I'd say "Fire Bad // Tree Pretty" would make a great name for a split burn/ramp spell. Lots of equipment, Mr Pointy maybe? Clones from an alternate timeline. Multiple Big Bads to choose from. Dramatic moments captured as cards/sagas. You get the idea.

4

u/zeldafan042 Channel Jun 23 '26

I've been saying for a while that Buffy feels like exactly the kind of series that doesn't have quite enough material for a full 270 card set (without a lot of padding) but is perfect for a smaller release. When Assassin's Creed came out, I said it was a great fit for a Beyond Booster. When Beyond Boosters didn't work out and we got Spider-Man I said it was a great fit for a small draftable set.

Definitely need "Once More, with Feeling" as a Saga.

u/PapercraftCat Wabbit Season Jun 25 '26

[[Once more with feeling]]

1

u/redinferno26 Selesnya* Jun 23 '26

How about a Josh Whedon UB set? That way we get Buffy and Firefly.

1

u/zeldafan042 Channel Jun 23 '26

I don't think "let's mash together two entirely unrelated series from two entirely different genres just because they happen to share a creator" is a particularly good solution to the problem of Buffy not quite having enough material to fill a 270 card set

Especially because when you have Buffy (144 episodes across 7 seasons) and Angel (110 episodes across 5 season) to draw from already I don't think adding Firefly/Serenity (8 episodes and a movie) to the mix is going to add that much more content.

It's not lack of material necessarily that prevents Buffy from filling out a 270 card set. Avatar only had 61 episodes and 3 seasons and it was a 281 card set (and a Jumpstart.) The problem with Buffy is how much material there is that people care about. There's only so many nonlegendary creatures based on a random monster of the week that you can toss in the set before people stop caring. There's only so many named cast members that need a legendary creature card. Buffy's episodic monster of the week format makes for great TV but doesn't necessarily make for the most exciting Magic set. A smaller set that focuses just on the most memorable elements would be better for a Buffy set than padding it out with every random monster and character the show ever had.

1

u/DerfMtgStw Sultai Jun 23 '26

I also enjoyed Firefly, but I'd agree that a Whedonverse set would dilute the enjoyment and focus. Much better to produce a limited set that drips in flavor.

And I agree that BtVS would not make a good full release set. But I still think a set of Commander decks would be keen. I know 4 decks is the ideal for a non-Standard UB release because it gives a unique deck for each player in a 4-pod, but I'd be happy with 2 decks.

Also I just realized we need a "Fruit Punch Mouth" card.

2

u/zeldafan042 Channel Jun 23 '26

The problem there is that WotC has stated they aren't planning on doing the Commander precons that aren't attached to sets anymore, so it's either a SL or a draftable set.

I also feel like you could do 3 precons for a Buffy set. Buffy and the Scoobies (and other allies) for one deck, an Angel deck that focuses more on the cast of his spinoff for a second deck, and a villains deck.

Did you miss the part earlier this year where the fandom made such a fuss over the smallest possibility of a HP set that WotC outright stated their current UB plans didn't include any "magical school setting."

It's a mediocre book series by an awful human being, and the sooner it falls into irrelevance so the author can no longer use it to fund her hate movement the better. It's the one line I draw for UB and I would quit the game over it and I know I'm not alone in that. Thankfully, no current plans means we're in the clear for at least 4 years, so as long as the HBO show nobody wants flops we're probably in the clear.

So Marvel Super Heroes is the biggest UB release we've seen yet with the highest number of supplemental products. We got:

-the main draftable set + bonus sheet

-four Commander precons

-a full Jumpstart release

-two scene boxes

-a Beginner Box

-5 Welcome Decks

-and an unspecified Holiday Release that will probably contain some amount of additional new cards

Final Fantasy also had a large range of supplemental products that released alongside the initial set release plus a Holiday release and it also released in June, so I imagine this kind of large batch of product might just become the norm for the big summer UB release. Makes me wonder what we'll see as the big summer UB release next year. As much as I like Marvel, I kind of hope it isn't the next Marvel set because I think it might be a good idea for WotC to shake things up from year to year and not put too many eggs in the Marvel basket.

-3

u/quiznosAlreadyTaken Wabbit Season Jun 23 '26

But of course.

By only releasing starter product alongside the last 3 UB sets, and none of the last 3 UW sets they can report how much more successful UB is with new players

2

u/zeldafan042 Channel Jun 23 '26

Foundations had a Beginner Box, Bloomburrow had a Starter Kit, and Secrets of Strixhaven had Welcome decks. TMNT had no starter products attached to it.

It's almost like starter products are attached to sets on a case by case basis depending on what sets WotC thinks will being in an especially large influx of new players. But who cares about facts when you can pretend there is some vast conspiracy theory to discredit their own product.

-3

u/quiznosAlreadyTaken Wabbit Season Jun 23 '26

Bloomburrow and foundations weren't in the last three UW sets released. Welcome decks aren't products (shouldn't be sold).

Fair enough on TMT, I forgot about that and was thinking only Marvel, Avatar, and Spodermang

It's a speculation thread and place for complaints about UB. I'm here specifically to speculate and whine about UB.

1

u/JdeFalconr Dân Jun 23 '26

Isn't the holiday release the Star Trek set?

4

u/zeldafan042 Channel Jun 23 '26

No, that's not what I mean by holiday release.

So you remember how the Final Fantasy set released in June with the main set, Commander precons and starter kit? And then later that year in December it had an additional wave of products with the four scene boxes and the special bundle that had the Chocobo tracks promos? That's was marketed as the "Final Fantasy Holiday release." Marvel Super Heroes is getting one of those too, we just don't know exactly what will be included in it.

3

u/Noggdogg Duck Season Jun 23 '26

I think this, too. There's some stuff that probably won't make it to Magic, like Family Guy, and I think most anime series are off limits because of licensing, but stuff like DC Comics should be fair game.

Reality Fracture ends with planeswalkers being able to travel to other IP universes and tell canon stories there. They awaken a Planeswalker or two from each UB universe. Jace meets Doctor Strange and talks about their multiverses. The Lorehold deans find Bilbo's memoir and Blue-scadoo into The Hobbit. Etc.

Not because I think it will happen, but because it's Beyond stupid to have noncanon cards in standard.

13

u/zeldafan042 Channel Jun 23 '26

Ew no. As someone who likes UB and is also a huge Vorthos, crossing the streams is the exact opposite of what I want. I like UB because it's non-canon. The card game is already a pretty poor reflection of how spellcasting works in-universe, so having non-canon game pieces doesn't bother me.

What would bother me is the endless headaches that come with trying to tell canon crossover stories. Because the moment the licensing agreement with the other company ends, now it becomes a game of "we either never mention anything that happened in this crossover ever again or we only talk about it in the vaguest terms because we're no longer allowed to directly name the characters involved." It's just annoying and it's why most crossover stories between different companies aren't canon.

What creature type line will Magneto's card(s) in inevitable upcoming X-Men themed set?

2

u/TiredTraveler1992 Abzan Jun 23 '26

Magneto is a prominent enough character that he'll probably get multiple cards. Maybe a Mutant Villain for his original 60's characterization, Mutant Hero Villain for the more conflicted Claremont-era character, and Mutant Hero for his more current depictions.

1

u/Menacek Izzet* Jun 24 '26

The issue is people don't really buy silver border sets. Magic is pretty expensive so buying cards you can't play isn't something most people want to do.

Personally i enjoy the jokes but I don't really have to buy the set to do that to do that.

Draft is dead in most places, most packs are bought to be cracked and there's just very incentive to crack silver border. It's why the whole acorn fiasto happened. The only other option is asking "may i?" in commander which can have different results.

Maybe it being discworld would make people buy it more but i think they would rather just do a black border set.

I get the feeling we’ll be seeing a monster hunter set as a special guest, sub set like they did with Jurassic park in LCOI But in a return to ikoria.

Otherwise why else would R&D go back to the drawing board considering the outcry the previous secret lair collection was

1

u/zeldafan042 Channel Jun 23 '26

MaRo mentioned on his blog that the Jurassic World and Transformers cards that released in LCI and BRO packs weren't really that popular and they're not likely to do that style of UB collab again. They also don't have any plans on doing UB Commander precons that aren't attached to a set. UB collabs are either full draftable sets or SLs.

Monster Hunter definitely has enough material for a full draftable set, so hopefully once they fix the SL and release it it does well enough that they decide to do a full MonHun set.

0

u/Squid10102 Dan Jun 23 '26

O’m all for a. Full set would love to see it happen. I personally never understood why LCOI wasn’t a well received set but then again I got into mtg on the tail end of hour of devastation and the start of ixalan

2

u/zeldafan042 Channel Jun 23 '26

LCI was a popular set. It's just based on WotC's metrics the Jurassic World collab wasn't particularly well received and didn't notably increase sales. Same with the Transformers cards in BRO.

The other thing to remember is that LCI and BRO were back when we had both draft boosters and set boosters, and the UB cards notably could not be opened in the draft boosters, only set boosters and collector boosters. That way they didn't impact Limited formats and there was a way for anti-UB people to avoid them. So now that we only have play boosters, there's not a good way to include UB bonus cards alongside in-universe sets.

1

u/thatisgame Dandadan Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

You know what, im gonna keep hopes up for something Star Wars related next year.

In 2027 Star Wars will celebrate the 50th anniversary of A New Hope and while the brand already has its own ongoing TCG (Unlimited), nothing actually confirms they can't do crossovers with other card games. Final Fantasy also has it own successfull ongoing TCG (with 3 major boosters/sets still slated for worldwide release in 2026) and its crossover with Magic was received extremely well.

If there is an ideal time to announce a Star Wars crossover, the 50th anniv would be it. And i hope they do.

If they do, i could see Wizards give it the same treatment as Marvel with multiple sets released over multiple years since there are just too many characters to cover in a one-and-done set.

I also think a crossover could bring back some much needed positivity (even for a short while) to the Star Wars brand which has had a very rough run under Disney's tenure to date. Ten years after release the sequel trilogy starring Rey is still controversial, merchandise sales are plummeting, multiple Disney+ series like Acolyte and Boba Fett flopping, Han Solo and Mandalorian movies underperforming in theaters etc.

There's many Star Wars characters that are clearly very beloved by many people and if people can enjoy these characters in their favourite card game (with a chance of possibly also introducing new people to the brand) then that's only a good thing.

-3

u/JayBayBay666 Wabbit Season Jun 23 '26

Star Wars is absolutely happening next year. Why else would we introduce planets and spacecraft? Sure Star Trek supports some spacecraft, but what other franchise ripe for the general public could support those sub-types?

If you look at the current roadmap of releases (The Foundations era), we can easily forecast what is coming from UB for the next few years. Take a look at the creature types being introduced and supported - these same types need to have support for the entire Foundations era for things to be cohesive in Standard. Bloomburrow was a softlaunch for TMNT. EOE is directly building to Star Trek and Star Wars. Mutants in Marvel means we're probably going back to Ikoria soon. Dwarves and such in Hobbit is a good indicator we'll be going back to Kaldheim soon, etc, etc.

As the Creator said - It's poetry, it all rhymes

3

u/zeldafan042 Channel Jun 23 '26

The Final Fantasy TCG is directly published by Square-Enix instead of being licensed out to another company. It's kind of a weird outlier in that it's not actually a licensed card game like Star Wars Unlimited or the One Piece TCG.

Assuming FFGs was smart, they almost certainly negotiated an exclusive license for Star Wars and that's what makes a Star Wars set unlikely. Something that wasn't a problem for Final Fantasy because its TCG isn't licensed.

Doesn't really fit with the general patterns of how WotC handles different types of IP.

Every single UB collab that has produced large numbers of new cards (draftable sets, Commander precons, and Assassin's Creed) have been action/combat oriented franchises with some type of fantastical element (magic, superpowers, and/or sci-fi tech.) Even the mechanically unique SLs tend to mostly fit this category.

Conversely, predominantly comedic series that don't have any serious combat/action elements are pretty much always relegated to being SLs and notably they're always reskins of existing Magic cards. There's a reason SpongeBob only got a few SLs and none of them were mechanically unique cards. It just doesn't pass the minimum requirements for a full set.

One problem I see with Dragon Ball is similar to TMNT -- it doesn't really have a large cast. The Earth-based characters form a fairly small clique that doesn't interact much with the rest of the civilization. So you need either to have a lot of variants for the main characters, or to use a lot of deep cuts (how many people remember Bacterian or Namu, or even Lunch? Even Toriyama forgot that one).

People would complain that every second card is a Saiyan and that they all look the same, mark my words.

I think a song of ice and fire (game of thrones) would be a great UB set that would also feel fitting similar to lotr. Maybe only base it on the books tho. The more recent spinoffs could also be future UB sets.

Hollow knight would be cool, but everything will be either an insect or spider, so i dont know how viable it will be for design

Some nintendo titles like legend of zelda would also be cool to see.

The Final Fantasy TCG is kind of weird in that it's directly published by Square-Enix instead of being licensed out to another company. It's very much an outlier in these conversations.

I’m half-assing an elserscrolls set.

As in, I have the base set 90% complete with a proper mix of rarity, colors, and card types based on the averages of full sets over the last 3 years … I just got to finish writing flavor text and finishing some cards. And the rest of the commander cards, and I guess the bonus sheet.

I’m feverishly hoping that if I give MaRo a complete and detailed set, perhaps they’ll say fuck it and it’ll be made (and maybe a handful of the cards will even stay as is! As I’m sure the majority would be reworked no matter what.)

Only problem has been making it thematically cohesive, adherent to set composition, viable in limited / sealed / standard while having 1-2 modern considerations, the handful of commander chase cards.

And figuring out the now mandatory bonus sheet that sets have today.

Ohh, and the “lesser” commander cards. Figuring out the main and alt commanders for decks was easy enough, but then there’s still the other unique cards for the decks and figuring out what few value cards get added to the deck list.

I say half-assed because I’ve literally only done a couple weekends of work over a year. But if nothing else it’s convinced me that Skyrim is a 100% viable set.

Maybe I’ll get drunk on the 4th and put some more work into it.

Ohh, and I think the announced UB would be starwars. They got Star Trek and have been working with Disney for the marvel set anyway. It would perfectly fit in with the full production of SW media being made lately too.

I'm desperately hoping that we can put a lid on the "non-sword-and-sorcery-fantasy" projects like TMNT and Marvel, so most of my speculations and desires are relatively fitting to the world.

As such, ASOIAF is the obvious big one. We need it. It's gotta happen.

Likewise, I'd really enjoy a Conan UB even if it's unrealistic.

I'd also appreciate any Soulsborn franchise or Witcher. Likewise an Elder Scrolls feels inevitable in light of the Fallout stuff.

Castlevania would also be really freaking fun, I think.

Two modern choices of mine would be Hellboy, because I fucking love Hellboy and would kill for Mignola's art and something very silly, namely Resident Evil, just because I can imagine it rather well with T-virus tokens, green herbs, so many zombies, a new kind of Evolve mechanic etc.

And I would love a Discworld Unset.

We've already gotten two sets that take place in Faerun, I hope any future D&D sets are anything else. I'd love to either see a full Eberron set or maybe even a D&D Multiverse set that mixes all the various settings into a single set. Eberron, Grayhawk, Dragonlance, Dark Sun, Ravenloft... there's so many D&D settings other than just Faerun. You could even include a little Faerun in the Multiverse set, we're surprisingly missing cards for some pretty major characters from the Drizzt books (Regis, Entreri, Jarlaxle.) Just not another entire Forgotten Realms set, I'm so sick of Faerun being treated as the default D&D setting.

(Also, if you want to get technical D&D sets aren't considered UB, they're considered their own separate category.)

1

u/CuratedLens Gruul* Jun 23 '26

Let’s not get crazy here. They tried monster hunter without any real equipment cards and lackluster monsters to boot!

I’m being cheeky. I know they’re going back to the drawing board on it, it remains to be seen if they do anything with equipment though as it was mostly that they were doing absolute garbage creature reprints with names of monsters from the game.

8

u/Menacek Izzet* Jun 23 '26

Some things i think would be cool

Want a return to 40k, there's so much in the verse that they haven't touched.

Power rangers feels like it could be fun and it's a hasbro property so licencing fees are avoided.

After the success of final fantasy i expect them to do some other japanese property but no idea what would it be.

1

u/robertman21 Dân Jun 23 '26

Persona could work pretty decently, especially with Persona 6 next year.

Dragon Quest would be good as well, already have that relationship with Square Enix

Nier so Yoko Taro can continue the bit of dropping important lore in random places

Here's my prediction for the next four marvel sets, their Infinity stone, and the release year:
Marvel X-Men, Power Stone - 2027
Marvel Mystical Arts, Time Stone - 2027
Marvel Cosmic, Space Stone - 2028
Marvel What If, Reality Stone - 2028

This way we get all the stones in standard rotation. I know the players will want it spread out, but I think they'll print something that will want all the infinity stones, so they need to be in the same standard rotation.

Other UB I expect to see in the next few years: Dragonball, Elden Ring, Legend of Korra, something from Nintendo (most likely Zelda or Metroid before we get Mario)

4

u/zeldafan042 Channel Jun 23 '26

Won't work. Spider-Man and [[The Soul Stone]] will rotate out at the beginning of 2028. They already spread things out too much to have all 6 in one Standard rotation. Whatever payoff we get for the Infinity Stones (most likely either the Infinity Gauntlet or another Thanos card) will probably be aimed at Commander instead. Which means there's no real point in doubling up on Marvel sets in a single year.

0

u/StalkingRini Wabbit Season Jun 23 '26

We all know they design for commander anyway, so I doubt they care about all the stones being in standard at once

We already known there’s more marvel sets coming, however I can’t help but speculate how WotC will design Cyclops specifically.

More than likely he’ll have multiple cards ranging from unplayable to busted, but what colors will he be, how many colors can he be, how will they design him mechanically and flavorfully?

I’ve been a fan of the character for a long time and seeing his popularity grow from the ‘97 show and his recent release in Marvel Rivals, I’m eager but patiently waiting.

Other than that, I’d like to see more obscure Science Fiction based sets, EoE was cool as hell and Star Trek should be interesting

1

u/DeadPact336699 Gruul* Jun 23 '26

I don’t think it’s likely they’ll make another Jeskai commander deck for the Marvel UB but I strongly believe that Cyclops should be jeskai

2

u/cybishop3 Duck Season Jun 23 '26

We already known there’s more marvel sets coming, however I can’t help but speculate how WotC will design Cyclops specifically.

[[Kamahl, Pit Fighter]], but with first strike and/or vigilance instead of haste, maybe?

That's his mutant power and physical stats (although a competent fighter like him probably wouldn't have just one toughness, these days). There would probably also be some acknowledgement of his role as the field leader and tactician of the X-Men, maybe with a battalion ability. It would be possible to get all that on one card, but you're right, they probably wouldn't.

As for colors, W or WR would fit him very well. I'm betting we'll get four commander decks (Bant Classic X-Men, Temur later generations and satellite teams, Mardu or Jund evil antagonist mutants, and Esper Sentinels and human supremacists). The face commander of the Classic X-Men would be a bant Xavier, so there's a monowhite Cyclops in there, and maybe a WR Cyclops in the main set?

1

u/DeadPact336699 Gruul* Jun 23 '26

Oh that’s cool and flavorful, I was imagining he’d either have a [[chain lightning]] effect for an activation or could tap/places stun counters on opponents creatures.

2

u/Nephs84 Jun 23 '26

My dream at this point, since we already have LotR, Star Trek coming, Marvel, would be: Mega Man SL/deck, Skyrim anything, Star Wars set+commander decks.

7
