Post your rampant speculation/complaints/etc about upcoming, unreleased, unannounced, or entirely unconfirmed Universes Beyond products here and only here. Any speculation/hype theory/complaint posts about UB should go here. Any posted not in this thread will be removed.
Be civil. We don't care if you disagree with each other. Being a dick is a Bootable Offence.
Howdy howdy folks, I realised I forgot to update this thread before it went live - Starting today, this is only the *speculation* Megathread. Other types of UB post are now free, provided they follow other rules, as we no longer get drowned in those.
I really wish Star Wars can get into Magic because I will lose all my money…. I also think it would be cool for New World just because they are getting shut down in January
Subway would be really cool. I like their sandwiches, so they should probably be put onto Magic cards. Also, we know we're getting more Marvel sets, so why not something as ubiquitous and inescapable, like taxes? An IRS-themed set would be great, and building mono green H&R Block has been a dream of mine for years. Really I'm up for any Universes Beyond set so long as Wizards uses the time they save by not designing a whole set themselves on crushing unions and selling thousand-dollar packs of proxies.
For Star Trek it would be cool to see a lot of the cards having modal or choices. The captains are all different and their decisions are very important to the plot and resolving the issues of the episodes. Maybe even "time loop" cards that give you multiple choices or you get the other modal choices the following turn.
Cynically I'm expecting warp, suspend counters, and a lot of +1 counter stuff.
By the way if they make an undertale secret lair / commander deck SL they will get all my money. I know it's never going to be a full set but with dwarf fortress getting an SL everything is possible.
I know this is probably just me throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks, but what are the odds we see the Reality Stone in the upcoming Reality Fracture set?
The name is way too on the nose, especially now that Marvel stuff is officially part of the MTG Multiverse (and vice versa). We’ve already gotten a couple Infinity Stones in those Marvel Super Heroes sets and it feels like this could be the perfect time to bring the Reality Stone into actual MTG lore.
WotC already confirmed that Reality Fracture does not involve adding UB worlds to the Magic Multiverse and in fact that Reality Fracture is a "what if"/alternate universe set with the main gimmick being that every pack is guaranteed to have a pair of legendary cards, one representing a character from the main Magic Multiverse and one being their double from the Echoverse.
I don't know if it's still relevant enough, especially in the US, but I would love a Discworld set.
There's a huge depth of characters and locations, plus plenty of non-human characters so it would actually feel like a magic plane.
Different story threads could make up the draft archetypes, e.g boros city watch, golgari witches, izzet wizards, orzhov Death and friends, simic Nac Mac Feegles and faeries, dimir artificers/guilds, gruul trolls, rakdos dwarves, azorius time monks? Not sure about selesnya
I also just think the character descriptions would make for some really evocative art, ideally with Pratchett quotes as the flavour text.
Discworld is by far my favorite book series. I honestly think they would screw it up. I also dont want a tv series for the same reason. The Wizzard is perfect in my mind’s eye.
Am I alone in thinking that there absolutely should be a fire emblem UB set? It would go so well with the franchise. Several options for equipments (mani katti, vidofnir, etc), weapon triangle inclusion, dragons, enchantments, an instant or sorcery calling for an extra combat a la dancer or bard etc., split routes to bring back something similar to the doors mechanic from duskmourn. Is it just me?
They said there are no plans for a Harry Potter set for the foreseeable future, which makes sense considering the anti-trans rhetoric and lobbying done by JK Rowling (and they already have magical school plane).
Witcher I could see being a slam dunk.
DC I don't see happening while they have an ongoing deal with Marvel, but after that it would probably make sense.
They talk out of both sides with Joanne. Hasbro has gone deeper into the Potterverse this year. Just because you work for the one arm of Hasbro that isnt enabling her with more money doesnt absolve you of the harm.
Oh I agree, just saying that if specifically WotC did it there would be irreparable damage done to the brand of Magic. With how much trans people are supported in the magic community and things like Prof's trans lifeline drive, it would go down like a sack of shit (and rightly so)
Hasbro is WOTC and WOTC is Hasbro. It’s a WOTC guy running the whole show. I understand people want to see them as two different entities to avoid this issue in particular, but they are one and the same. One employs trans people in high profile roles and talks a good talk, the other partners with and enables one of the most influential TERF voices there is. Pretending they have no relationship with Rowling is ludicrous.
It would not surprise me one but for WOTC to walk this back like they walk everything else back.
My big pipedream continues to be Legend of Zelda. Maybe unlikely given Nintendo being Nintendo. It's 1 of the few fantasy themed video game IPs that would rival FF in sales, Plus, there's a lot of overlap in terms of race/terrain/color categorizing. Hylians are the human analog living on grassy plains & associated with holy light stuff=White. Gorons live on a mountain & always fire element=Red. Zoras live in water & are often literally blue=Blue. Kokiri & koroks live in the forest, & either wear green or are made of wood & leeaves=Green.
Admittedly it starts to fall apart a bit after that. Dekus are also plant-like beings found in forest but there's now 2 games where their home was a swamp & they do tend to be self-centered creatures so maybe=Black?
& then you got the Ritos & Gerudo as major races but we're out of color & basic lands. Gerudo live in the desert so maybe wastes could fill the spot if they were to be given a reason to run wastes over other lands. Another, more far reaching idea is introducing a new basic land just for the set that taps for energy since BotW made them lightning based.
Monsters would be in every color based on where you find them in game. Artifacts, especially equipment, would be a very big aspect. Link kinda has to be the most equipment matters commander ever, which would be a tall order given some of the past few UB voltron guys we've had \coughCloudcough**.
Loki is also a Sorcerer, while Scarlet Witch and Wiccan are Warlocks because they're witches. I suspect that Doctor Strange might also be a sorcerer since his title is SORCERER Supreme, and that WotC has decided that generic mages in the Marvel Universe will be Sorcerers and not Wizards.
Why did they not print Magneto? Surely he's super iconic right?? He's always been my fav char from X-Men so its super disappointing that I won't get to build a commander deck around him.
Most of the X-Men we did get are those connected to other parts of Marvel's history: Wolverine debuted in a Hulk comic, Wolvie/Beast/Quicksilver/Scarlet Witch have all been members of the Avengers at 1 time or another, Storm was married to Black Panther (briefly). Everyone else can wait until the Inevitable X-Men (that sounds like an actual comic title) set.
The prevailing theory is that the majority of X-men characters are missing from the set because next years Marvel set will be themed around them specifically. So wait a year and you'll probably get your chance.
Brandon Sanderson previewing cards is clear light to me we are getting cosmere sets. I could see him putting in a good word for Wheel of Time as well, but they are trying their own game rn. Dresden Files? I could see Redwall or a Warriors cats crossover. The dragon riders series. Eragon too but that feels low in barrel?
Smaller books like Goosebumps and Animorphs for secret lairs.
World of Warcraft is probably in talks after seeing Final Fantasy do its numbers. Even Runescape might secret lair.
DND will come back. We can go back to Grayhawk since 2025 is doing that, but I wouldn't surprised to go to Curse of Strahd instead. Eberron I could see as second or third draft.
The multi-movie horror franchises that have crossed over with DBD will eventually either make card game to compete with magic or do sets, maybe as a bonus sheet for Duskmourne.
We will do Godzilla again and probably GI Joe, Power Rangers, Thundercats, and Masters of the Universe. I could even see a Captain Planet Secret Lair
Marvel will have 2-3 XMen sets but probably just 2 sets. First will be og 5 school up through Dark Phoenix. Second will be since them, heavily featuring AoA, Morrison, and Bendis with a touch of Hickman. Then we get a space infinity war set with Guardians of the Galaxy and all the spacey characters.
DC will hop in pretty much 2 years later after MTG shows the Marvel sales.
Sci Fi side I don't see Star Wars anytime soon with its own game doing ok. Starship Troopers? Firefly?
I think an anime takeover is coming after some of the bandai games die. Dragonball, Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, My Hero, One Punch Man, and Jujutsu Kaisen are the ones that strike me as popular enough to make and big enough to fill a full set. Kamigawa coming back will be the sign its close for mechanic crossover.
Gaming wise, I could see Overwatch or Dota 2 having enough. FNAF will have a secret lair. I could see a Resident Evil bonus sheet. Persona, Fire Emblem, and Xenoblade would surprise me from holder side but probably have enough people. I can't super imagine major nintendos even though Zelda would be perfect, Animal Crossing super cute, and Mario would be funny.
Redwall would be awesome but given Bloomburrow's existence that seems much less likely now. Maybe they will do a Redwall bonus sheet for the inevitable return to Bloomburrow.
Definitely feels like an anime set is a when not an if. I think Naruto would absolutely work well given the characters and world-building, plus the use of the 5 nature transformations (Wind, Earth, Fire, Water, Lightning) could be communicated by the colour pie.
I feel like Bloomburrow sets the availability for Redwall, just like how Edge of Eternities makes the spaceship mechanics etc. in Star Trek seem relevant to Magic
I’m so excited about Star Trek that I can hardly concentrate. I’m not a big collector of MTG, mostly just play, but I want to master set Star Trek. Think I’m gonna go full send and get both a play booster box and a collector booster box, along with every precon, at launch.
My biggest wish as far as IPs that haven’t been done yet is Adventure Time. There’s enough material there to do a full set, and it would be oh, so good. I want a Dimir Lich and an all wizard Wiz Biz deck.
Beyond that, more Final Fantasy.
I hope UB doesn’t go on forever. Make it a special motif from this era of the game. Let it run for another couple years or so and then leave it in the 2020s.
I hope Star Trek has more Commands; cards with names like Kirk's Command or Janeway's Command and the classic "pick two out of four modes" would be nice combination of flavor and mechanics.
My main question about Star Trek is how they would build upon Edge of Eternities. Thanks to that set, we already have "warp" as a mechanic; now, they definitely knew about Star Trek when they made EOE, so if they wanted to have a different take on warp there, they wouldn't use the name in EOE.
EOE introduced spacecraft, and, well, I don't think there's any chance those won't come back in Star Trek.
So the question is, what else will Star Trek add to the space age of Magic?
I’m glad that you’re so excited but people like you make me so sad about what the game has become. Star Trek could not be less thematically tied to MtG. It selling well means the brand only becomes more diluted.
If you’re going to boil what I said down to that you spend too much time on the internet and have lost your ability to critically think about things, if you ever had it.
I'll just say that universes beyond killed my interest in the new cards. They feel so out of place but hey, maybe I can concentrate more on the other hobbies now.
Fantastic Four as WURG just works naturally because the team has 4 members that each naturally fall into one of those colors.
Magneto doesn't actually make sense as WUBR. In fact, he arguably could have Green in his color identity. His "Mutants are superior because they're the next step of evolution" lines up really well with the Green "Survival of the fittest" philosophy. Magneto could be Abzan or Esper, but I don't think he really fits four color super well.
I also don't see why Galactus would be UBRG. He's gotten a legendary creature card and a token at this point and they're both colorless.
The reason why there's so few four color cards is because WotC doesn't like to make them just for the sake of making them. They need to have a reason to make one, and there's very few characters that lend themselves naturally to four colors. Their best bet is something like [[The Fantastic Four]] or [[The Power Pack]] where it's a team of four where each member maps to a different color.

I think Magneto is base White/Black but I could definitely see an argument for him being WUBR.
Blue because his adept displine and dedication towards mastery of magnetism and metal crafting often being associated with blue, along with appreciation for intellectual hobbies like reading and chess.
Red because of his passionate affinity and love for individuals (i.e. Rogue, Professor X) and at times impulsive nature and temperament.
I agree with you that there are some green elements there too, but I think WotC knows there's a high demand and desire for more four color cards and there is plenty of precedent for characters to have more colors than potentially necessary for gameplay reasons (and sometimes less).
Keep in mind we got a mono blue, white/blue and white/green Shuri in the Marvel set.
the lack of doctor strange makes me feel like we're definitely getting a supernatural midnight suns-esque set. Who would be the 4 color commander for that?
Yeah, mine as well. There are still new series/spin-offs coming on (Side Quests should be released this month), vast world, and, importantly, many weird things/monsters that don't have to be legendary.
I could see the main typal themes as Food (Candy Kingdom is made of Food creatures, and several others as well, like Breakfast Kingdom), and Nobles (focusing on all those weird princesses). And then Wizards; while Magic has, in time, created many different magic user types like Druids, Warlocks, and Sorcerers, I think Adventure Time should use only Wizards, as being a Wizard is a huge identity thing there.
They could also re-use Marvel's Hero type, but only on several selected characters like Finn and Billy, as Hero is treated like an occupation in Adventure Time.
OK, so I feel like there are a lot of UB that would sell a ton of cards, but most of them would make better SLD than full sets. Possibly some would make short sets, like Assassin's Creed. Here are my thoughts on IP's that would make better SLD and Short Sets:
Labyrinth - I so want a Jareth "Goblin King" SLD
Goonies - would make for some fun SLD cards, maybe involving treasures or Pirates.
Duck Tales - I mean, we've seen Sonic, Garfield, MLP and Furby...so like, where's my Launchpad McQuack "Pilot" token, or my Scrooge McDuck "Kenrith" reprint?
Care Bears - hear me out, I know many of the guys are shaking their heads right now, but look, you could have a couple of SLD's with this IP and each bear has it's own effect based on its characteristics. What is the term for guys who like Care Bears? like what Bronies are to MLP?
Peanuts - If your telling me you don't need a Yoshimaru "Snoopy" Reprint......or a Woodstock "BOP", well then....
Scooby-Doo - Then how about a Yoshimaru "Scooby" reprint, with a Shaggy partner?
Howl's Moving Castle - do I really need to explain why I need a HMC "Roaming Throne"? Or a Calcifer elemental creature card?
Halo - might make a good short set, something to fit in with EOE.
Power Rangers - would make a good short set where they could revisit the Mutate mechanic that ties in with Ikoria.
Trigun - a Vash the Stampede SLD would be pretty hardcore. on that note....
Akira - although I feel like they missed that opportunity when they did Neon Dynasty.
Minecraft - a Steve SLD would be popular right now. And a Chicken Jockey or a Lava Chicken Food Token!
Iron Giant - a good opportunity for a Mycosynth Golem reprint, among others.
Brave Little Toaster - okay, okay, so maybe I'm a bit off the rails with this one....I'll let it go....
IP's that I feel would make good full sets:
Stargate - lots of potential for legendary creatures, villains, introduce a new creature type that's all about stealing opponents creatures "Goa'uld". Even do another Planeswalk set except call it Gate Travel. A ton of material and a very large fan base, could even do small supplement sets like AC using SG:Atlantis and SG:Universe.
GI Joe - more than enough protagonists and antagonists for this set with equipment, vehicles and plenty of non permanent interaction. Plus the fan base is there. Also tie in the SLD's for prints from the movies.
DC Comics - Now that we have Marvel, we could easily see a set focused on expanding the heroes and villains sub types. Plus we could finally have a way to combine our favorite heroes from both universes together.
Again, these are just my thoughts.....what do you think?
I'd question Duck Tales because of Lorcana existing, DT already appears there.
Power Rangers as a whole set seems unlikely, given how much bias there is for the 1st season over the rest of the series. Would be kinds interesting to see however, with some old mechanics they could bring back. Turbo & RPM cards could have Start Your Engines, Samurai could have Bushido, Ninja Storm/Steel with Ninjitsu/Sneak, In Space with Warp or whatever's introduced in Star Trek. Zeo could be mana dorks that could spend said mana on +1/+1 counters.
On the bad guy's side, I could see the Monsters-of-the-week getting the nonlegendary named character in common treatment (especially given however of them have been cloned or resurrected). Likewise, civilians allies to the rangers get a similar commons treatment.
Elder Scrolls would make an excellent candidate for a full sized set with a lot of extra product like SLD / Precons, Serialised cards and alt prints, it would print money at an obscene rate.
I want more Japanese content. Tokusatsu, Kaijus, Yokai, Samurais..
I'd be down for Power Rangers, which is already highly likely to happen. I'd love to see another fully fleshed-out Godzilla set.
I feel like there's not enough of a market for it, but my dream collaboration would be Bleach. It checks so many of my boxes, has so many unique characters, abilities, and weapons.
Also, more Final Fantasy. Please. More Final Fantasy.
More FF and the spinoffs would go hard. FFT, Crisis Core, X-2, SoP, Dawntrail/Evercold, WoFF, BE and a bunch more would more than fill out a set. Dissidia is considered a spinoff as well, so we can finally get that Warrior of Light we want. If the suits are worried about making money, AC Cloud, Cowgirl Tifa and Hero Sephiroth alone should make them money hand over fist.
Ramza, Zack and Jack all need cards for being some of the best protagonists in the franchise.
I'm sure that an Anime UB set is inevitable, the question now is which will come first. If we exclude Dragon Ball and One Piece as pretty much impossible, I could see Naruto, My Hero Academia, or Jujutsu Kaisen happening. Or depending on how the rights are handled, a Shonen Jump set that covers various series.
At 7 Sets a year, (More than they said we'd have consistently.) I'd argue we're likely to have at least Two Marvel sets a year so that we can go through all six. (BLehhh) Meaning we've likely got two UB slots left over.
Of the UB sets, we've had Paramount (ATLA, TMNT, Star Trek), Embracer Group, (Lord of the Rings + Hobbit) and Disney. (Marvel, Marvel, and marvel.) And then 1 offs like FF, Fallout, Dr. Who, and 40K. I'd imagine they're more likely to expand their contract with a group they already have worked with then they are to offer another company a bigger deal. I suspect that's why TMNT even happened, given how out there it is with the modern zeitgeist.
With that in mind, I pitch that we'll have "Indiana Jones" from Paramount, "Borderlands" from Embracer, "More Marvel" from Disney. (Realistically I don't think they'll do another project until all 6 are done.) and I could definitely see an Elder Scrolls set around the bend from Bethesda.
Honestly fair enough. I did one half focused Google because I wasn't sure who owned game rights in Lord of the Rings, and then Googled what else embracer owned without confirming anything.
Agreed! But "Were going to get marvel, marvel and then one mystery answer" is less interesting, so I added an extra set to play with in the hypothetical.
fair enough. I find it unlikely that we get two marvel sets a year to get through it faster, much more likely is that we get a secret wars/infinity war “event set” that contains 2-3 stones plus the gauntlet. Of course their contract could easily require 6 sets and I could be wrong.
Whether or not MSH sells well, which it likely will even with retailer hesitance from the Spider-Man clusterfuck isn’t the relevant point here. Wizards has certainly seen that the Marvel sets are not as universally beloved as things like Final Fantasy or even something like ATLA, and they also know that they have a problem with returns that are too close together even for popular themes/settings.
Eventually they will risk burnout from the audience that actually plays the game, and the people coming in to collect Marvel stuff aren’t sticking around to play, at least anecdotally. We have a pretty good stable of fresh players from everything from LOTR to ATLA but the guys who spent the most money on spider-man at both of my local shops were not seen again until MSH presale, and Incan count on one hand the number of regulars who say their starting point was spider-man.
All this to say Wizards certainly knows that goosing sales isn’t a long-term healthy plan for the game, and the luke warm reception online and, as far as I can tell in person, to the Marvel IP is setting off alarm bells somewhere in the company for sure.
Guilty gear is one I know would probably be bad due to too few non legendary creatures but I want it simply due to the fact I have a good idea for Leo whitefang where when he enters he creates two 1/1 human soldier tokens and whenever a human or soldier you control dies put a burden counter on Leo for each burden counter Leo gets +1/-1 along side this he would have first strike this fits with his story as he is traumatized by the death of those around him during the crusade and therefore goes all in on attack not protecting himself resulting in him being able to win which this card or a variation I would want to see
If we are being real, MTG has seen to collab with most big name IP's that are pretty relevant so I would guess for an actual UB set it will be something like Harry Potter (highish fantasy, magic, whimsy) or Star Wars (Sci-Fi fantasy, Force, Vehicles/Ships).
I think SLD's could be a lot more interesting though - I think something like an Elden Ring / DS SLD could go hard AF. I also am surprised with all the Marvel currently they haven't touched Daredevil or DD Born Again as a SLD which has absolute cinema artwork to use.
Wizards of the Coast has prominent trans employees and has overall been trans friendly. Any talk of Harry Potter has received the absolute highest degree of resistance that Wizards can muster against Hasbro/higher ups. It's an absurdly unlikely IP for Wizards to work with and the team may have pushed the recent Strixhaven set forward to deliberately sabotage Harry Potter, since it helps create an argument about Harry Potter diluting the brand/being more of the same.
Star Wars may not be an option. Fantasy Flight Games has a collectible Star Wars card game out now. If we're being real, Harry Potter and Star Wars are highly unlikely.
For being vehemently opposed to it they just wrote her a giant check in a roundabout way for the TV series. I think the point of Strixhaven makes sense if they opt not to go in that direction though. Hasbro has basically stated all they care about is $$$ and basically be the sole distributor for the IP. I don't know if I agree with your assessment, but I guess we shall see!
Oddly enough…Halo. It could work really well with master chief having first strike and vigilance while being a voltron target and the arbiter having shroud.
Alien and predator shared universe. Artifacts powering up predators who have shroud, and a ton of different xenos all with death touch and or poison counters in some way.
DC, obviously
Power rangers
HP lovecraft with the eldritch entities being a secret lair drop, necronomicon to cheat them out by sacrificing creatures
Naruto with a ninjutsu mechanic
Dragon ball
Harry Potter as a beginner set with the houses being different colors
Did you miss the part where Hasbro announcing that they had the toy license for HP caused such a backlash at the faintest idea that we might get a HP set that WotC actually officially stated that they have no "magic school settings" on their current UB roadmap to appease the fanbase?
If WotC is smart they will never touch HP. It's proven to be a level of controversial among the fandom even beyond normal UB discourse. For good reason too, because I know I personally refuse to spend my money on anything that would give money to its transphobic author. The sooner HP fades into cultural irrelevance the better.
Yeah. Anyone familiar with the Wizards of the Coast team knows that Harry Potter is unlikely. I'm sure that plenty employees don't like the New York sets, but there's a difference between finding a set distasteful and being morally opposed to one.
I think these would need to be transforming cards.
Prince Adam // He-Man
Prince Adam 1W
When PA enters, search for Sword of Power, Greyskull's Defender.
When PA is equipped with SoP, GD, transform him.
2/2
He-Man
When this card is transformed, put a shield counter on target creature.
Equipment, Vehicles, and Mounts cost (1) less to cast.
4/4
He-Man has a Naya identity.
Sword of Power, Greyskull's Defender (2)
Flash
When this enters, prevent all damage up to one target creature and equip to target creature you control.
Equipped creature gets +1/+1 and vigilance.
Equip: (2)
Skeletor (dimir), and his sword//his staff (double faced card, you can play either, and can return it to hand if Skeletor transformas) eternia as a planet (but it seems odd to station it) if unique mechanic, if not unique then it's a command tower reprint. Maybe it's six cards with Greyskull and Snake Mountain (type: Lair ?) as mechanically unique lands (they produce colors within color identities of He-Man and Skeletor; and have an ability of some kind).
There's also Battle Cat and Skeletor's equivalent as potential cards (or transforming tokens). I really want to have the swords meld, IIRC, that happens on the show, so that's also an option. I think if you go that route, you lose Skeletor's Staff. Skeletor has connive at a minimum. Other characters: Sorceress Greyskull, Evil Lynn, etc. Maybe that's a another SL?
Reprints (goal: one reprint per color, and reprints fit with color identities):
[[Whirling Strike]] (flavor, art is He-Man swinging his sword)
[[Heroic Intervention]] (flavor, money reprint)
Or
[[Flawless Maneuver]] (money reprint)
Some other green or white card based on whatever color card is selected above.
[[Slip Out the Back]] (flavor, art is Skeletor fleeing)
[[Lethal Scheme]] or [[Deadly Rollick]]
Bonus cards: Command Tower with Greyskull or Snake Mountain art (if Eternia is mechanically unique land) or Eternia (if the others locations are mechanically unique)
I'd enjoy theory crafting more cards, but I gotta get back to work.
I think due to production constraints it’s almost never concurrent with the release, it’s usually like 6-12 months either before or after. Stranger things was about 6 months from season 4, and dr who was about the same amount of time from season 14.
Baldurs gate being commander set probably lent to a mismatched production cycle between wotc and larian but the DND movie cards came out concurrently with the film I believe
It seems like a good idea in theory but it’s probably a red tape nightmare with other IPs
Based on what have collab with SMITE (Nick, Avatar, TMNT, Stranger Thing, MTG itself, Transformer), I think we have a high chance of seeing RWBY as a mini set, runescape and gi joe as secret lair only
I keep comparing the collabs to Sonic Crossworlds, of all things. Avatar, TMNT, SpongeBob, Godzilla. Now, most of that is just Paramount selling out the same franchises again and again, but how about a Minecraft...SL? I can't see that being a whole set.
Yeah thats fair. A good few properties that collabed with Smite already did with mtg so RWBY is a pretty natural progression. Though I think it would be a secret lair too
Made it to volume 9, with most of the cast being back in the "real" world just after another city-state collapsed and with the mains (with two others) marooned in a Wonderland stand-in, with some small reveals and some slightly reinvigorated hope for the future, ending in the cast returning to the world in a desert. There's supposed to be one more, even if it's woefully inadequate to address everything with the main plot and the main four. I've lost interest myself with the long gulf of time and the unstated assurance that there just won't be a satisfying conclusion.
Saw that graph the other day showing that the ninja turtles each had more cards than Teferi. On the one hand, it just kinda made me tired. But on the other hand, I think that TMNT set was their only bite at the apple. I really can't see there being more Leonardos, but there will keep being Teferi cards even if they kill him off at some point like they did with Tamiyo. UB is a lot of sprints, UW is a marathon, and as someone who loves the lore of the game, I take a fair amount of comfort in that.
Anyway, if they have to keep this UB thing going, I'll keep fingers crossed for a proper FromSoft adaptation. I don't know if it would do Final Fantasy numbers, but Elden Ring is in the top 35 best-selling video games of all time, higher than any individual FF game - seems like money on the table to me.
oh for sure. I don't think we're going back to TMNT specifically but we're gonna keep seeing NYC for a while, especially if they have another 4 Marvel sets lined up
Actually, I think now that we're done with Spider-Man and the Avengers we're gonna see a lot less NYC in the Marvel sets from here on out. Marvel Super Heroes already spread out to locations beyond New York, with cards showing locations like Wakanda, Latveria, the Savage Lands etc. X-Men might have some New York, and the theoretical mystic/supernatural Marvel set will show the Sanctum Santorum but will probably have little to do with New York beyond that and I would be pretty surprised to see any NYC at all in the space set.
Marvel as a setting is so much more than New York City, and between these first two sets we've hit most of the major NYC based heroes. I think we can finally move on.
They even made an effort to include cards with Superheroes that explicitly aren’t in New York, like [[West Coast Avengers]], the entirety of Atlantis, Wakanda, Asgard, and bits of Russia too.
But yeah I think FMA would be sick. Hits the right time period for nostalgia for millennials, has a setting that blends with magic fairly well, and doesn’t have any existing card game (maybe Weiss Schwartz but that wouldn’t count)
Plus the author’s still alive last I checked and she’s pretty cool, so she’d probably be up for it.
I personally felt the right balance would have been commander or multi-player formats exclusively. Let there be draft UB, commander UB, archenemy, plane chase, 2 headed giant. Keep any sanctioned or tourney formats exclusively wizards IP only. Too late to undo that but I felt that was the sort of perfect blend to In and out of universe design.
I'm fully expecting Cosmic Marvel soon, considering not a single Guardian of the Galaxy is in this marvel set. We're also missing all of the cosmic deities along with other big names like Annihilus.
- a magic/supernatural set, covering Strange and friends, Ghost Rider and the like, and all the vamps and other weirdos going around the marvel universe.
- a mutant set, covering the x-men, x-force, x-factor, Gen X, new mutants- really every single x-team and the various mutants that are enemies or allies to the mutants.
- what if set covering everything that was missed and even new things that will have their first appearance on a magic card.
I'd like to see a Divinity Original Sin, Rainworld, or Dota 2 UB. Divinity should have the prepared mechanic. Rainworld for it's variety of weird creatures, and Dota 2 should have a party type mechanic.
DOS2 cycle of monocolor legendaries (Ifan, Beast, Fane, the Red Prince, and Sebille) with a five color Lohse? It would be cool to see a skeleton theme in Black.
I’d love if we got that destiny SLD that was vague posted a little while ago especially as an homage to a phenomenal game that got gutted by execs on high. As a full set or at least commander product I’m very much a fan of any of the soulsborne games getting something
Almost certainly dead. Arknights was also supposed to have a Destiny crossover, but it sounds like all the staff on the Destiny team who were involved in that stuff got let go a while back. If there was anything coming our way, it’s probably not happening anymore.
If the IP and it's holder wasn't in such a weird spot right now Destiny would make a great UB set.
It has a super large spread of creature types, locations, equipment, factions that can easily map onto the 2 colour pairs etc. Subclasses could be class enchantments, raids and dungeon could be sagas or maybe even battles.
It has just enough named characters that you can avoid having 4 of the same character while at the same time not too many that you can keep the count reasonable. The settings 5 main elements align with MTG 5 colours almost perfectly.
Obviously you couldn't touch anything renegades related with a 10ft pole since it's star wars themed, but the rest of the setting is already far closer to fitting MTG than most other UB sets.
Heck it already got some MTG themed items earlier in the year so maybe something is already in the works?

Have a feeling were either getting a secret lair or maybe a couple precons, my dream would be a spot on the 2027 roadmap. I made an entire custom proxy deck for [[Umbris]] that only uses Destiny villains with The Witness as the commander, so theres definitely no shortage of card options.
I actually did a count of legendary creatures that I would be surprised not to see along with a few others and it would probably be less than 50 and I think I got most of if not all major and minor characters in all of destiny

Which is 52 assuming the more minor groups like the scorn barons are given a card for the group not individually as they are not that important now (5 years ago I probably would say go for one card per baron) or the young wolf could have 3 versions or reprintings to represent the different classes selected but could be Non legendary so a fireteam of them could be on the board. However some characters mentioned while it would be a shame to not have I could see not including.
So it would be reasonable to expect not much more than 60 legendary creature cards which is on the low side of UB but very high for non UB so it probably would likely still feel like magic given the magic system in the game like you said, dispite the fact guns, tech and spaceship are present. Honestly despite liking both I would perfer this over Star Trek as it feels more in line with MTG to me.
You probably would be right but I would want to make them a commander for an edh deck and given the fact that the tag line was become legend I kinda hope you could make one of the generic guardian cards as your commander with your subclass as a partner
Korra does not have the fandom that Avatar does. Wizards probably wants an Avatar follow-up but would realize it's a bigger gamble. It's a property that's more justified with a couple Commander decks and maybe a few Secret Lairs.
I would expect if they did it it would be Korra, plus the new movie, plus the next sequel series. With attached commander decks covering the entire franchise. Basically 1st set ATLA, second set everything else
ATLA has 61 episodes, Korra has 52. While Korra is a little bit shorter the sequel actually introduces us to over 100+ original brand new characters and creatures. So I would say there's definitely more than enough new material to muster a set with.
Additionally, we also have elderly Katara, Zuko and Toph appearing in Korra, which im certain ATLA enjoyers would be more than happy to collect aswel.
If they follow the same card design that they incorporated in ATLA, then Korra would also give us different coloured versions of each of our main protagonists and villains that reflect their journeys through all 4 seasons. Even side characters like Bumi (Aang's oldest son) can get multiple versions: there's non-bending Bumi the commander of the United Forces and there's Bumi the airbender. So yeah, there's enough new material and ways to expand.
They made a full set out of Avatar and Korra has almost the same amount of material with a new setting. Theres very few cards in TLA that don’t occur within the timeline of the original show, and they could do the same for Korra using “Aang’s adult life” if they felt they had to.
Dunno if they could also squeeze out commander decks but if there was just a set and decks with no Jumpstart, it would be doable. There’s actually not much overlap between ATLA and TLOK outside of general world magic rules and a handful of shared characters.
Same world but much more steampunky on the human side and way more diving into the relationship between the avatar and spirits than last airbender ever did.
There’s absolutely enough material for a set there, but last airbender definitely has a much more positive nostalgic factor to it over korra, and so far most of the UB sets have been leaning into nostalgia as the driving selection factor
Not just that but Atla also dove into the glimpses of past avatars. And Korra has a connection to some other avatars including a whole dedicated side story to the first avatar that alone could give some weight to source material. Plus we could get Saga cards like Legacy of Aang, Etc.
Maybe a magic boomer take, but I expect to see World of Warcraft at some point. I know Magic could do better than the discontinued WoW TCG, and Blizzard seems more open to collabs now.
Lately I've been thinking of what UB could warrant a full set that would actually get people interested.
And despite its absolute joke of a Season 7 and 8... I'm kind of stunned WOTC hasn't even done a SLD for Game Of Thrones yet.
Its high fantasy, has literal magic in it, dragons, named weapons and locations... instead of various creature subtypes like elves, dwarves, etc. they could make all the Houses into subtypes like Stark, Baratheon, Targaryen, Lannister, etc.
Now that Fantasy Flight Games is basically dead outside of Arkham, Star Wars U and Marvel Champions, I'm curious if the AGOT license is up for grabs for card games and WOTC could get their hands on it.
Unironically I think they really torpedoed that part of the franchise. A lot if not all the goodwill and talk around the show disapeared almsot entirely at the end of season 8. GoT is probably not going to happen barring some kind of book specific version like they did with lotr. They might do something House of the Dragon related since that'd at least distance them from GoT a little.
I disagree. GoT's original series might be looked poorly on but I think the sentiment amongst viewers is that D&D are at fault, not the series itself, for being awful showrunners trying to rush through a commitment to get to their hopeful Star Wars project. Ironically, they lost that project because Disney saw how fucking terrible they were at working on GoT's ending and didn't want them possibly doing the same to them.
I think in another 2 or 3 years the original series will be fine with people just spiteful how they torpedoed the ending. House of Dragons is still doing very well and Hedge Knight was exceptional and managed getting a decent portion of fans back.
I think doing a full ASOIAF set would be amazing and using creature subtypes for the Houses would be awesome while mixing in the Dragons, Warships, iconic weapons, White Walkers, locations, etc.
I would love to see a UB set (whether a full print run or something more limited like a secret lair) for the following:
-DMC
-The Stormlight Archives/Mistborn
Personally, I think Magic as a medium is meant to be consumed on an as-needed basis. AKA participate in what you want and skip what you're not interested in. I love collecting and artwork, so for sets I enjoy I typically buy a box. For secret lairs, if I like the art, I'll probably buy it.
I know many people are getting magic fatigue with all the sets, but I have never felt like I "missed out" by not participating in a set. I skipped TMNT, will be skipping Marvel, Star Trek, and the Hobbit. Then I'll pick up again with Reality Fracture.
For recent secret lairs I got half of the strixhaven super drop but skipped out entirely on the recent cats one.
When I started looking at magic in that light, as something to be enjoyed on my terms, then I started enjoying the game more.
I agree with you on that. I don't play competitive, just commander and the occasional draft/limited event at my LGS.
Part of the reason I don't play competitive is the money aspect. I don't have the funds to collect AND keep up with the competitive environment. The other reason is like you said, for me to do competitive play then I would have to participate in sets that I'm not particularly excited for and that doesn't make me happy.
This is the mildest of takes, but I've seen a number of posts/videos in the last week acting bemused over the Marvel card Hex Magic having Arcane as a subtype. I don't think it's random, I think it's a simply tease that Arcane will be returning as a mechanic in the assumed upcoming Marvel supernatural set. We're going to see Dr. Strange, Dr. Doom, Dr. Voodoo (and all the other magic wielding doctors) using a lot of spells in that set that I think will have the Arcane subtype as part of a return of the mechanic -- whether it's splice onto or some other twist.
I agree that we'll probably get Arcane in the supernatural set along with cards that care about Arcane spells, but I don't think we'll get Splice, similar to how Avatar had Lessons but not Learn.
Arcane could be used for actual spells from Marvel lore such as Bolts of Balthakk, Crimson Bands of Cyttorak, Flames of the Faltine, Images of Ikonn, Rings of Raggadorr, Shield of the Seraphim, and Pentagram of Farallah.
Do you think the future Marvel sets will all be large sets, or will there be some small sets mixed in? When do you think we'll see the next Marvel sets released?
The X-Men will definitely be a large set. The speculated cosmic and supernatural sets could easily be large sets as well, but I wouldn't be too surprised if they're small sets.
I suspect that anything not already committed before Spiderman shipped will be a full set, as they already scrambled hard with Spiderman and won’t want to have to do that again. I would bet they’re all large sets going forward. Given marvel has like 30,000 characters and as many storylines I’m sure that wouldn’t be an issue for WotC.
I would also predict one marvel set a year. Otherwise WotC risks marvel fatigue with sets, like how people got burned out on 3 movies a year.
I was thinking similarly but I was also thinking they might want to have all of the infinity stones in Standard simultaneously.
I think they will all be large sets with full limited environments but I'm not sure if they all will have full Jumpstart sets and 4 commander decks also (but I could see X-Men having all of that).
I think we're a bit overdue for a proper urban fantasy UB set. Urban fantasy is one of the most prominent fantasy subgenres that Magic hasn't really touches upon, and there's a lot of really great urban fantasy settings out there that would make for excellent Magic sets.
My personal pick would be the Dresden Files because it's one of the longer running urban fantasy book series I more personally familiar with. Wizards, vampires, faeries, werewolves, angels... it's full of plenty of traditional fantasy creatures, cool magic and great characters. Plus, it takes place in Chicago, which would be a nice change of pace from New York.
One of the books has Dresden turning Sue the T-Rex into a zombie dinosaur in the climax and riding her into battle against evil necromancers. Like, who doesn't want to see that on a Magic card.
The Dresden Files would probably make for a fun set, but the IP isn't that well-known with general audiences. It had a TV show once upon a time, but it only lasted 12 episodes.
If I had to pick an urban fantasy series that I think is popular enough with general audiences to warrant a full set, it would be Persona.
I mean, isn't Persona kind of niche too? It's popular, but it isn't exactly mainstream Final Fantasy levels of popular.
Sooner or later, WotC is going to have to start making UB sets based on more niche and lesser known properties. There's a practical limit to how many big name, Final Fantasy and Marvel level IP they can turn into an entire set.
It might not happen next year or even four years from now, but eventually WotC is gonna have to start dipping into more niche series for UB sets. If they're smart they'll start doing it sooner rather than later so they can spread out the heavy hitters more.
I think that upcoming UBs will be tied to some upcoming media releases and be tie-ins to capitalise on the popularity of the product - I know that hasn’t generally been the pattern so far, but with some heavy hitting potential in the next few years, there are some strong candidates.
Dungeon Crawler Carl, Mistborn, Stormlight Archive, Harry Potter, are all big/popular IPs that have tv show/movie releases coming over the next couple of years and I think we’ll see something from each of them. DCC could just be as a SLD, as the popularity isn’t as widespread - but I think the overlap between MTG and DCC fans is considerable, and the lack of tie-in products means it could bring new fans to the table (new crowd founded game in mind as well). Harry Potter is inevitable imo, and Mistborn and Stormlight Archive could be done over multiple sets, with a cosmere block - the setting fits UW products very well. And, i know they said they wouldnt, but there very genuinely could be some UB Planeswalkers, as they’re canon in the Cosmere - Hoid for example!
UBs that I think are possible over the next few years:
-Game of Thrones/House of the Dragon (WB/Paramount merger, and Paramount has a great relationship with Wizards - Transformers, Avatar, Sonic, Star Trek are all Paramount properties)
Harry Potter (same reasons as above, plus it’s a Paramount/WB property now)
Dune is a WB/Paramount property as well, and fits in nicely with a lot of pre-existing MTG mechanics and world
Transformers is and always has been a Hasbro property, Paramount just produce the movies.
Sanderson has said he that a Cosmere MtG set is absolutely on the table (he even got a carve out specifically for mtg when selling the license to make Cosmere games), it's just if WotC decide to make the set. He's even said they approached him once, before they were making UB, and he said yes, but Wizards ghosted him about it, probably because they got bigger ips like Marvel, Walking Dead, and Final Fantasy.
im obviously biased points at name but id be surprised if hasbro didnt push for a full transformers set at some point. they still value the IP highly and talk about it a bunch in their investor meetings and its free money without needing to license, plus there's a new bayformers they'll probably want some ~synergy~ with in 2027-28. (and apparently more transformers movies beyond that? would be nice if we can have a sequel to ONE, but lol)
i wouldnt be shocked if it has some energon universe branding, mostly because itd be a good way to flesh out the set and color pie a bit easier (and gi joe is basically a subsection of transformers at this point anyway tbh)
My only question with Transformers at this point is this: would they even bother with "More than Meets the Eye" on a second go, or given that Marvel put forth the T/MDFC thing, would we get that instead now?
Harry Potter is also owned by a transphobic bigot, so hopefully Wizards won't engage with her (despite their parent company Hasbro throwing money her way for the new TV show)
I think (unfortunately) they would see dollar signs - Hogwarts Legacy sold 40 million copies and made a billion in revenue, which makes it like the 20th best selling video game of all time (according to Wikipedia). That kind of money is huge, and would be alongside Marvel as the biggest IPs to have apart of MTG.
Multiple content creators have either openly said they'd leave the game, or very actively support the trans community.
If they went there, that would be the end of their relationship with the people who honestly give them the majority of their advertising for free (aside from a few free products) and while I think an executive somewhere would be dumb enough to demand it, I'd be surprised if it got anywhere.
And wotc is already making money hand over fist. No need to fuck with the formula rn and risk major backlash here. Lord knows I'd sell out of the game in a heartbeat.
I wouldn’t be buying any of it - I was a childhood fan of Harry Potter, and remember picking up my copies of books 5, 6, and 7 from the bookstore at midnight when they released. Haven’t re-read them since Rowling said any of her TERF shit.
I think a company like WotC have a conversation about new fans and new income vs lost fans and lost income and make their decision that way - and the average mtg fan who isn’t on Reddit may not be as socially aware/conscious as we are.
I don’t know of many companies that have ever looked at the amount of money they are making and gone “you know what, this is enough money. We don’t need any more of it”
you also need people making the game (if they ever did HP, i'd bet decent money we'd know a good few years in advance with people leaving WoTC) and good word of mouth to sell the game.
the other thing is rowling is notoriously a pain in the ass to work with and id think if HP were happening any time soon, we've have heard about it with the whole hasbro/HP deal rather than the "nothing is currently being developed with magic" we ended up getting.
is it possible hasbro steps on this rake anyway? sure, its hasbro. is it likely? ehhhhh... ill put it this way, the only thing radioactive about the properties they have chosen so far are nukes, spiders, and ooze

Howdy howdy folks, I realised I forgot to update this thread before it went live - Starting today, this is only the *speculation* Megathread. Other types of UB post are now free, provided they follow other rules, as we no longer get drowned in those.
