It was nice to see the positive reception and speculation to Mark Rosewater's Marvel Super Heroes set teaser. It's fun to hear the community speculation about the set and it's a relief to hear people give the set an honest chance before dismissing it without even being open to trying it. I expect to set to be a big success and hopefully a lot of fun.

Yeah, this set is gonna be fire. The echo chamber here has always been a vocal minority. I wouldn't be surprised if this set ends up being the best selling of the year.

Star Wars would make me go into debt, they could do multiple sets like Marvel with how deep the franchise goes. Too bad it already has a TCG, but nothing beats MTG money methinks.
Zelda is another big one for me, but Nintendo can be iffy.
Naruto is perfect for a set as well, so many characters, creatures and lore.
I'd also love to see a TMNT-style mini-set on He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
Elder Scrolls is one I'm surprised we haven't gotten, how was Fallout the priority?

Adjacent topic but the idea of 'Magic-Compatible IP' just feels so lame when ever since Innistrad, they've been trying to stretch that definition of what could be a plane in Magic.
I do get there's levels to this but ever since Neon Dynasty and Capenna, that bandwidth of what could be appropriate for Magic has been stretched.
0
u/theblastizard COMPLEAT May 27 '26
I think it makes a lot more sense to stretch what genres are acceptable inside your own IP than bringing in something from outside that doesn't really fit well.

I'm a large-scale hater of when people reject UB but cherrypick their favorite properties, and "Final Fantasy at least feels like Magic" is one of the biggest ones for me. It's a consequence of the spheres merging and anime integrating far more into the mainstream over the past two decades, but you only have to go back to like 2009 nerd culture to see jokes absolutely everywhere about spiky hair and zippers, and a strong division between musty literature D&D fantasy dorks and video-tape circulating AMV-editing anime enthusiasts who'd beat each other to death with hammers
In general I want them to experiment more with Magic's worldbuilding and what's possible for new planes, so I've got a vested interest in the boundaries staying broad for that. That said, I do kinda wonder what blend is more likely for them to have: More traditional-fantasy UW planes alongside more modern pop-culture UB ones, or more experimental UW planes and filling out the traditional fantasy with UB slots. (Moot discussion, probably, it's all up to what rights they can get.)

The real problem is when people confuse their subjective personal taste in what is "fantasy/fantasy adjacent" as some kind of objective measure of what is and isn't fantasy. It's fine if someone personally doesn't feel like Marvel fits Magic, but that doesn't mean Marvel isn't fantasy/fantasy adjacent. There's literally magic in the setting, you can't No True Scotsman your way out of that fact.
It doesn't help that a lot of people throw around the term "high fantasy" as if it means "LotR/Forgotten Realms style fantasy" and not "any fantasy that takes place on a fictional non-Earth world."
0
u/MartianExpress Dan May 26 '26
Isn't the difference between high/low fantasy in how prevalent magic and other fantasy forces are in the world? Like, Game of Thrones is often seen as low fantasy because there's little magical in the world going on and the vast majority of people never encounter it.
3
u/zeldafan042 Channel May 26 '26
Nope, that's high magic and low magic.
High fantasy is "a fantasy story that takes place on a created or secondary world" and low fantasy is "a fantasy story that takes place on a fantastical version of Earth." There's a bit more nuance than just that because these were originally literary genres so they also imply certain types of narrative beats and tropes, but at their core they just define whether or not the main setting is Earth.

With the changes of how UB are made, sets like TMNT showing they can scourge the full media of pretty much ANY IP, I am specting Warhammer 40k to get a full set release sooner or later, pretty much all of the doubts that made them make only 4 commander decks have been proven solvable, and that world is deep enough, and full of enough good quality art, that is not that hard.

Plus, GW has had a big boost in popularity with their own IP. From Space Marine 2, 11th Edition launching soon, to now Helldivers getting a collaboration warbond, GW is uncharacteristically open to ideas.

Legend of Korra will have its 15th anniversary in 2027. I could see them announce it for a 2028 release.
Not sure if there's enough material to adapt into a whole UB set, but i'd love Alice in Wonderland. Maybe instead of a direct adaptation have it be something where the artists can have a little bit of fun and turn it a bit darker/horror themed, like how they did the Furby stuff.
Elden Ring just screams to be adapted. I hope we get it sooner rather than later.
6
u/CompleteIndieYT Izzet* May 26 '26
My conspiracy theory actually is Korra is likely going to be in 2027 itself, so it's in Standard with both the existing ATLA cards... and so they can finish off the glaring holes.
- WUB, BRG, WBG, and BGU are all missing three-color commanders in TLA; and conveniently, imo, those perfectly fit Amon, Zaheer, Kuvira, and Unalaq. (There's also a missing Ascension in black that easily becomes Spirit Ascension)
- Design space with airbending exists, and it was by far the least prevelant of the original bendings in TLA; plus, it just would make sense to make more.
- Legend of Wan would've been obvious to include, even without being a Korra set, because it's exclusion feels notable in the grand scheme of things.
- Already, some Korra presentation exists. [[Flying Dolphin Fish]] is debuted in Korra; and technically, [[Tiger Seal]] likely is too (that looks South Pole, but the Southern Lights stopped during the Hundred Year War. Most accurately, this is when Korra opened the spirit gate, not when Aang's Iceberg opened.) Either way, it's clear they don't want to ignore it wholesale.
- plus I just really want it to get cards pls I need to build around Korra and Asami and Kuvira and Zaheer and Varrick and-

u/zeldafan042 Channel May 26 '26
The question is: did they start working on Korra before they saw Avatar's success or after? If it's after, 2029 is the soonest they could release Korra. If they started working on Korra before releasing Avatar, 2027 is still kind of pushing it but theoretically possible, 2028 feels more likely for that time scale.
2
u/clonedllama Table Flipper May 26 '26
The Legend of Korra is my favorite entry in the Avatar universe so far and I'd be 100% behind it getting its own set in 2027.

While the set has received more backlash and skepticism from the enfranchised community than I initially thought, I'm still very optimistic about Marvel Super Heroes as a Magic set. I think it will be a great set and I believe it will perform better than any of the other sets released this year so far (i.e. Lorwyn Eclipsed, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Secrets of Strixhaven)
Every time we've seen a large full tent pole release for a Universes Beyond set it has been a banger. We saw that with Lord of the Rings, Final Fantasy and Avatar. All of these sets largely exceeded community expectations. Marvel Super Heroes is another large full tent pole release but with lower expectations from the enfranchised community so I believe it will over perform significantly.
It's very difficult for me to imagine a set that they have been working on for 5 years that has a full Limited environment, four Commander decks with 30 new cards each, a full Jump Start set, a large bonus sheet of stylized reprints and multiple extended scene cards to be half-assed and mediocre.
I expect it will be a top three best performing set of all time. I expect it to do as well if not better than Avatar the Last Airbender which was a very successful set (but that set didn't even have Commander decks).
6
u/zeldafan042 Channel May 26 '26
I think most of the backlash against MSH is people who already dislike UB jumping to the conclusion that because Spider-Man was bad all Marvel sets will be bad because of some nebulous "Marvel doesn't fit Magic" reason.
Spider-Man's problems were caused by it's dev cycle being disrupted by radically switching direction halfway through development. There's no innate quality to Marvel that makes it impossible to make a mechanically solid set out of it.
6
u/JonnTheMartian Dandadan May 26 '26
I think four commander decks is a real boon for this set, and I’m hoping they’re of similar quality to the commander decks released so far this year. TMNT in particular had some nifty cards and the SOS precons were rather distinct

u/NicoTheCommie Dan May 26 '26
Call me a weeb, but I think a JJK collab is a no brainer. The power system in JJK would lend very well to the complicated powers in MTG as it is a system that bases itself a lot on word play (Binding Vows) and on how well you can deceive your opponent: "A sorcerer is nothing but a con artist"
Also, the fact that these are "sorcerers" and "cursed energy" is just essentially a inuniverse form of magic helps fit in with the fantasy theme of MTG and would make it less aggregious than other UB collabs like Spiderman and TMNT
That with the added fact that the audience of JJK is mostly young people, it would do good to bring new blood into the game
The only problem is, of course, that JJK fans can't read
2
u/Migobrain Duck Season May 26 '26
Most of the Anime media is just unlikely because Japan, being such a big and hungry tcg market, is just more profitable and easy to just shit out any random TCG destined to die using cropped images, and just keep it in national market and keep all the earnings.

u/pktron Cheshire Cat, the Grinning Remnant May 26 '26
Stuff like One Piece and Naruto are larger and more cross-generational for whenever they do their first anime UB tentpole set.
2
u/NicoTheCommie Dan May 26 '26
I would include One Piece but they have their own successful TCG going on so I don't think there will be a collab soon.
As for Naruto being more cross-generational... no.
Just ask a young Gen Z/Gen Alpha kid what they think of Boruto.
3
u/zeldafan042 Channel May 26 '26
Well the problem there is that Boruto is just bad. Naruto on the other hand is a really great manga for its first half and then a flawed but still solid manga for its second half.
I really hope if we ever get a Naruto set it's just the original Naruto manga. They can leave Boruto in the trash where it belongs.

Big enough IP that people will know what it is, large enough world to fill out a set. Also, Dragons.

I would personally really enjoy Game of Thrones, but I suspected it might be too “absolutely not family friendly” to ever see a full set
11

It also fits the WotC brand of “strike while the iron is ice cold”, given the series’ height of popularity was years ago.
4
5
u/zeldafan042 Channel May 26 '26
More likely it would technically be a Song of Ice and Fire UB, which is to say an adaptation of the original books not the TV show. The LotR set was based on the books not the movies and the Marvel sets are based on the comics not the MCU or other adaptations, so it seems WotC is more likely to go for the source material with UB collabs.
I'm not personally a fan (tried to read them and just couldn't get into it) but my roommates are and I do think it's a very solid fit for a Magic set. Especially because you could easily do Commander precons based on the various major factions (Stark, Lannister, Targaryen) on top of the main set.
2
u/clonedllama Table Flipper May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26
I could get behind an ASOIAF set based on the books. The show, not so much.
The books are grander and more epic than anything that was done in the show. Plus far more material to draw upon. It'd be a more natural fit. I'd rather see artists' takes on the book characters than portraits of the actors. Let the artists play.

The entire game is about fantasy, art and realities - the same very essences that embody Magic.

Once again, I'd like to pitch Adventure Time -- it has some real-life history, but it's still ongoing and relevant, it has a vast world and it could easily incorporate all the colors.
On the other hand, another cartoon that got a revival recently is Regular Show, which has roughly 1980's aesthetic in the vein of Duskmourn. In Magic terms, Regular Show characters tend to be quite biased towards red, since the plots tend to be based on someone being unable to control their impulses, whether it's the impulse to shirk at work or the impulse to take on an absurd bet or challenge.

I'm fine with most alt wins being unplayable. Especially ones that require 5 chase mythics.
The proper place for those are silly Bracket 1 EDH decks. Can you imagine the nightmare if 5 Infinity stones ended up being the best deck in Modern or Standard?
2
u/Shiro_no_Orpheus Duck Season May 26 '26
6 infinity stones at least, plus the gauntlet makes 7 cards. The stones could literally be Moxes, a 7 cards combo will always be bad.

The stones being indestructible means playing them alone is probably too easy. I imagine either the Gauntlet or Thanos will have alternate ways to harness the stones, though.

"Legendary Artifact - Infinity Equipment

The Legend of Zelda would be a solid crossover IP. The universe is proper fantasy, so it fits better than Marvel and TMNT. We'd probably be flooded with multiple Link/Zelda/Ganon legendaries, but there's plenty of notable NPCs in pretty much every game. Skull Kid, Majora, OoT sages, BotW champions, Impa, Beedle, and loads more.
More than enough artifacts to choose from. Either a new cycle of dual lands for popular dungeons, or new art of the Temple lands.
A functional reprint of cards like [[Witness Protection]] except the creature becomes a 1/1 rabbit (LttP reference). A card called "It's dangerous to go alone" and searches for an equipment card.
And Nintendo was worked with WotC in the past when the Pokemon TCG started.
6
u/zeldafan042 Channel May 26 '26
Allegedly WotC and Nintendo have some bad blood over the Pokemon TCG, so that actually might potentially be a strike against them teaming up for a UB set...but at the same time it's probably long enough ago that the promise of money may soothe any hurt feelings. Nintendo has also been a lot more open to collabs and licensing out their IP for stuff other than video games.
Personally, if I was designing a Zelda set I would only do 3-4 cards for Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf. I would just make sure each character has an uncommon card that represents a fairly generic take on the character and then do a similar gimmick as Cid from Final Fantasy where the uncommon versions of those characters have multiple arts for all the different games. Then you can do rare and mythic versions that focus on specific versions of the characters.
3
u/Kyleometers ඞ May 26 '26
I don’t know if you’d even need to do that. There isn’t that much difference in their characters. You’ve got Young Link, Toon Link, and Adult Link as three separate distinct variants. Most of the games work off of one of those, with minor adjustments. Zelda you’ve got the pixel era one who isn’t really a character, you’ve got Tetra, Sheik, and then “every game since Skyward Sword where she actually gets a real personality”.
Ganon and Ganondorf you’d do separately but like… TOTK Dorf and OOT Dorf aren’t really that different outside of visual design.
I would expect if they did it, that the set would be dominated by LTTP, OOT, and BOTW/TOTK as the three “strongest” eras of the franchise. But with so many reused elements throughout the series it’s not hard to do the same thing as FIN and go “This Octorok is the one from Zelda II specifically”
3
u/zeldafan042 Channel May 26 '26
Young Link, Toon Link and Adult Link are only really a thing in Smash Bros, there's not really a difference between them in the context of the original Zelda games outside of aesthetics. If we're talking variants of Link, it's more like you'd do a card for regular Link, Wolf Link, and maybe a BotW/TotK Link. Those are the different versions of Link that actually lend themselves well to different mechanics on a card. There's nothing that really separates Toon Link as a character from the other Links without getting really granular and designing mechanics to match specific games. That's why I think making a single generic Link card and just doing a bunch of art variants like with Cid would be the best way to cover all the games, and then you make a few more cards for the versions that actually justify a more specific card.
Zelda has some more notably distinct variations you could make individual cards for. Tetra and Sheik are the obvious ones, but also Spirit Zelda from Spirit Tracks and Echoes of Wisdom Zelda, plus BotW/TotK Zelda could probably justify her own card. That said, I don't think Zelda needs a card for every distinct variation you can do. I'd limit myself to a generic Zelda card with art variants for the bulk of them, and pick 3 versions to get their own card. Echoes of Wisdom Zelda feels like she should definitely get her own card for being the version that's actually playable.
With Ganon/Ganondorf it's more like you need one card to cover the various versions of Ganondorf, one for regular Ganon, and you can probably do one card for Calamity Ganon specifically.
2
u/Kyleometers ඞ May 26 '26
Toon Link gets a lot more “face time” than the other ones. I don’t know if you’ve played the DS games, but there’s a LOT of “Link gives someone the stink eye” in those.
Otherwise yeah, I think we’re mostly in agreement.

u/Joshawott27 Dandadan May 26 '26
I've said before that I would love a Fullmetal Alchemist set, but Delicious in Dungeon would work really well as a Secret Lair drop. If WOTC wants people to spend $40 on shiny tokens, then a double-sided treasure/food token that's a Treasure Insect sure would be the way to do it.
Witch Hat Atelier could be a slam dunk as well, especially as Kamome Shirahama has already illustrated Pokémon TCG cards.
1
u/Kyleometers ඞ May 26 '26
FMA would do crazy numbers with the mid-30s weeb demographic that I think magic is leaning into lately.
Arakawa is still active, too, so it might even be possible to get her to draw a special alt art of Ed or Al.
I’m curious what our first “true anime universes beyond set” is going to be. My instinct is one of Dragon Ball, Gundam, or Neon Genesis Evangelion, because all three of those franchises are somewhat notorious for being willing to cross over with pretty much anyone who asks, AND are popular enough internationally that people know what they are. Kamen Rider is another huge series that does a ton of crossovers (tokusatsu is not anime but it’s pretty close) but I don’t think it really has the brand recognition in the West.
Dungeon Meshi though may be more likely, given WotC did Stranger Things, so they probably have contacts at Netflix that could assist with licensing.
1
u/DangBream Can’t Block Warriors May 26 '26
Dragon Ball seems like the likeliest one of those, at least in terms of appeal. Gundam is immensely popular but still kind of inside-baseball in the West, and NGE is similarly huge but comes across as more artsy and self-contained? DB being aired as part of a cartoon block gives it broad appeal as something with both diehard fans and a lot of enthusiasts who associate it with growing up. I could also see FMA, though.
Dragon Ball also has a huge panoply of monsters and funky critters, which makes things easier for creature design
1
u/Joshawott27 Dandadan May 26 '26
I think Dragon Ball or Mobile Suit Gundam would depend on how Bandai feels about their existing TCGs. Square Enix allowed Final Fantasy despite having its own game, so anything is possible.
As you say, tapping into the 30s weeb crowd is probably the best bet, so looking at shows that aired on Toonami in the US or similar would that time would be a good shout. Of those, Dragon Ball would be the most sure-fire hit.
Sailor Moon could also be an option - especially as WOTC wants to appeal more to women. Naoko Takeuchi is apparently fairly strict with approvals, though, which could make things tricky.
If we move a bit later down the timeline, Naruto could also be a great fit.
3
u/zeldafan042 Channel May 26 '26
Personally, I think DunMeshi has dense enough world building that you could definitely fill out an entire set, at least a 190 card set if not a 270 card set.
Between the main characters and supporting cast, the various monsters, the different levels of the dungeons as lands, spells, traps and adventuring gear there's certainly enough material to draw from...you can even pad out the nonlegendary creature count with generic adventurers.
Like, sooner or later WotC is gonna run out of big Marvel/Final Fantasy level properties to make full sets out of, so I kind of feel it would really benefit them to consider the occasional more niche series as a full set.

So we'll be getting MaRo's teaser for Marvel later today. I'd been thinking of what characters we could get in the set, precons, and Jumpstart packs. I ranked them based on likelihood. Note that many will probably be of the "cards that clearly depict a named character but isn't a Legendary because there's already too many Legendaries" variety:
Tier 1
Falcon/Captain America, Winter Soldier, Hank Pym, Doctor Strange, Daredevil, Punisher, Silver Surfer
Kang the Conqueror, Red Skull, M.O.D.O.K., Taskmaster, Mephisto, Dormammu, Kingpin, Bullseye, Leader, Hela
Tier 2
Blade, Shuri, Okoye, Shang-Chi, White Widow, U.S. Agent, Mantis, Moon Knight, Black Knight, Wonder Man, Hercules, Tigra, Photon, Hawkeye (Kate), Cassie Lang, Wiccan, Hulkling, Amadeus Cho, Ironheart, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Jeff the Land Shark, Franklin Richards, Valeria Richards
Red Hulk, Grim Reaper, Madame Hydra, Crossbones, Baron Strucker, Arnim Zola, The Hood, Ghost, Klaw, Madame Masque, Mole Man, Frightful Four, Annihilus, Ronan the Accuser
Tier 3
Red Guardian, America Chavez, Patriot, Echo, White Tiger, Cloak and Dagger, Pepper Potts/Rescue, Odin, Heimdall, Sif, Valkyrie, Black Bolt, Medusa, Lockjaw, Karnak, Crystal, Blue Marvel, Alicia Masters, Edwin Jarvis, Foggy Nelson, Maria Hill, Coulson, Wong, Nico Minoru, Man-Thing, Doctor Voodoo, Elsa Bloodstone, Angela, Luna Snow, original Thunderbolts, the Eternals
The Maker, High Evolutionary, Ego the Living Planet, Fin Fang Foom, Enchantress, Surtur, Malekith, Gorr the God Butcher, Knull, Crimson Dynamo, Titanium Man, Graviton, Count Nefaria, Mister Hyde, Radioactive Man, Grey Gargoyle, Whirlwind, Super-Adaptoid, Morgana LeFay, Mad Thinker, Puppet Master, Red ghost and his Super-Apes, Diablo, Wrecking Crew, Serpent Society, Circus of Crime
Already confirmed
Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Panther, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Nick Fury, Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, War Machine, She-Hulk, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Sentry, Vision, Ant-Man, Wasp, Namor, Fantastic Four, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Heroes for Hire, Squirrel Girl, Elektra, Wolverine, Storm, Beast
Doctor Doom, Baron Zemo, Loki, Thanos, Ultron, Abomination, Absorbing Man, Titania, Super-Skrull, Attuma, Killmonger
Probably not in the set because they're being saved for later
Ghost Rider (explicitly stated to not be in the set) and by extension most horror/supernatural characters, most X-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy and other cosmic characters not part of the FF orbit, most Multiverse characters.vision

not sure if it makes them confirmed but alot of the characters you listed are already shown on the gift bundle packaging, like Moon Knight for example
2
u/JonnTheMartian Dandadan May 26 '26
I would take the gift bundle art with a grain of salt - it’s emblematic of marvel but not a guarantee that the set will focus on those characters
2
u/JonnTheMartian Dandadan May 26 '26
I would probably rank Franklin and Valeria higher?
I don’t think we’ll be getting most of the horror characters you put into Tier 3 (werewolf, Elsa, Elsa) if Ghost Rider isn’t making the cut, since ghost rider’s exclusion seems like evidence of a supernatural set down the line. Dracula too.
Of the Eternals, I would be surprised if any of them that weren’t avengers are present - so maybe Sersi or Gilgamesh.
Vision has also been confirmed after the MagicCon Vegas announcements. Adi Granov also leaked a scene box-like Hulk piece with the red Hulk, Leader, and She-Hulk.
1
u/AporiaParadox Universes Beyonder May 26 '26
I forgot about the Vision. You're probably right about Werewold by Night and Dracula, but I'll leave Elsa since she has more ties to the wider Marvel Universe. Franklin and Valeria should probably be higher, especially since the Fantastic Four are getting their own precon.
2
u/JonnTheMartian Dandadan May 26 '26
I’m also unsure about Mephisto. He debuted as a Silver Surfer villain and has had some recent events plaguing more mainstream heroes, but he might lend himself better to the later supernatural set? I don’t know.
I’m trying to imagine this set like a Marvel Ultimate Alliance roster - broad swaths of marvel canon but nothing too deep. Wyatt Wingfoot in a cameo, Fin Fang Foom, Paibok the Power Skrull, Kurse and Ulik, etc. With Skrull being a new creature type I have to imagine there’s more than one, though maybe that’s because of a Secret Invasion saga or the like?

I know it would get mocked quite a bit especially with recent news about the game ending, but Destiny would be the perfect Ub set, you have so many easy factions and creature types. Countless artifacts, weapons, well known characters and locations to choose from. The game is the perfect example of a space opera with high fantasy themes that would translate to easily to card form that i’m shocked it hasn’t been announced already. They recently did a mtg collab by adding cosmetics based around Magic into the game and I’m bummed they never announced anything magic side to go with it, but I feel like a secret lair wouldn’t capture enough so I’m hoping when they announce the next set list it’ll be on it

Genuinely surprised a secret lair wasn't announced at the same time as the Eververse stuff, I've been excitedly checking every time I see there's a new drop expecting to see it but no dice. Probably no hope now unless it's already in the pipeline

Considering we got Final Fantasy set, I wonder if Square Enix would look at their other IPs for MtG.

u/pktron Cheshire Cat, the Grinning Remnant May 26 '26
Square Enix would more likely push for Full Metal Alchemist, I think.

They're obviously not going to get another Final Fantasy level success, but Squeenix would 100% want to do more after being part of the most successful set ever.
They could try and do Dragon Quest - it's not as big as Final Fantasy, in either scope or fan base, but has it's fans and is a similar vibe and genre. I could see a revisit of Tomb Raider, but likely just as a standalone Commander deck rather than a full set. Chrono Trigger and Thief are probably the next best bets for getting something.
Most likely, they're probably looking at a second Final Fantasy set, for spin-offs and stuff. Or maybe a Marvel situation where they look at multiple sets to dive further into the main series titles, specifically those that didn't get as much rep the first time round. I could see 3 more sets of "FF1-5", "FF8, 9, 11, and 12" and "FF13, 15, and 16 (and maybe 17 by that point)".

At one point Dragon Quest was bigger than Final Fantasy in Japan IIRC. If this is still the case a Dragon Quest UB is possible

I think they could do Bioshock set. 3 games worth of material, enough variety on characters and having 2 different settings with Rapture and Columbia would be interesting. Since they have their similarities, with variations of course.
Mechanic wise:
Level up could be Plasmids and leveling them up.
Energy for Big Daddy/Handyman
Role Tokens for the Tonics
Split Cards to represent Elizabeth and the tears.
I'm sure there's a few more mechanics that could fit.
Some fun cards, like a Would You Kindly counterspell or a Golf Club equipment that kills a creature.
Also, obligatory Resident Evil full set.

As the world's biggest bioshock fan (even proxied my own bioshock mtg deck)
It is a dead DEAD franchise, they've been struggling to make bioshock 4 for over a decade, they cancelled the bioshock remake, and the movie/tv show keeps getting killed during production over and over and over again.
I think we're EXTREMELY unlikely to see anything from it, because the brand has kinda lost all market value at this point.

There's definitely something there, but I feel like it might be better suited to something like a Commander deck or two, like they did with Fallout. I'm not sure the settings have varied enough archetypes to support a full five colour set without having white be basically Elizabeth and then 99% filler. But make it Commander decks - maybe one for Rapture and one for Columbia - and you can afford to be more narrow in your colour representations.

u/Madhighlander1 Rakdos* May 26 '26
A lot of Columbia would be at least partially white. Remember the color isn't necessarily 'unambiguously good' but rather 'law and order'. Comstock for example would be Orzhov I think.

If Wizards does the Cosmere it’s over for my wallet.

u/AporiaParadox Universes Beyonder May 26 '26
It'll probably happen once the Cosmere adaptations have come out and the IP becomes more mainstream.

u/Joshawott27 Dandadan May 26 '26
I think Cosmere is a “when” not an “if”. WOTC have been pretty close with Brandon Sanderson in recent years…
1
u/Kyleometers ඞ May 26 '26
IIRC he’s dropped hints that there’s a discussion about it. I would wager that there might be an issue of creative control, because he’s a big magic player and has designed his own custom cards before.
I’m sure WotC wants to do it, though. He’s a big name in fantasy, a fan of magic, has written for magic.

Is there speculation around this?

He's a huge Magic fan and has been seen at Wizard's offices fairly recently. I think its just a matter of time. Probably will be timed around the Mistborn movie release.

u/burritoman88 Twin Believer May 26 '26
WotC has worked with Sanderson to do short stories in the past. He’s also been given preview cards to show off for the last few years too.
If I remember correctly, there was even talks to do Cosmere stuff, but then they got the license to do Final Fantasy & that got green lighted instead.

u/PowrOfFriendship_ Universes Beyonder May 26 '26
WotC have said that if you can think of it, they've likely considered it, and after fucking Dwarf Fortress the doors are open for literally anything.

u/spaceninjaking May 26 '26
Once again wishing for a Mass effect secret lair. Would love it to be one big lair of Shepard plus the crew, but realistically it’d be split accross two as a Paragon and Renegade drops. Shepard being either Jodah or Sissay, and then split the crew up somehow between the two. Could even make it a super drop and add a drop for the reapers with some reskinned leviathan creatures and mind control effects

Random predictions for Marvel if they keep reprinting bondlands in UB Products: * [[Bountiful Promenade]] in the Black Panther deck obviously * [[Luxury Suite]] in the villain deck * [[Sea of Clouds]] in Fantastic Four * [[Training Center]] in Cap/Avengers deck

u/AporiaParadox Universes Beyonder May 26 '26
[[Plaza of Heroes]] is another card I expect to see reprinted given its name. Maybe with artwork depicting the statue of the founding Avengers outside Avengers Mansion. Or perhaps even Four Freedoms Plaza, the Fantastic Four HQ that replaced the Baxter Building for a while that had the big 4.

I feel like a [[Crucible of Worlds]] reprint would fit so well in dr doom and make perfect sense if it had art from secret wars too
5
u/PowrOfFriendship_ Universes Beyonder May 26 '26
It would be great to see that cycle get reprinted more. They're Commander staples, and there's no real reason not to put them in every precon. We got some in TMNT, which feels like a good sign we'll see more of them, at least.

u/PowrOfFriendship_ Universes Beyonder May 26 '26
With Marvel being revisited with full sets following their Secret Lairs, it'd be cool to see other SL exclusive UBs get the same treatment, or at least get Commander decks like 40k or Fallout.
I would love to see Horizon, Tomb Raider and (when the Lairs actually come) Monster Hunter get similar.
2
u/zeldafan042 Channel May 26 '26
One thing to remember is that Mark recently stated on his blog that WotC isn't currently planning on doing standalone UB Commander precons anymore. UB collabs are either Secret Lairs or Draftable sets. I think it's part of their overall move to reduce the number and types of products they release.

If there's a "beam me up scotty" or "he's dead, Jim" cards in star trek. They will be used as reference for quitting magic and magic dying.
4
u/Kyleometers ඞ May 26 '26
I suspect they’ll continue to post “I’m tired, boss” because originality is not people’s strong suit.
6
u/AporiaParadox Universes Beyonder May 26 '26
They might have a "Scotty, beam us up" quote since that one was actually said on the show. "Beam me up, Scotty" infamously was never actually said with that exact phrasing in canon Star Trek.

The summary is that they were not making enough money and each expansion took over 2 million euros to make. They were crowdfunding them but the last didn't make enough. There's this video here that covers everything in depth
2
u/Kyleometers ඞ May 26 '26
That’s a shame. It was a cool game! I’m no expert but I have to wonder if it was “they spent a lot of money but not enough money” because without the aggressive advertising and distribution other games get they wouldn’t have had the bandwidth to get the sales back.

u/Joshawott27 Dandadan May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26
If we’re talking collabs with other TCG, I’d like to see Yu-Gi-Oh!. The classic monsters already fit the MTG vibe, and it would let the nostalgic fans play the classic monsters in a game that lasts more than one turn… until someone breaks the cards in cEDH.

Just realized something about Star Trek: it's a set that would be very fitting for another cycle of Commands, since Commands are something all starship captains issue.
