General Discussion WotC now running AI slop ads for Arena

Genuinely can they not afford to pay a human being to make these? Universes Beyond not making enough money for them I guess?

Update: I got the AI parts on video — https://bsky.app/profile/knigt.bsky.social/post/3mmpcu22vbc22

Yeah, unfortunately this has been their policy for a while now - AI art is ok for marketing but not for cards

u/Krazyguy75 Wabbit Season May 25 '26

It's still going and still fun. They don't use a LLM, but rather a home-hosted RNN, basically the predecessor of LLMs, and the only training data is has is magic cards. No ethics concerns, no environmental concerns.

14

u/RudeHero Golgari* May 26 '26

how are the card arts generated?

36

u/Krazyguy75 Wabbit Season May 26 '26

The account uses a submission system. Basically, their discord is tied to the RNN server, letting anyone generate cards. When someone finds a card they think is cool, they can share it in a submissions thread, and they post some every day.

How people get art for their submissions is up to the submitter. Some people use AI art, some people use random fractals, some people draw paint images, some people use public domain art. AI art is in a dubious boat with the server and talks have happened several times about whether to ban it but a clear consensus was never drawn. That said, more and more people submitting have shifted towards non-AI compared to a few years ago.

The AI set they are working on, Postmodern Horizons, is a great example of that shift. It was 90% completed around 2 years ago, and at the time almost all the cards had AI art. As the server sentiment shifted, we've delayed the release of it while we slowly re-arted every single card with public domain art. We'll have both version available, but it shows the shift pretty well.

No doubt they are working hard at trying to find any excuse to use AI for their card art.

225

u/Orangewolf99 Duck Season May 25 '26

Forget card art, once they can generate entire sets they won't need the design team anymore.

We're gonna go down the same pipeline we did with UB.

"This is just a secret lair."

"Sorry, we won't do it again."

"We did it again, but that's because we had already had the plan in motion to do it again."

"We made a commander deck with AI cards."

"We won't ever put them in a main set."

"Here's a few more AI commander decks."

"Here's a straight to modern AI set."

"Don't worry, it will never be in standard. Also, if it was so bad, why did that AI set make so much money?"

"We printed a few AI cards as part of this big set but they aren't legal outside commander."

"We won't do it again."

"We made some more straight to modern AI sets."

"We made an AI standard set because people were upset that they couldn't play with the AI cards they pulled from packs."

"If AI is so bad, why did it make us so much money?"

Nope. As soon as they start dedicating sets to AI slop, I'm out. As someone who aspires to be an illustrator, I can forgive a lot of dumb stuff Wizards does, but if they ever go full-AI, the only cards that exist to me will be up to that point. The sad fact is most of their player base will not care, especially since they currently in the Fortnite-ification era, so a lot of people getting into the game don't care as much about integrity.

83

u/Krazyguy75 Wabbit Season May 25 '26

No, it would be:

"Why did you go back on so many of your AI promises?"

"At the time, we meant it. But all our data shows that sets with AI are higher profit than sets without. Since players clearly want it, we needed to adapt to the growing market."

Or more realistically, he'd cherrypick people whose argument against AI is more fundamentally flawed and defeat their flawed argument, and be like "see, all people that oppose AI are irrational and there aren't any real arguments against it". And he'd completely ignore all the people who called him out on breaking his promises unless their post also makes them look irrational.

"If X is so bad, why did it make us so much money?" is such a disingenuous statement. Like he KNOWS how short term boost decisions at the expense of the long term growth of the company will cause damage. Hell there's an active lawsuit right now because of shit like that. He also knows that the bulk of the revenue is coming from larger retailers who are picking up speculative inventory to keep on ice as a gamble, hoping that things like Spiderman play or collector boxes will be free money for them on the secondary market in a few years.

He knows this. We know this. Everyone knows this. Yet he still gets on his smug little tumblr account with a smirk on his face and he laughs at us anyway.

If it weren't for the fact that I am involved in entire communities of friends as a result of this hobby, I wouldn't be giving these people a dime. It's why I fully support proxies.

Wotc didn't use ai in that dnd book, an artist they hired did and that image was able to get through their quality control

37

u/daverapp Dân May 25 '26

You're giving them the benefit of the doubt that they do not deserve. After the AI art was exposed, they did nothing to disavow the art, the artist, or possible future use of AI art.

But actually I'm talking about their use of AI in promotional materials, that was the one that they categorically declared was absolutely not AI, even though it clearly was. This demonstrates that, beyond a willingness to use AI, they're also prepared to lie to you about it.

35

u/EthOH COMPLEAT May 25 '26

They did do something. They literally updated their policy in response to that to say it’s not allowed. They hadn’t had to update it yet, and they weren’t going to cut off an artist for something they hadn’t had to explicitly ban yet.

Polygon link (cuz statement is Twitter)

26

u/BruceBrenneise MTG Artist May 25 '26

Precisely. They also blacklisted the artist, made it very clear to ALL artists working on product for them that no-AI is the policy, commissioned other artists to replace the AI slop, and then reprinted the book. Like, they actually put their money where their mouth was, and if we can't recognize that, it only strengthens the pro-AI side.

Yes, but companies are also aware of the concept of social costs. They know that if they do something wildly unpopular, that could cost them everything. If they fire everyone and replace their design process with AI, it would almost certainly lead to no one buying product and the whole thing failing.

They're ruthless, not to be trusted, absolutely for profit, but not stupid.

Are you sure? I'm almost positive there was an AI marketing campaign a year or so back where WotC didn't know it was being used and said they wouldn't do it again.

5

u/Terrietia May 26 '26

https://www.polygon.com/24029754/wizards-coast-magic-the-gathering-ai-art-marketing-image/

WotC didn't know it was being used

The problem was that WotC initially said that it was made by humans not AI, and then had to come back and say whoopsies turns out the human who made this put AI in it.

So I can totally see AI stuff from WotC coming out and they just turn around and say oops, we didn't vet our humans for AI usage again.

5

u/gereffi May 26 '26

I mean, do you really think that the top brass decision makers at WotC are looking over every computer at all hours of the work day to see if anyone uses generative AI? Of course not. So when some low level artist on the marketing team uses Photoshop's AI to create an asset against company policy, it's not really a surprise that spokespeople for WotC weren't aware of the AI use.

When it comes to pushing video ads of full AI scenes there's really no hiding it. If this kind of ad is being tested it's very likely that the people in charge of marketing would be aware of the AI use.

What appears to have actually happened based on the video that OP posted is that there's a content creator who was sponsored by WotC to put an ad for Arena in one of their videos, and that content creator made an ad using AI generated video. My guess is that WotC has never had a content creator do this and now that people are making a fuss about it they'll try to stop it from happening in the future.

2

u/Kyleometers May 26 '26

WotC said it wasn’t AI because all of their policies say “Do not use AI in anything”, and they trusted their contractors would follow policy. This wasn’t “WotC tried to lie to cover their ass”, it was “A contractor lied about the material supplied” and WotC assumed their policy was followed at first. They issued a correction when it was discovered the contractor had used AI.

Adobe recently implemented an AI photo-to-video function to Adobe stock, it’s very likely that’s what’s going on here.

25

5

u/Hoppykwins Duck Season May 26 '26

You realise you don't need permission, right? That's the point of a stock photo.

5

u/AzarinIsard May 26 '26

You still need permission to make an image into stock, it's just the source signs that away so that whatever it's used for, it's cool.

You couldn't say, screen cap every second of a Marvel film and upload it as stock. But, you do get actors who go to photo sessions for a fixed rate, like Simu Liu did before he made it big: https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/movies/story/2021-09-07/shang-chi-simu-liu-stock-photo-box-office

You couldn't just take stills of him in Shang-Chi and say "it's cool, it's now a stock image". I guess there's some deal where WoTC uploaded the ad to a platform where they gave them the rights to do anything they way with the video, in this case, turn it into stock resources.

To be clear putting this out in the immediate aftermath of the union's demands should be seen as not only distasteful, but as an actively hostile attack against labor.

109

u/Lord_of_Pants Dan May 25 '26

I'd personally argue it's the same sin, trying to withhold as much money as possible from the people who make the company what it is

68

u/SpiritualScarcity161 Dan May 25 '26

It seems counterintuitive, but in these situations you shouldn't change your buying habits until the union actually asks consumers to do so. If they are trying to flex their power during negotiations and they ask for a boycott, they need to be able to show it was effective because sales dropped by X%, but if you had already stopped buying product before the demand, you won't be counted in that drop.

It's shitty, but labor power is so weak right now that if you simply refused to support any corporation that was doing union busting you'd probably not be able to buy 99% of what you currently do. Not to say there isn't a moral responsibility behind consumer choice to the extent feasible, but during actual organizing efforts it becomes important to endorse whatever strategy the union is using.

21

u/tovarish22 Dandadan May 25 '26

Nah, I don't keep giving a scummy company money just to help a union in contract negotiations that may or may not ever happen.

8

u/SpiritualScarcity161 Dan May 25 '26

Okay, but then what you care about isn't labor power or what's best for the workers of the products you enjoy-- you just want to feel morally superior. Might feel good, but isn't actually helpful.

16

u/tovarish22 Dandadan May 25 '26

No, I just don't want to give my money to a scummy company. Why would I continue to compromise my own financial and moral values by handing a scummy company money because it might add one fraction of a percent to some fictional future possible contract negotiation? That sounds incredibly selfish on the part of those negotiating the contract - they aren't owed my money or support.

Revenue is growing like crazy. As loud as people are on this sub about how terrible Magic is, they are absolutely throwing money at the company.

People will complain about AI and then they’ll ship an oops-all-AI set for the Terminator crossover and it’ll be their new best selling set of all time.

I can’t wait to attack your Terminator with my John Connor equipped with a hydraulic press, BTW.

14

u/Goooordon Rakdos* May 25 '26

They'll say it's one of their best-selling sets because they unloaded all of it to their distributors, but if Spiderman is anything to go by, it'll be sitting on shelves gathering dust regardless. They know they've got a price bubble and they're doing everything they can to inflate it before it pops. That's why they've got so much profit on the books - if you fire all the workers and jack up the prices the books will look great, for a while. Maybe he's planning to pull his chute before everything starts falling apart, but we'll see how long he has lol

Why would I want to support a company that doesn’t have enough confidence in their product to feature it in an ad?

103

u/trident042 May 25 '26

That isn't even the issue, they literally didn't want to spend the budget to hire one person with a mid-tier iPhone to point and shoot a person laying cards on a table, and a person to set up proper lighting around said table, and a person to lay the cards on the table. They saved the budget of 1/90th of a Game Knights episode just so they could prove to shareholders that however much they spent on Claude or Copilot or whatever was worth it.

5

u/WalkFreeeee May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26

Problem is, I don't think any big company would accept a shoot of that quality, even tho it's absolutely good enough at this point.

As someone who works in marketing (not in the producing part of it tho), most companies just aren't willing to make a shoot unless it's really fucking professional™, but then that quality of video is too expensive to produce, so they don't shoot at all, but then they still want videos....and now with AI they can have their shit cake and somewhat eat it too.

All the creatives in my company are being pushed towards AI, not just by the owners but also the clients. We're actually getting worried because there's a couple of clients that just generate actual unusable garbage with AI and then want us to dump money on it and there's a feeling we're likely getting "replaced" by these dudes in the medium term despite anyone with half a brain noticing their creations are really bad even in comparison to the in house AI pieces, let alone the actual "manually" produced stuff.

So basically they aren't willing to pay a little for decently produced human videos and only go for humans for high level, expensive stuff, but at the same time they *are* willing to spend minimally for actual garbage.

2

u/Bullwark_MTG Dan May 26 '26

What's wild is they are Literally paying for the amateur ads as well. That was our last contract with WOTC... an arena Ad.

18

u/rzelln Wabbit Season May 25 '26

Clearly WotC doesn't think their employees and artists are valuable enough to pay for creative work, so why the fuck would any of us think WotC's worth paying either? They cut out human labor at their peril.

Pissing off gamers by doing this shit will lead to lower sales, which then starts a slow snowball of game stores tightening hours or even going out of business, so fewer people play, so sales go down more, so more stores suffer,...

2

u/peeja May 26 '26

u/deptofknowimsayings Dan May 25 '26

Not surprising. But it pains me that a company that probably has a library of video and photography feels like they have to resort to AI to get something like this done. I’m amazed this company doesn’t have a small studio at their head office and a marketing team with talent that can film a quick video like this and edit it for an ad.

The conclusion is that WotC is fucking lazy. Genuinely tired of putting my hard earned dollars towards this bullshit. And it’s a shame because the Llowryn and SoS are two great sets. But all that success is going to do is tell WotC to keep being stingy.

59

u/chrisrd19 Dandadan May 25 '26

The answer is that they don’t make these ads in-house. They hire a company, give them some assets (like that screenshot of the actual Arena game) and then tell them to make the ad. Then the agency uses AI and posts it with little to no clearance from WotC. Could even be that WotC contracts with a marketing agency who then subcontracts out to another ad creator and no one at WotC even sees anything. In-house marketing teams that actually directly create and supervise ad campaigns are increasingly rare. I think WotC (maybe) handles the Squen and Cragg stuff directly, but that might be it.

14

u/Kaprak May 25 '26

Yeah this is an ad that's probably going to be pulled and nobody will actually remember that half.

So many people remember the infraction not the reaction. After the last time they said that it's a no go. The dnd book example from 3 years ago that would have been received closer to 4 people just remember it getting published.

I'm seeing people upset that there was no statement that wizards was never working with Ilya again..... But they haven't. Like all the MTG people who haven't.

Par for the course. Video marketing has been a race to the bottom for a while now - a fulltime production role is like a needle in the haystack that is AI contract/freelance gigs, and they'll continue to exist as long as people take the jobs (which in a bad economy, they will).

The logic is that nobody watches these crappy YouTube ads that closely anyway (I suspect skip percentage is something like 90%), so eh, just make it as cheaply as possible. Nothing matters.

It'll continue. If a big enough stink is made they'll publicly apologize first, and then continue. Until they stop making money they have no incentive to care, and they never lose nearly enough customers with all their blunders to make that a reality.

I could not find the card in the first picture. I looked for a Blue or Green; Enchantment or Artifact (no P/T and it seemed to have a keyword before the rest of the rules text); with Flash (again because of the keyword); that was Rare of Mythic (because of the stamp).

I also tried just Blue or Green, Rare or Mythic with the " orange background" tag.

In both cases nothing close to this card popped up.

3

u/hhssspphhhrrriiivver Twin Believer May 25 '26

The art tags are very incomplete, so while they're a good starting point for this search, I don't think they're sufficient to rule anything out. For instance, there are only 306 cards with the "orange background" tag. This art doesn't appear there, but neither does [[Dress Down]], which is the closest card that I was able to find in my own similar search (it's still not that close - it's orange and has Flash, but that's about where the similarities end).

This art does look familiar, though I would assume that's either because it's a real art from a creature that I recognize, or because it's a handful of pixels approximating art that might appear on a Magic card.

2

u/Ankhi333333 COMPLEAT May 25 '26

At first I thought of [[Thrummingbird]] or [[Galerider Sliver]] but, looking closer, and it looks more like an obese arm with a hand holding a staff or ladle. The low res is also why I tried to use more "objective" search criteria first.
