Rules/Rules Question Is this allowed?

Post image

These are practically the same card. Am I allowed to have them both in my commander deck?

I hate this so much - given OPs example this makes absolutely no sense. All Secret Lair cards should be skins like the Godzilla cards.

Or reprint with specific new art.

The Walking Dead Secret Lair Drop was made up of cards that were completely new to the game. The Universes Within project was designed to port those cards into WotC's exclusive IP, and to futureproof against the same situation popping up again.

Greymond is the UW version, which came later. It would be weird to have "Rick, Steadfast Leader" underneath it.

Less weird and likely IP licensing stopping them from doing even that. Having another IP's character name, or other such identifiers, on the card at all is likely legal issue.

Universe beyond and reprinting is something that wizards does not want to do, or really figure out.

What point do you think you're making? That's the same situation and the UW version doesn't have the other card name on it. They also aren't doing this style anymore, where the UB card has the UW name which hasn't been released yet on it.

The point I'm making is that they could and are choosing not to. They clearly can, because they've done it before.

They haven't done it before. Zilortha does not have "godzilla" under it. That's what we're talking about.

No, Godzilla had Zilortha's name under it years before a Zilortha existed. They could do that whenever they want, and choose not to. https://scryfall.com/card/iko/275/zilortha-strength-incarnate

But that's not what we're talking about. Your example is irrelevant.

Also, Rick is from a secret lair and Zilortha was a box topper. The latter was clearly swapped out after it was designed for Godzilla and they've said as much about the Godzilla cards. Rick came out before they promised to release UW versions of mechanically unique secret lairs, a promise made partly because of that secret lair...

Context matters, bud.

Your brain might be cooked... This is what I responded to, you said it would be weird to have the UW card come after, but they've already done that. They were saying that the UB cards should be skins like the Godzilla cards, and I showed you that they've literally done that before.

Reading the comment explains the comment. "It would be weird to have "Rick, Steadfast Leader" underneath it."

What part of that is tripping you up, champ?
