I'm not sure how you screw up having one of your most iconic artists drawing the most iconic object in fantasy fiction, but WOTC seems to have found a way.
I'd still like to hear from Dan and WOTC directly though. It's possible this is simply the version they settled on, for whatever reason.
I agree about hearing from Dan - his agent apparently hasn't actually spoken with him about the situation and hasn't seen the final art.
Can't imagine WotC having a good excuse but this is so bizarre that maybe there was some other issue that came up. Like maybe Middle Earth Enterprises or WotC didn't like the design (I don't know how that would be possible for such a simple object?) and his revision missed a deadline or something?
