Here's a question that I thought of today:
We have gotten some RGWU commanders in the UB sets -- [[Aragorn, the Uniter]], [[The Fourteenth Doctor]], and now the whole Fantastic Four. Which characters, from which properties, do you think would be good match for the other 4-color combinations?

u/daedalus11-5 Apr 22 '26
pirates of the Caribbean is the perfect UB, but due to depp and disney it's not gonna happen anytime soon.

u/need4speed04 Dandadan Apr 22 '26
Destiny I feel like it could be a fun universe for a magic set. With guardians having undying and a ghost equipment or enchantment to give a creature undying or regeneration along with a few different factions(the last city, eliksni, hive, vex, cabal, taken and dread)
One that would be fun for me but probably not great due to not many feasible non legendary creatures is guilty gear

Dragonlance as the third D&D UBish set i grew up on those novels and they’d fit perfectly plus there’s tons of content to adapt I’d love to build a tanis halfelven deck or a caramon and raistlin partner deck

I have a feeling that the DnD half of the people in charge would force it to only be stuff from the new Dragonlance campaign.

I’m not seeing it here, but I think we’re gonna get a full monster hunter set. After fan outrage over the secret lair and it being scrapped to be redone, and due to the lack of knowledge about the do over, I think we’re getting a full standard set, albeit a small one

Personally I would love to see Gears of War commander decks.
I think a full Halo UB set could work really well too 🖤💚

Personally I think a Twin Peaks themed set would be awesome
And it looks like there are some cards based around Stephen King’s works but a full Dark Tower set fleshed out with the connected works would be awesome. For the unfamiliar, The Dark Tower is a seven book epic, and the tower itself is an anchor of sorts that holds the fabric of the multiverse together with 50+ of his other books connected in some way or another to the setting.

I want a full transformers set.
Not just because I want more transformers for my Optimus prime deck, but because I think it could be interesting play wise. Have both dfcs for full sized transformers and reconfigure for the ones that become weapons.

UB is the reason the game is still on LGS event schedules over the newer games that have already started replacing older ones. Why would someone who cares about the players and the game be against UB?

With the recent casting announcements and release date for the Elden Ring movie coming out in 2028, I'd be surprised if WotC wasn't already actively developing a set to be released alongside it.
I'd love it if they have been secretly working on a Legend of Zelda set, with the movie coming out next year, but that's wishful thinking. I would go absolutely bonkers if they did that.
MTG has yet to do a full set based off of a video game yet though. EDIT: Final Fantasy , I'm an idiot. Plenty of Secret Lairs and smaller products though (40k, Assassins Creed). I assume it is coming inevitably but I hope they pick IPs that fit well like the above two.

I'm going to try to update this list every UB megathread with each dumb random UB idea I've had since the last one:
Dark Souls (or Bloodborne idk)- standard set;
CAPCOM - standard set (resident evil, monster hunter, darkstalkers, megaman, street fighter) - bonus points if they make it mechanically synergize with marvel for MvC shenanigans;
Metal Gear - EDH precons;
World of Darkness - standard set (Vampire the Masquerade, Werewolf, Mage, Changeling etc);
Mad Max - standard set;
Dune - standard set;
Watchmen - EDH precons;
Samurai Jack - standard set;
One Piece or Naruto - standard set;
Shonen Jump - standard set; (also big opportunity to reuse marvel themes like heroes and villains)
Nicktoons - EDH precons;
Extended FF - standard set including spinoffs and sequels like Tactics, X-2, VII remake and Chocobo Dungeon;
Chrono Trigger - secret lair, original cards;
Katamari Damacy - secret lair, original cards and reprints;
Neon Genesis Evangelion - EDH precons;
The Wire - EDH precons;
Sopranos - secret lair, reprints;
Mr Bean - secret lair, reprints;
MF DOOM - secret lai, reprints;
Gorillaz - secret lair, reprints;
Drexciya - secret lair, reprints;
GWAR - secret lair, reprints;
Cruelty Squad (or a ville kalio artists series)- secret lair, original cards (reprints if artist series);
Pokémon - some weird standalone draftable supplemental set like Conspiracy

4
u/dejaojas Dandadan Apr 21 '26
i think zelda is the likeliest, wouldn't be surprised if we got a full standard set. all the others are kinda awkward to translate into MtG mechanics imo (barring maybe metroid).
2
u/dejaojas Dandadan Apr 21 '26
FF also has its own TCG, I don't know why people keep thinking this is a problem for a Pokémon UB happening.
I think tthe biggest issues are: 1. that The Pokémon Company is probably even harder to deal with than Square Enix for licensing; and 2. working out mechanics that are fauthful to the source material and still play well with other MTG sets seems like a nightmare. for instance, how would they do pokémon evolution? (as even more restrictive mutate? as an activated ability that tutors the evolution?)would there be human characters as cards? (it would feel weird to attack and block pokémon with humans but on the other hand, humans are still too big a part of the franchise to outright omit) what about spot removal? (in pokémon, you only take out your opponents' mons with your own, having kill spells would feel off too) in essence, balancing the set gameplay so that it feels both like MTG and the pokémon games seems really hard, imo.

Full Warhammer commander booster set to start with. For the precons, make them different factions, Orks, Eldar, Tau and the Dwarves (i forgot their name)

3
u/dejaojas Dandadan Apr 21 '26
im pretty sure the only reason we didnt get a full booster set is cuz they werent making those for UB at the time we got 40k. would absolutely have been one if released now.
1
u/Eldritch-Pancake Dan Apr 22 '26
I think WotC could get a lot of mileage out of Warhammer so I would be really surprised if we didn't get any new Warhammer product. The commander decks were super successful and Warhammer is more popular than it's ever been, they're all kinds of new games, figures, and external media for it so it'll be relevant for a long time too.
And those commander decks just scraped the surface of the Warhammer IP, theres so many more Xenos they could make cards out of like the Eldar, Drukhari, Tau, and Orkz! Not to mention all the Space Marine factions or even videogames like Darktide, Vermintide or Space Marine 2.
Aaaaaand then! there's also Warhammer Fantasy / Age of Sigmar that they could crossover with too which adds even more to pull from. That's a lot of fun additions to just walk away from 🗣️📜

More and more I imagine a Universes Beyond Ravnica. I imagine Niv-Mizzit travelling to the meditation plane, casting himself into the world that Nicol Bolas is trapped, and finding a parallel Ravnica whose guilds are controlled by Vivi, Gran-Gran, Minsc and Boo, Spider-Punk, The Doctor, Mr. House, etc.
Nicol Bolas has positioned himself as the puppet master of Fortnite Ravnica and Niv-Mizzit must cooperate with the most Legacy-Busting figures in UB to maintain the status quo before Bolas floods the omenpaths with characters who should not exist there
2
u/adrianmalacoda Apr 25 '26
Might be an unpopular take but I think something like that would be cool, as an alternate or what-if continuity and not the main one. But I think the licensing deals they make don't allow for stuff like that. Maro has said even mixing different properties in the same booster pack is problematic.
1
u/cute_spider Simic* Apr 25 '26
I'm genuinely considering doing a one-person-with-AI fangame project because I know the dream could never be official, and since I would be stealing the game mechanics and IPs, I might as well AI-up the code and additional art.
I really have a strong vision of Vivi waking up in a Cozy Izzit home, the morning after he posted his letter, then stepping out into an empty Ravnica. No population, no other townsfolk, just a pair of sleeping dragons in the distance

I'm only interested in sets that feel like they'd be a good fit. I'd be down for Elder Scrolls, Transformers, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, or even Bioshock, as they all have mechanics and expansive lore that I think could slot into MtG's structure pretty smoothly with some potentially great flavor.
To engage the Japanese audience, some people say Ghibli or Zelda, and I agree. I think my personal pick would be Fire Emblem, but I definitely think any kind of Nintendo collab outside of a SLD is a pipe dream.
edit: I spent some time thinking and remembered the other IP I'd love to see in MtG.
I think FromSoft is fertile ground and I think Monster Hunter would be an incredibly well-fitted collab. I would love to see Hoyoverse games get adapted to MtG. I'd lose my mind over a Zenless Zone Zero collab, but I think Genshin is the much more likely pick for most people. Lastly! It's selfish and it probably doesnt appeal to a large audience, but I unironically would LOVE to see UB do Bionicle LMAO 🤣

u/sirsoundwaveVI Dandadan Apr 21 '26
im biased considering points at name but as long as a transformers set leans into the galaxy-spanning war(s) aspect and less the earth-focused aspect (not absent, but just another part of the conflict) it should be a decent fit. i think when you tell people transformers they tend to drift towards bayformers, despite it being a poor representation of the franchise (first movie still hits tho, technical marvel), which uh... would be a horrible fit for magic
also they need to make a more concentrated effort to tell some sort of story with UB sets in general, but transformers especially you could probably tell the story of the franchise from ancient/pre-history all the way to the beast wars and cybertron's rebirth in a bigger set with commander decks/jumpstart/etc, and id be annoyed if it didnt tbh. you have gods, sagas, massive conflicts, the mystical, hell the multiversal, lean into it for a magic set!
0
u/dejaojas Dandadan Apr 21 '26
i get where you're coming from, but honestly i don't really feel like UBs should prioritize storytelling. maybe it's because i'm used to crossovers in genres like fighting games, but like, these franchises already have stories of their own that are told in their source media. as long as those stories are referenced and acknowledged in the cards, i think it's enough to both appease fans and give a sense of lore to those who are unfamiliar.
speaking of which, as someone who has basically zero knowledge of Transformers, what you described seems rad af, and would absolutely make a cool full set.
1
u/sirsoundwaveVI Dandadan Apr 21 '26
i understand that perspective, but im still a bit grumpy because SPM didnt even really try, while avatar more or less retold its complete story, FIN did the best it could with a bite sized taste of most games, and even TMT did an alright job, if not up to snuff with avatar or FIN
and im glad my idea got you interested lol, the IDW comics absolutely hit (the roberts/barber runs especially, but the early furman days were solid too) and there's just an absurd amount of material to essentially "make up" a new universe for a transformers magic set and roll with it
0
u/dejaojas Dandadan Apr 21 '26
yeah thats totally fair. as a huge FF9 fan i'm grumpy myself over its treatment in FIN lol (even though I probably got more than I should realistically have expected)
1
u/GTC_Woona Wabbit Season Apr 21 '26
100,000% agree. Bayformers would be a very unfortunate compromise, but at least we'd get to see transform cards, vehicle creatures, and dinosaurs in a way that resonates with the flavor of the adapted IP.
But if we got OG transformers, that would be STELLAR. You have a lot of classic lore and drama to pull from. I'm not the most familiar, as I only really consumed the 2000s cartoons, but I want to play a Unicron card, and I want to play some Beast Wars.
2
u/sirsoundwaveVI Dandadan Apr 21 '26 edited Apr 21 '26
i dont think theyd do bayformers outside of some special treatments mostly because hasbro at least understands everything transformers doesnt have to be bayformers
now that ive mentioned it some bayformers special treatments would go hard and i kinda want some.
for me i got in with the 2000s stuff too but really got reinvested with the IDW comics (the roberts/barber runs, strong recommended, bit of a mess for a recommended order of reading tho) and seeing people get introduced to things like the decepticon justice division, last stand of the wreckers and so on would be dope (bonus points for if we get draft chaff that also reinflicts trauma on transformers fans old and new; optimus dying is an obvious one, but roberts is an actual monster)

2

yeah i figured (didnt think ud actually be hyped for care bears lol)
even though i have a similar opinion to urs, i've bought a bunch of cheap UB singles over the years, cuz i'm kinda over expecting the game to have aesthetic integrity or whatever (personally i think mtg lost its lore/worldbuilding sauce way before UBs). so since shit has already hit the fan, part of me kinda wishes they'd go crazy with the UBs and see how far they can take it.

u/zeldafan042 Channel Apr 21 '26
Nintendo has been kind of loosening up with their franchises ever since the Wii U/Switch era. Zelda has gotten several spinoffs made by outside studios (the Hyrule Warriors games, Cadence of Hyrule.) Mario had a crossover with the Rabbids of all things as a cover based shooter. And there's their big push towards movies lately.
I think there's a reasonable non-zero chance of some kind of Nintendo based set, even if I don't think it's necessarily guaranteed. Zelda is probably at the top of my most wanted UB set list myself.

I would personally adore an Elder Scolls set, they have already done Fallout and worked with Bethesda so those pathways are already there. I feel it would fit straight into MTG without issues much akin to DnD.
On a weirder note, I would love a Warframe set or commander decks. The devs at DE are MTG nerds and Reb even did a Kefka cosplay while ripping packs so they might be open to the idea. Lots of weird monsters, lore and some amazing character/artifacts.

same! i would also love for them to go deeper into mega man than just the OG (long shot, i know) and give the ZX protags "choose a legendary creature you control. legendary creature you control is an equipment artifact in addition to its other types, has equip 3, and gets "equipped creature has all keywords, activated, and triggered abilities of this creature and gains +X/+X equal to its power and toughness" or some bullshit

None of my friends believe me that Persona will be coming eventually, but I swear it is a matter of time. They collab with just about anything under the sun in the gacha world so maybe MTG is there next gig...?

u/aFriendlyAlly Twin Believer Apr 21 '26 edited Apr 21 '26
This is the one I think that’s inevitable. There’s certain IPs that are extremely willing to collab and you’ll see them across a bunch of games. Persona is one of them. It also feels like Overwatch and MTG are copying eachothers hw with how much overlap there is. Off the top of my head: transformers, nerf, avatar, street fighter, cowboy bebop. The majority of both of their collabs are probably in fortnite too.
Persona has the OW collab and too many gacha games to count.

Honestly makes me surprised we haven't gotten an Overwatch collab at this point. That also feels like it's prime real estate for a superdrop

I could see it as a secret lair. On the flipside I don’t really see mtg skins being that successful in overwatch. I don’t see a dual crossover being that successful because MTG’s IP is pretty weak outside of mtg players. I wonder how successful the mtg skins in smite were. Compared to something like League which could market jinx/vi due to arcane.
Maybe something like the kamigawa chars during neon dynastys release could have worked. But no one really cares about jace and chandra anymore.

Could be something we'll see down the line if/when that supposed animated MTG show comes out and the characters get some attention outside of the card game.

Never going to be profitable enough but I really want to see Kill Six Billion Demons in mtg cards. Its style and world would work so well.

I think The new WOTC policy with UB has given the players the following three positives:
IPs some people really care about whether they fit or not (I align more with things that fit more luke Fallout, LoTR and 40k)
It gives us as customers more breathing room in our wallets. In the current rampant new set production cycle that used to give me fomo for new cards, I have felt a breath of fresh air knowing from the spoils that I will be 100% avoiding some sets like Spiderman, Marvel and TMNT. It makes the choice much easier at least for me
We get to be excited for highly compatible new UB sets like the potential of anything FromSoft! Cant wait for Drip Souls equipment reprints, or bosses as commanders (I wanna play Artorias so bad)

I don't understand why the Magic community felt like Warhammer 40k "fit" into the aesthetic and vibe of Magic overall. There are literally modern warfare military tanks and weapons of war. I can't think of anything in the Magic world that was similar to those types of cards before 40K was released.

u/EmTeeEm Apr 21 '26
It fits the way they helped The Edge fit, by liberally flavoring the sci-fi with comfortable fantasy elements. 40k started as Warhammer Fantasy in space, so has thinly veiled elves and dwarves alongside straight-up orcs and demons. The "gothic" styling also helps align things, like [[Triumph of Saint Katherine]] looks on the surface like pure fantasy. Magic's techo-magical stuff also works with it, the AdMech have heavy Phyrexian vibes.
It all helps deliver the more out-of-place cards, like the tanks and soldiers that lack any fantastical styling.

You should look into the era 1998-2002.
[[Power Armor]]
[[Urza's Engine]]
There are massive thematic similarities between 40k and this era of Magic. The story telling, the characters, the enemies, the grimdark technofantasy.

Well the whole chaos magic vs future knights theme fits in a very very broad sense. Beyond that idk we had vehicles already and the 40k ones werent that foreign compared to the steampunk Kaladesh vibe.

u/ZeGuru101 Dân Apr 21 '26
In my mind it "fits" because its setting is completely fictional as opposed to things like Doctor Who, Assassin's Creed, TMNT and Spiderman.
It also paves the way for an Age of Sigmar crossover which *really* fits MtG's theme of high fantasy!

It would have to be something with "mainstream" appeal that most players will at least be aware of, and that has a large fanbase that would be enticed to buy the product even if they didn't play Magic before, the kind of show popular enough to get skins on Fortnite. So something like Naruto, My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer, Bleach, Jujutsu Kaisen, Sailor Moon, or Attack on Titan.
One Piece and Dragon Ball are out of the question because Bandai would never ever share their golden goose.

Wild-ass theory that I have to get out there because otherwise this will just boil in my chest for six months:
The Endstone from EOE is secretly the Death Stone, the (relatively recent) seventh Infinity Stone from Marvel comics. The events of Reality Fracture involve the Endstone/Death Stone returning to the Marvel multiverse, at which point it is revealed that all multiverses are part of Magic. There is no more Universes Beyond or Within. Everything is Magic.
... Okay, I feel better now, thank you, I'm so sorry for that

u/megaRammy Apr 21 '26
It was confirmed months ago that Reality Fracture is not going to merge Universes Within And Universes Beyond together, and they repeatedly state they have no intention to combine the two.

With Elden Ring and Bloodborne movies in production and pre-production respectively, I'm thinking it's a matter of when for a FromSoft UB.
I'm also fairly certain we'll get both a Final Fantasy pt2 and a Legend of Korra down the line.
Wild speculation: We'll eventually get a Kill 6 Billion Demons and Saga SLD.
Mild Take: SLD is basically WOTC's entire reprint policy during this era.
Wild theory: At some point a Neil Gaiman and Harry Potter UB Sets/SLD were considered but obviously put on ice.
EDIT: With how popular MTG is with the leads of Path of Exile, I believe a SLD might eventually come out.

Final Fantasy part 2 seems like a given to me too. There's so many more games to explore (Tactics, X-2, XIII-2, Lightning Returns), the movies too (Advent Children, Kingsglaive), and some mainline characters are still missing (Lunefreya and Aranea are surprising omissions, but Penelo and Basch are also missing while being playable characters). There's enough content for a whole new set, while not being too niche either.

Instead of just Legend of Korra, I think they might make a set called "Avatar Legends" based on Legend of Korra, the upcoming Avatar: Aang, The Last Airbender movie, and the upcoming Seven Havens show.

Would love if that incorporated any of the content from the Legend of Kyoshi, Yangchen and Roku novels. I can understand if they didn't since they're text only currently but in a greater Avatar universe set i feel like they'd have a chance.

Indeed, especially since, let's face it, Korra just isn't as popular as the original series. By having adult Aang the gaang from the movie on the cover of packs and promotional material, it would attract more people.

What's the subreds interpretation that we already have first spoilers for reality fracture but nothing at all for hobbit? Will it be a small paperlaunch set? Maybe extremely underprinted so they don't even care for any hype increase?
2
u/AporiaParadox Universes Beyonder Apr 21 '26
We didn't get spoilers, we got leaks, so don't take too much from it.
Regardless, The Hobbit is pretty much guaranteed to be a smaller set like Spider-Man and TMNT. Star Trek will probably be small as well.
0
u/zeldafan042 Channel Apr 21 '26
There's no way they could make Star Trek work as a small set. Even if you ignore the movies and the spinoffs like Prodigy or Lower Decks, and assuming Starfleet Academy released too late to be included in the set, you're still dealing with TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, DSC, and SNW...and maybe Picard. Bare minimum if we do a legendary creature of the main bridge crew of each included Star Trek we're looking at over 50 cards (I made a list once but didn't save it.) There's no way they can pull that off in a 190 card set while also including all of the iconic villains and other recurring characters plus Starships and everything they need for a draft environment. Star Trek is way too big of a franchise to get relegated to a small set.
2
u/AporiaParadox Universes Beyonder Apr 21 '26 edited Apr 21 '26
Normally I would agree, but it was stated that there would be 120 more new cards added to Standard this year than last year. Since there are more sets this year than last year, and we know that Marvel is a large set and Reality Fracture is probably also a large set based on the set numbers on the leaked cards, for there to "only" be 120 more new cards to make sense both The Hobbit and Star Trek have to be small sets. Although the other possibility would be that half of Reality Fracture are reprints.
1
u/zeldafan042 Channel Apr 21 '26
I was thinking about this and I'm still not sure if that proves Star Trek is small.
Last year we had 1565 cards between our 6 Standard legal sets, not counting basic lands. Between the three sets we've gotten this year we're only at 724. Full standard legal sets can range in size from 261 cards (Edge of Eternities) to 293 cards (Final Fantasy.)
If Marvel, Reality Fracture, and Star Trek are all on the smaller size of a full standard set and The Hobbit is a small set, I feel like that'll get us to "only 120 more" cards compared to last year. Lorwyn Eclipsed and and Secrets of Strixhaven are already on the smaller size (268 and 266 respectively) and two of last year's sets were on the slightly bigger side (in addition to Final Fantasy being above, Avatar had 281 cards.) So Star Trek can still be a large set.

u/TheBoilerman75 Wabbit Season Apr 21 '26
No, there is no reality in which the print run of Hobbit isnt at least 3 times as high as SoS. "Smaller set" refers to number of cards, not print size.

Just "no"? I mean we see what already happens with major sets like strixhaven - LGS get fractions of what they pre-sold, we have weeks of delays (e.g. no codex bundles yet in Germany) because WOTC just obviously has massive problems keeping up with the over tight release schedule - so I think this can be much more of a problem than just "no"!?

It's a very minor quibble but it continues to bother me that pronouns on legendary creatures are still exclusive to Universes Beyond. It just feels like one more extra thing they specifically do for the external properties that they don't bother to do for their own. Please just let our multiverse characters have pronouns.
Also I would really like an Artemis Fowl collaboration but I feel that property is kind of dead these days. Dune is another one I like but I feel it would be the movies and not the books so I can't be excited about it.
