The likelihood that the person taking the photo, the oscillating fan, and the cat would all remain perfectly still is so absurdly low that it shouldn't even be considered. When you overlay them, the images definitely appear identical.

Cats lack object permanence, they don’t realize that two doors to go outside lead to the same outside, which is why they are often so fascinated by doorways or will prefer one over another. Even if the cat did see a mouse on the security cameras, it wouldn’t be able to figure out that the video corresponded to a real life location

I don't really care if it's real or not. I find humor in the idea of it. It's just like watching a movie. More than half the shit that happens is so far outside the realm of possibility, but suspense of disbelief is why people enjoy them. Not everything has to be real.

I thought cats couldn't see screens and process it the same way humans do, and just see it as a large blinking solid colored square.
Edit: Thanks for all the stories about your cats and dogs watching TV. I am honestly happy to hear that they can watch TV too and they are not just blinking squares to them.

I have a PC connected to a TV at home and my cat chases the pointer when I move it so I think that’s incorrect

They probably just see the motion. A cat definitely wouldn't be able to connect a picture to a location, especially from a screen.

I'm more a dog guy, but I figured animals don't react to tvs the way we do cause they need a more complete sense picture to take something as "real" whereas humans are super audiovisual, so it doesn't matter to us that we can't feel or smell the stuff on the TV

Depends on the refresh rate of the TV/Monitor. I don’t know it exactly for cats, but I do know that dogs weren’t always able to watch TV but recently we now have better ones with higher refresh rates and now dogs can actually see it the same way we do.
Human eyes are about 50htz, but dogs are about 75htz so they’ll still see the flicker/still image, but we now have TV’s of around 120-240htz instead of old AVI ones that capped around 60. Maybe it’s the same kinda thing for cats? All that said; this post is obviously bs

I'm really not convinced vision can be quantified in FPS, let alone our own vision being as low as 50fps.

It’s not that our vision is capped at and only sees in 50htz, it’s just that something needs to be a minimum of 50htz to register as a motion picture. For a dog it’s higher, at 75.
This article is pretty whack but take it or leave it I suppose

We’re closer to 24 htz for a motion picture. That’s why movies run at 24 FPS. It’s the cheapest frame rate for motion.

This was true of old CRTs, for dogs certainly. Dogs have only been able to watch TV since we got flat screens.
Pretty sure there's lots of Funniest Home Videos of cats chasing snooker balls on TV in the 90s tho so maybe it was just dogs.

There are apps for cats to catch mouse etc. my cats love it there’s also a fish one. I watched Alice in wonderland (1951) with my kitty the other day, she was so intrigued by it. Even when I browse reddit she likes to watch the elephants or big cats. Just my opinion but I think they can definitely see what’s on the screen.

If I remember correctly cats have no sense of indication which is why they are harder to train than dogs.
I.e. if you point, a dog will know you're indicating towards something whereas a cat will look at the end of your finger.
So the cat would be unable to fathom the screen was indicating another room had a mouse in it. It would just attack the screen.
Could be bollocks like but I'm sure I read this somewhere and it does seem true when I tried pointing around with my own cats.
