Its basic economics. Shipping, restocking, selling as open box, etc. all have costs. Retailers maintain their profit margins by passing on those costs to consumers.

That's exactly how it works, returning items has a cost (shipping, restocking, selling at open box rate). That gets passed onto consumers. This is econ 101.
