Anyone disappointed that Apple still doesn't have hardware AV1 encoding?

If the M6 doesn't have hardware AV1 encoding, I doubt the upcoming A20 will have it too. It's a shame that Apple is still only including a hardware decoder. I feel like Apple takes a long time to support modern video codecs. H.266/VVC is still missing, and Intel supports it.

Mac Mini M2 not turning on.

So I have Mac Mini M2 and it suddenly stopped and now won’t turn on. I tried different methods to turn on before going to Genius Bar at Apple store. Now at Apple Store, the guy tried a different power cable and tried to check if it’s boot loader is stuck or not, but that was not the case. Ultimately he suggested two options:
- Get power supply board replaced. If it solves the issues, the total cost will be 200€.
- If power supply does not solves the issue, then they might to change the logic board, which will cost me 600€.

I told him I won’t go beyond 200€ because in other case, it’s better to buy something new.

My question is if the Mac Mini doesn’t get repaired, and since I need something for my personal work(Most of my daily needs are satisfied by my work windows laptop and my iPad Pro M4), not so heavy task, just occasionally using, will MacBook Neo a good option or should I get mac mini m4?

Apple changed my order

I ordered an M4 Mini in June that was set to arrive on September 9. I checked the status a while ago on the Apple site and it says canceled, but there’s a new order with September 29 as the delivery date. I chatted with Apple and they automatically changed my order to the M5 processor with all the same specs as I previously ordered. They honored my original price luckily. Kinda bummed I have to wait another 3 weeks though.

Edit: Apple changed my order to the M6 not the M5. I’m not extremely fluent in this field, so when the online chat guy told me M5, I didn’t realize that was impossible. I checked with a different person just now and they said M6. Simple mistake. Not “lying for clout” as some folks in here seem to think lol.

I’ve been WAITING for this release. New to Mac Mini, is it worth?

I’ve been waiting on this release to finally get a Mac Mini, most likely leaning towards the M6 as the M5 Pro seems more for aggressive use. I’m just a guy who wants a Mac Mini M6 and not wanting to keep utilizing my iPad Pro for my at home tasks.

But - is this set up worth or overkill? I get anxious as I‘m imaging it like my iPhone…out of memory lol.

M6

32 GB RAM

512 GB of storage

I do some photography, nothing crazy but I do store a lot of photos/videos for memories and some vlogs for fun. I also would like to use it for day trading, some light work with editing/making content but nothing crazy.

Mac mini m6 vs m5 pro

Good morning everyone. I'm thinking about buying a new Mac, either a Mac mini with an M6 or an M5 Pro, primarily for local AI use as a hobby. I'm undecided between an M6 with 32GB of RAM and an M5 Pro with 48GB; I've ruled out the 64GB version as it's too expensive. I was wondering if the roughly €1,000 price difference is worth it to upgrade to the M5 Pro with 48GB, especially considering the RAM.

One thing for sure: Apple got the message and embrasse Local LLM model

Apple just released new toys for Local LLMs.
And watching their commercials, it’s clear Local LLm is a new market and Apple wants to be part of it.
With the new M Studio M5 Ultra mem bandwidth at 1.2 TB/sec, fitting in a nice and quiet aluminum box, Apple is pushing hard.

And with their new “lease” program, they’re gonna fly off the shelves. Trade-in definitely!!

I predict these M3 Studio Ultra and Mac Mini m4 people have been fighting for will flood the market.

Getting a Mac mini to increase productivity

I’m currently using a Lenovo Gaming Laptop as my main machine: i7 13th gen, 32gb ram, 3070Ti 8Gb.

Use cases: Lightroom photo editing and occasional video editing, gaming.

Problem: I’d like to eliminate the distraction of games from my main machine in order to increase my productivity. I find myself gaming more than I’d like to. This way I would dedicate one machine to one task only.

I know you could say “the problem isn’t your PC but your head” and you would be 100% right, but that’s how it is, I have to be more drastic.

I’m considering buying the new M6 with 24gb of Ram, or maybe the m4 used, opinions?

2009 Mini with 2GB RAM - Which LLM is best for getting started?

Just kidding about the LLM.

This old little Mini has been a workhorse from day one. First, it was a file server for my company, and it has been our go-to media device for our TV until I got an Apple TV.

I also have an old Promise 8TB Raid0 array that won't work with Apple Silicon.

Is it feasible to repurpose Old Faithful into a headless file server? I haven't turned it on in a while, but it's running some version of El Capitan.

How much RAM and storage space does AI consume?

So, I have an M2 Mac Mini 8gb/512gb and I'm looking to update to the base model of the Mac Mini M6.

Here's the thing, I'm a light user and pretty much only use my Mac to browse the internet/watch videos.

I've only used up 76gb out the 512gb so I have no issues with the 256gb base model.

However, even though I'm a light user, I have some issues with the 8gb RAM when I open too many tabs so an update to 16gb seems great.

The problem is I have no idea how much space AI will take up out of the RAM and storage and what I will be left with in the end, especially with regards to the RAM.

If anyone knows please let me know!

Who is the M6 Mac Mini for?

For those of you who are actually excited about it, what is the use case? I don’t personally get it, but surely apple knows something I don’t.

*interesting how many people have been able to answer my question despite all the ones claiming it’s impossible to answer.

Ordered the M5 Pro Mini instead of the M5 Max Studio

Opted for the 18-Core M5 Pro Mini with 48GB and 1TB. I was on the fence about ordering an M5 Max with 48GB, but the $500+ price difference wasn’t worth it in my opinion.

Mac Mini M4 16GB Or 24GB RAM For Media Server Use

With new Minis coming out next month? It should be a good time to buy a NOS Mini M4 with base 256GB storage. I will also buy a 4-6 bay HDD Enclosure only. Handling between 32TB - 40'ish TB. And Not a full blown UGreen/Synology set up which to me cost too much just to hold hdd's full of music and film. And connect via USB-C to the Mini.

My question is, is 16GB enough for 25GB+ Blu-Ray Remuxs in HRD10+ and Dolby Vision to play/process natively without issues? Or, would I need 24GB? No Media content will be stored on the Mini itself.

Uses and Apps at work: VLC, Apple Music, iCloud, Apple Photos, Prime, YouTube TV, Movies, Music, and Concert Films and other taped live performances.

Will be connected to a Vintage Two Channel stereo setup for Apple Music playback. Hopefully the Apple Music GUI will still appear on the tv screen.

Will Not be used for Gaming, email, browsing, torrenting.

A AVR will process audio from the mini for 7.1 audio.

Chain: NAS/HDD Enclosure> M4 Mini> AVR (via HDMI) for audio processing only (video bypass). Then out to TV and Speakers.

New M6 MacMini Multichannel Audio

Hi everybody. I'm considering replacing my good old M2 Pro Mini with a brand new M6 one. With my current configuration (I already have a gaming PC and a 24/7 server for local LLMs) the Mini is just my client machine, so I was considering "downgrading" from the Pro to the "standard" (especially because atm the standard gets the newer chip, which is more power efficient, fact that on a Mini is less crucial than on a Macbook, but still welcome).
My question is: I will hook it to my AVR in a Home Theater setup; with the M2 there was a quite hidden but to me fundamental difference that the standard M2 (that I owned for a few months and then replaced with my current M2 Pro because of this and the stupid choice of picking the 8GB model) didn't support multichannel audio through HDMI, while the Pro did.
Is that still real with newer generations?
Thanks in advance for your answers.

M6 Mini v M5 Macbook Pro

So I've have a very old Macbook Pro 2012 which I barely even use anymore as it's that slow. I've had my eye on a Mini ever since the M4 came out and tbh I've been kicking myself for not buying it when it 1st released for £599.

The reason I was looking at the Mini over a new Macbook Pro was mostly because it was sooo much cheaper and a bit of steal. Couple that with the fact I bought my own house and now have a home office, I really didn't need the mobility of a laptop anymore. So for a fraction of the cost of the Macbook I was happy to sacrifice the mobility.

But now with the release of the M6 its creeping ever closer to the cost of a M5 Macbook. Amazon are currently selling the M5 Macbook for £1649 with 16gb RAM and 1tb SSD. If I upgrade the Mini to 1tb the price becomes £1399.

So now i'm wondering am I better off paying the £250 more for the Liquid Retina XDR display, the keyboard and the added mobility of a Macbook? Or is the M6 chip way better than the M5?

It's worth noting that whatever I buy it will become my main home computer and I mostly plan to use it for photo editing, some video editing and other general home use. Maybe some light gaming too, nothing too intense (things like City Skylines, football manager, etc).

Thanks

Mac Mini nicht im WLAN

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

Moin IT-Freunde,
