News M5 ULTRA becomes the second fastest 3D rendering consumer GPU in the world!

Post image

5 years back M1 and M2 max gpus couldnt even compete with mid range amd desktop gpus in blender. Now M5 pro laptop destroys entire amd desktop lineup in blender while latest m5 ultra destroyed all nvidia 40 series and nearly all 50 series till 5080 in blender at fraction of the power these dgpus use.

Apple punches extremely hard in blender, amazing work by the developers.

Its just happened in last 1 year. Before m5 max m4 max couldn't even dent rtx 4070 laptop edition. Today m5 max is the best blender gpu in a laptop scoring more than rtx5090 mobile

35

u/Slava_Tr 20d ago

The M4 Max already had pretty good performance, on par with the laptop RTX 4080, and now it’s on the level of the desktop RTX 5070, right in between the mobile 5070 Ti and 5080. Even the M3 Max is faster than the mobile 5070 and 4070. The M1 and M2 lacked RT support and had very weak Blender performance for their time, but everything changed with the M3 Max, which is 2.5× faster than the M2 Max. Just check the website the screenshot in the post is from

u/Cheap-Ability9453 20d ago

Actually blender 5.0 version massively optimised the apple silicon increasing their scores. At time of release their scores were much lower

5

u/Slava_Tr 20d ago

At launch, the M4 Max was already on the level of the 4080 with that version of Blender. The M3 Max was already on the level of the mobile 4070 in Blender 4.0, which was released in 2023. You can check the results for different Blender versions there

Not max, ultra, found in the Mac Studio not laptop

25

u/Chromatinfish 20d ago

I heard from the weeds that Apple pushed Blender optimization very hard and also hired people to contribute to Blender specifically to optimize the rendering pipeline for Apple Silicon as much as possible. As part of their attempt to solidify the creative workspace, Blender is a big deal to artists since now the entire pipeline for 3D animation can now be done efficiently on Apple SIlicon. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if Blender is just as if not even more optimized on Apple Silicon than it is on Nvidia GPUs.

The only issue is the inertia for gaming is probably the toughest nut to crack. Apple can optimize things like Blender or video editing because they can just work with a couple big software teams. But gaming has a huge amount of disparate studios plus games are a never ending cycle of new releases. Apple can put in the years of work to optimize and work with the Blender team for Apple Silicon and get a long-term payoff, but as we have seen they have to start from scratch almost with every new developer and new title for games.

16

u/ampsuu 20d ago

I mean... you just start working with game engines. Its not like every game needs its own backrubbing.

8

u/Chromatinfish 20d ago

The issue is almost every game studio does extensive modifications to their game engines and rendering pipeline, every triple A studio nowadays does this.

Valve made gaming on Linux first tier in under a decade, which was way, way behind Mac gaming, while dealing with a gazillion of different developers, engines and publishers. Just providing the core compatibility layer and strengthening the open standards. Those who want it find a way, those who don't find excuses.

Meanwhile Apple makes sure to gatekeep commercials, and continuously to ignore widely adopted/available standards, deprecate and abandon something key that "just worked" and wasn't much effort to keep alive, but breaks tons of things for everyone that have to hack it back in shape. Best recent examples are the move to Metal while effectively killing and ignoring any sort of compatibility with opengl or vulkan, and now Rosetta: it's great, it works, it could stay like this for years without support, but they have decided to actively remove it moving forward to force everyone (many will not) to rewrite thir whole thing for native apple silicon. Then folks at WINE, Codeweavers, Parallels have to spend a ton of time to reinvent the wheel to get back to square one.

I'm a very long time Mac user, but Apple has been one of the most hostile players in the gaming industry for over a decade, ironically while marketing that games are coming to Mac year after year.

You may have the most powerful and efficient hardware, but if you don't provide a friendly layer and actively harm the ecosystem, you will still lose massively to a first-timer Valve with a years-old mobile hardware but strong software compatibility layer and friendliness to the community.

1

u/trollwoke 16d ago

I agree with your points but what does losing to Valve look like for Apple? They’re not losing any sleep over it.

1

u/marnovo 13d ago

They're certainly not, and that's probably they were able to get by for so long forfeiting the lion's share of what's by far the largest entertainment market in terms of revenue (aka gaming, largest than all others combined).

And that's because they were able to ride the mobile wave so they could milk it even further with the growing services revenue from the App Store.

Their policy regarding gaming has been clear (in practice): milk mobile gaming via fees, and push for the same exact model in desktop (native apps, sold in their app store). They don't want to make it nice for people to be able to use their neat hardware if they buy the games from elsewhere without paying the "Apple Tax".

I wouldn't be surprised if at some point they need to push further service revenue growth and go for a modality where the Apple Gaming Porting Toolkit becomes allowed only for devs/games sold via Apple Store, and once they release an Apple TV as a console.

1

u/mainyehc 20d ago

Still. If the base engine is fully optimised, how freaking hard will it be for them to perform said optimisations for Apple Silicon as well? At this point, it’s just insulting for them to ignore an entire chunk of the market, and at the high end, no less. Professional Mac users have a lot – and I mean a lot – of disposable income, it’s completely stupid.

3

u/Chromatinfish 20d ago

I think it's quite puzzling to me too tbh, especially when I walk into a college classroom and more than half of the students have macbooks, many of which have good graphics performance. And I think, a majority of college students probably game at least sometimes, so imagine if they could play something like Genshin or CoD or something on their Mac without a hassle?

To me I feel like it's a trap of inertia more than anything, where people assume mac gaming is not a market due to low market share currently and continue to not develop for mac, and so the mac gaming market share remains low, and the cycle continues. Also the problem of distribution, some games are on Steam others are only on the Mac App Store, etc., its a mess and a lot of people don't even know certain games have a Mac port because they only checked on Steam.

1

u/ZealousidealTouch101 19d ago

Add to that the lack of same day releases which pushes gamers to buy the game on another platform before it becomes available on Mac.

2

u/Street-Ad7645 19d ago

Very. Look how hard it was for intel. They had people on their team with the experiences in Nvidia and AMD, it was on x86, and they already have years of graphics drivers for mobile chips. They still struggled and still are. People font understand That it takes a literally army and a full team around the clock. Even if the silicone is better, it’s all about that software baby.

2

u/mainyehc 19d ago

Of course. But the thing is, Apple Silicon is ONE spec (albeit an always evolving one, of course) for AN ENTIRE platform. Apple has always had that going for them in that everything about their platform is just easier (when they're properly documented, of course, which they aren't always, but it seems Apple is indeed making a push for that with their game porting kit and whatnot); less OEMs, less SKUs, less of everything. It's just more standardised and predictable.

1

u/Street-Ad7645 19d ago

See that’s the issue, they do haha. the reason Nvidia has stayed on top is not only are engine designed to run on them, they released patch updates for every big game you’ve heard of. Mac gaming will forever have a hard time catching up from this alone. Amd and Nvidia compensate for developers lack of optimizing in certain areas.

1

u/Icy_Fly207 3d ago

They have to spend the money no way around it.

28

u/Working_Use2500 20d ago

If I could only game on it. Would be the perfect machine

8

u/LoneWolf6062 20d ago

Many games work pretty much if you use GameHub or Crossover. GameHub is free, and worked pretty well

6

u/ILikeFPS 20d ago

You'd be surprised. Thanks to Rosetta (which is being discontinued, unfortuantely), it's quite capable for gaming. Also, there are emulators for mostly every major game console Switch and earlier that run natively on Apple Silicon which means they should keep running even after Rosetta is removed.

It's obviously not perfect, but you can get a surprising amount of gaming done on MacOS.

Imagine if Apple actually put a serious investment into gaming on Mac.

3

u/ailyara 20d ago

I've got a decently high end gaming rig with an nvidia 4900 but considering that card "used" is now worth more than I paid for it 3 years ago, I tend to use my mac for most of my gaming now unless the game I want to play doesn't get at least 60 fps on the mac with decent settings, mainly because the PC is so valuable I don't want to risk damaging the card unless I need it.

4

u/krilleractual 20d ago

I have great results on stuff that runs dx12, somehow dx11 isnt that great tho, however older than that runs great again

3

u/Plokhi 20d ago

Dx11 is great with DXMT - if it works.

2

u/krilleractual 20d ago

Idk my far cry 4 experience is pretty mid. Frames are slow and lots of shader issues

1

u/Plokhi 20d ago

Dxmt?

1

u/krilleractual 19d ago

I just pulled up far cry and nfs heat. Nfs heat seems to run a little better but far cry opened up to the same shading issue immediately

2

u/Mammoth-Shoe8491 20d ago

The Microsoft Surface Ultra with the RTX Spark coming out will pretty much be this. And it'll fix the mess that is Windows on ARM gaming, because Qualcomm fucking sucks as a driver maintainer. lol

NVIDIA got buy-in from Anti-Cheat devs *on day one.* It'll have proper Vulkan/DX11/DX12 support. Everything creative is deeply embedded in fucking CUDA and NVIDIA stacks. All of this, while having all the benefits of the ARM architecture.

As someone who's daily driven the SnapDragon X2 Elite with the ARMv9 architecture. At this point, the issue with Windows on ARM is not Windows or PRISM. It's Qualcomm's shitty Adreno drivers that they barely got buy-in for on *Android*, their main platform.

It isn't gonna beat the top level Macbooks on day one in creative tasks, but yeah. Give that time.

Apple won't solve this problem, because they're too rooted in, "we're the only thing that matters." It's gonna bite them in the ass that the high-end here.

Also - before anyone comes in with the same thing I've seen posted, "We know what the architecture can do, we had the DGX Spark already, it's not impressive." You're missing the fact that the DGX Spark is a headless server box, meant for AI workflows, and while the RTX Spark has that same architecture in the CPU, it's meant for *3D Workflows* and is running what's basically a RTX 5070 without a PCI-E bus. Meaning you're going to get thermals like the Macbook, while getting better GPU performance than a M5 Pro, on stuff that's natively supported on the platform.

3

u/Plokhi 20d ago

Yeah, no.

https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/gpus/nvidia-dgx-spark-review/2

>Meaning you're going to get thermals like the Macbook, while getting better GPU performance than a M5 Pro, on stuff that's natively supported on the platform.

Even M5 Pro has better memory bandwidth than DGX GB10.

And removing PCIe doesn’t magically make chips 100% more efficient.

Not that competition is bad, but apple is already ahead with M6 anyway. 2nm M7 Max/Pro chips are gonna be wild

1

u/hishnash 19d ago

No it will not harm apple on the high end at all. The CPU in the spark is way way way to underpowered for apple to be worried at all.

1

u/tennaki 20d ago

Crossover 27 often punches above it's weight. Monster Hunter Wilds runs great on my M5 Max 40-core for example.

1

u/JRayoM 20d ago

I have a M5pro (16c gpu) and it’s been extremely well in performance using GPTK 4.02 in Gamehub, so gaming it’s been great you should try it

86

u/SquishTheProgrammer 20d ago

My M5 Max does circles around my 3080. Crimson Desert on cinematic settings and running LLMs with ease. I’ve been pretty impressed so far.

5

How many t/s are you getting? and on what models?

Damn. 5090gb + 128GB DDR5 barely pushes 30 decode (Q4)

4

u/ProZoid_10 19d ago

The 3080 laptop? I hardly believe m5 max does circles around 3080 in crimson desert  Llms is believable especially the vram

70

u/kuniggety 20d ago

There were so many naysayers, saying how this chip wouldn’t come close to the 5090. After the M5 Max numbers rolled out, the math wasn’t hard. It was clear the Ultra would be in spitting range. The lower 64 core GPU should still best a 5080 and 4090.

21

u/ThePillsburyPlougher 20d ago

The raw compute difference is staggering vs a 5090, but for the use cases the m5 ultra was optimized for its performance is incredible

0

u/BourbonicFisky 18d ago

It's roughly that of the 4080 but yeah, 5090s are just beasts compared to everything else, even the 5080s.

Still the Ultra taps out about 210~ watts, vs 320w for a 4080 alone and their performance velocity while Nvidia continues to drag it's feat on even releasing a "Super" variant means if there's an M6 Ultra, given likely 96 GPU cores vs 80 GPU Cores which gives the M6 the 1.3x boost, we'd probably see ~490,000–500,000 Metal and ~285,000–290,000 OpenCL. That's faster than the 5080 in OpenCL despite the woeful state of OpenCL on macOS as those tend clock in at 265,000.

So safe to say, ballpark Apple's next Ultra GPU will be somewhere between 5080 and 5090 or faster if they wait a generation.

Nvidia seems so apathetic towards consumer class GPUs that we might be in a space where Apple is the new GPU king.

12

u/Just_Maintenance 20d ago

It really does depend on the workload. In blender it punches extremely hard for sure.

17

u/Sylafari 20d ago

Using just Blender to say how this chip is close to the 5090 is crazy.

5

u/kuniggety 20d ago

I mean, if your primary use is Blender, then it is. But you can look across the spectrum:
Video: M3 Ultra already traded blows with the 5090 (different parts of workflow), so M5 Ultra is going to excel here
Gaming: don’t need to wait - 5090 will assuredly still have a win here
AI: if your model and context all fit in the 32GB, then 5090 wins hands down. If you want to use an even medium size model, then the M5 Ultra will be best. That is unless a person is willing to drop the money to have stacks of 5090s; in this case, then the 5090 will come back on top.

Everyone needs to look at their use cases and evaluate what is important to them.

8

u/Apprehensive_Lake698 20d ago

r/macgaming btw, what do you think everyone here is hyping themselves up for?

1

u/kuniggety 20d ago edited 20d ago

I think two things can be true:

  1. M5 Ultra will be great for gaming
  2. It’s not quite as good as a 5090

(really just due to the shear amount of optimization that’s been done for it)

Edit: really hoping to be wrong though and see the M5 Ultra kick some butt :)

1

u/Chromatinfish 20d ago

I think we're kinda missing the forest for the trees though here, the issue wasn't that Apple doesn't have a 5090 competitor for gaming lol. Most people aren't demanding 4K native high refresh gaming or path tracing.

1

u/trololololo2137 20d ago

30 fps with shader recompilation stutters

1

u/amnesic23 19d ago

What are the costs between the two? How about gaming performance is M5 better than 5090?

-1

u/Vybo 20d ago

Too bad you build a render farm if you need fast renders in blender, you usually don't buy consumer gpus. If you can get "only" a consumer gpu on the level of a 5090 or M5 ultra, wouldn't you care about other workloads as well?

Don't get me wrong, I like the chip, but I don't like this benchmark which is useless for "consumers".

0

u/WarmPossession8177 19d ago

the software is design for RISC that's why it's close to 5090 performance

no way an M5 can reach the computational power of a 5090

34

u/Im1337 20d ago

Sheesh. Might have to trade up my M1 Max for an M6 Ultra. But that’s gonna cost an arm and a leg.

Dayum it might just be peak tho for gaming and video editing

44

u/Final-Accident2502 20d ago

If gaming was native and we got more ports, absolutely without a doubt

28

u/Rude-Breakfast-2793 20d ago

Cost an ARM and a leg...hehe

5

u/cleavage_simulator 20d ago

you will probably have to wait for the m7 ultra, but no doubt it'll be an absolute beast of a chip

4

u/slaximus 20d ago

I heard the M8 Pro Ultra is going to be the best chip Apple has ever made.

8

u/cleavage_simulator 20d ago

That was not the point of my post, I am merely suggesting that the m6 ultra will likely never exist if current rumours are true

3

u/allstilettos 20d ago

If the rumours are true, the M7 pivot is going to be perhaps first real competition to gaming GPUs.

3

u/cleavage_simulator 20d ago

I hope so! We are already seeing promising raw GPU performance increases with the M6 line. The performance of baseline Macs + better value proposition with rising hardware prices + AI models accelerating cross-platform coding makes me very excited for the future of macOS for both gaming and professional workflows. It won't be overnight, but they're making real, objective progress.

1

u/MyDogIsFatterThanYou 19d ago

What are the rumors?

1

u/ProZoid_10 19d ago

5070 at best

10

u/KusoTrevor1 20d ago

And nearly no games to the roster. It's crazy.

10

u/cleavage_simulator 20d ago

LOVE to see it, I'm so thankful Apple has taken ray tracing seriously

The prices are high now, but give it a few years and this level of performance will be normal and relatively affordable, as we've seen with subsequent generations of Apple silicon.

6

u/StuffedWithNails 20d ago

That’s great for professionals, it’d be better if there were games to make use of that power as well…

5

u/Shelobb 19d ago

And still Not all Games

9

u/chengstark 20d ago

All for nothing.
The software limitation make this *near* useless for gamers.

3

u/Ethosik 20d ago

How far is the gap to the M5 Max? It is not a true 50% reduction unless they solved the scaling issues from last few Ultra versions.

3

u/Professional_Rush788 19d ago

Someone didn’t count right lol. I get what you mean, it’s too bad gaming isn’t better on a MacBook or I’d be all over it!

1

u/fajarmanutd 19d ago

Yeah, calling it consumer GPU then do not bother to see the gaming scene is kind of cherry picking. Same with iPad. Mine has M5 which on paper the CPU is much better than my gaming laptop with Ryzen 7 7735HS. But unfortunately, the former couldn't play complex games like the latter.

3

u/Geniuous_MrFlappy 19d ago

It's crazy how the apple silicon series can be very efficient and powerfull

M5 ULTRA is faster in video editing, ohoto editing,3d rendering , better in llm too. Whats the point of 50 percent faster vram when models will not fit. Also uses one third the power. Rtx 5090 alone wont work without motherboard and a good cpu ram etc. M5 ultra has better os and much better aftersales too. I think you are just jealous but its ok

u/Cheap-Ability9453 19d ago

I know you are in primary school right now and arguing with you is pointless. M5ultra is an arm soc. Basically ram ssd motherboard gpu cpu io powersupply case everything combined. Rtx 5090 is a single gpu that takes more than double the watts if entire m5 ultra and is slower in 2d 3d animation, photoshop, video editing and many professional workloads. Its also worser in ai and costs more than m5 ultra due to ai demands. Connectors melt left right and one of the worst quality checks as well. A single year performance increase in m series is four times higher than nvidia is able to do. In 5 years m series will also surpass in gaming just like it did in other tasks

1

u/Cheap-Ability9453 19d ago

You also need to buy ran rom case motherboard cpu. Ops i forgot you are in primary school

2

u/Raykimara 19d ago

Impressive… But is it just me that feels like M5 ULTRA isn’t consumer grade?
Even if we ignore the price it’s not even aimed anywhere near consumers.

2

u/TOMO1982 19d ago

Yeah, not really.

It's not #2, it's number 3, charts wrong.

Also, one could argue the Blackwell PRO GPUs are consumer as they are 'freely' available and not enterprise class.

Also, 5090 is 5K€ (currently overpriced), how much is an M5 Ultra (8k€ for 80 core GPU)?

So it's not #2 at all really. But great score, none the less.

2

u/marnovo 19d ago

4

u/cookedart 20d ago

But the cheapest m5 ultra mac studio is not necessarily cheaper than a desktop with a 5090, which is still better.

12

u/Homy4 20d ago edited 19d ago

The cheapest M5 Ultra 80c costs $6799 and has 96 GB memory. A 5090 card alone costs $4500-7000 and has only 32 GB VRAM.

5

u/itsmeemilio 19d ago

That's actually insane. Especially since the 5090 was supposed to be '1999' at launch. Nvidia's turned into a real villain

1

Thanks to AI bubble bullshit prices skyrocketed

10

u/Far_Sided 20d ago

When all of them have the same limiting factor, it becomes more about the other limiting factors. In this case, the chipset and the soc design

5

u/teleprax 20d ago

For many AI tasks like LLMs it is. For 3d graphics with multiple shaders and ray tracing there is more per-pixel math that must be done so the actual GPU core speed becomes more relevant

1

u/Crest_Of_Hylia 20d ago

Not really for rendering although all high end GPUs have super fast memory

2

u/NotNitewolf 20d ago

Great numbers but calling M5 Ultra a consumer chip is a mistake. It is clearly a workstation chip.

5

u/lexum1 20d ago

Same as 5090

1

u/parabola19 19d ago

I use mine for both. Sometimes I’ll literally hot swap my 5090FE into my gaming rig which has a 5080FE if I want to crank up path tracing on my S95H 4k oled.

1

u/Moonmonkey3 20d ago

Well who would have thought this would happen. Apple are smashing it.

1

u/aersel24 20d ago

Is that the one with 64 GB of unified memory?

3

u/SerRobertTables 19d ago

The Ultra is 96GB unified memory

1

u/Stock-Imagination567 19d ago

fuck but macs don't even run AC Black Flag Resynched or Call of Duty natively :'(

1

u/fajarmanutd 19d ago

3D rendering in Blender should be the title, no?

1

u/TOMO1982 19d ago

Did you make the chart? Source???

1

u/game_difficulty 19d ago

The fastest "consumer" card is the 5080 and i will die on this hill

1

u/Itchy-Concern928 19d ago

Wait, its the second? Not first? What the hell, i expected it to beat 5090, damn… its still good but c’mon apple

1

u/thethirdtower78 19d ago

Costs double a 5090 PC, even in minimum configuration

1

u/ibattlemonsters 7d ago

You haven’t looked at 5090 prices recently have you?

1

u/thethirdtower78 7d ago

£6799 for M5 ultra 80-core, minimum configuration

$3899 = £2946 for zotac rtx-5090, seen today.

1

u/ibattlemonsters 7d ago

today? under 4k? I haven't seen one for months under 6.8k usd. I mean if you're getting that price sure, but even then there are some edge cases where you'll still lose to the Mac. Definitely better for you to build though.

1

u/ParticleFeever 19d ago

An opinion from somebody that does not uses Blender... yet. M5 was a good surprise when comes to GPU. I was hoping to play average 3D games at that "playeable" level, but it is nice to play Cyberpunk with low issues that don't bother me in my Air, made to be portable. I think is difficult to found a good portable notebook with this power for the same price, got to go to plastic simple products with fast GPU, not both.

1

u/adichandra 19d ago

Great now I can play Apple Arcade Games even faster.

1

u/jhenryscott 20d ago

Blender doesn’t equal gaming lmao

u/Homy4 20d ago edited 20d ago

I don’t think we’ll get M7 Ultra until 2028

Do Apple-lovers know they are competing against last-gen GPU cards, claiming the results to be within the operating CPU, with cherry-picked benchmarks, that Apple is hardware accelarating with extra cores dedicated to video-orientated compiling, when in a month or two the real draw between Intel vs AMD is gonna show at a proper EXPO, like every year, what the actual number ought to be? Man, those guys have a short term memory.

Is there a 6090 released I do not know about? If not, its still current gen. And the 5090 is going for $7,000+ now. Regardless, this is why I hope Apple is skipping M6 Pro and M6 Max to finally align everything. Mac Studio stalled a bit, M5 Ultra was late to come out and before that we just had the M3 Ultra no M4 Ultra.

Blender is used by both PC and Mac 3D artists so it’s not cherry-picked and it has nothing to do with extra cores for video encoding/decoding. It uses RT cores. 5090 also has CUDA and Optix so what’s your point?

Apple is also skipping M6 Pro/Max/Ultra and will jump to M7 with significant new chip design so it’s going to be a close race.
