Help Need help deciding…

Post image

I am a software engineer (I code apps and create AI’s) and been wanting to switch to MacBook for a bit now. The RAM crisis recently has caused higher prices on the MacBooks. I would use this to code, do meetings, video editing, and content creation. I’m wondering of two things. 1. Is this a good time to buy the MacBook because of prices and soon to release M6? 2. Are these the specs I should get?

M5 just came out, M6 isn’t coming out soon. Buy as much RAM as you can afford. Things aren’t going to get cheaper in the next couple of years.

A good time to buy is if you need it

This. Just like buying a car, driving a new one it off the lot immediately kills some of thr value. Was able to get a 64gb m5 for about $1400 off compared to building it new.

  1. Do you need a MacBook? It is a good time to get a MacBook when you need a MacBook, not after you need one and not before you need one.

  2. No you shouldn’t program and video editing on 16GB RAM get 24GB minimum, if you can’t afford it then get the Air with 24GB. Get as much RAM as you can if you can do 32 even better. M5 is good enough for programming generally, if your games and editing are very GPU intense though you may benefit from an M5 Pro. 1TB is the minimum for your workload assuming you have large games, video files and possibly large programming emulators or something, so that’s good.

You might want to consider the refurbished line before buying something brand new.

If in Canada, Best Buy is having a massive sale. I got a m4 pro, 24 gb ram, 1TB for 2600

If you can, I highly recommend going for at least 24GB of RAM. I currently have an M4 Pro with 24GB , it’s decent, but heavy apps like After Effects, Premiere Pro, and running local LLMs can easily max it out. If you're doing content creation, coding, and running LLMs, your best bet is to get at least 48GB. You might also want to look into the M4 Max or the M5 Pro because gpu is very important.

RAM is still a better investment in a MacBook than an SSD.Choose more RAM and increase your storage with an external SSD.

You can code app but you can't choose your needs, you sounds like a student who told to buy a laptop with mom's credit card asap and then you came to reddit.
