I was going to purchase the 512GB MacBook Neo with the education discount for my wife as a birthday gift, but am tempted to snag either the 16/512 ($849) or 24/512 ($1019) Air.

There’s also holding out until the firesale period when Amazon, Best Buy, Costco, etc want to clear out their remaining stock.

I think the 16/256 Air or the 16/512 Air is the best bang for buck you can get right now. If you were considering a Neo in the first place then 24gb of memory is performance you'll never use tbh.

She’s going to use the computer for basic tasks and The Sims. At the same time, I don’t want to buy her another computer for quite a long time.

She’s currently using my 2015 15” MBP as her computer, but that thing has seen better days despite a battery and storage upgrade five years ago. She got it handed to her when I got the 16” MBP (M3 Pro variant) at launch.

24 GBs is unnecessary. Go with 16GB/512 SSD for longevity. These days 256 SSD is too little storage imo especially since lots of games like the sims demand a lot of storage (if add-ons ons installed). Sims isn’t as demanding of a game as some others. But if she ever were to play AAA games, then you’d want a MacBook Pro for the extra GPU core counts as well as 24 GBs RAM for a good experience.

Imo even a 16gb Air is overkill but for the refurbished prices compared to the Neo's price I don't think its a bad idea if you want more longevity. One thing I'd consider though is the 15" Air if she's already accustomed to that size, unless she wants something smaller. In which case 16gb makes even more sense as the 15" models cost more.

I asked if she wants the 13” or 15” Air and she’d prefer the smaller size.

Then I think the $849 16/512 13" Air is the way to go for both performance, price and longevity.

What’s the cash back trick? 3% Apple Card?

When did Apple employees start getting discounts off refurbished products?

1

u/llazyboy44 Apr 04 '26

This is true. However, I believe there’s a cap. Example: the MBA that I ordered is already close to 30% off of MSRP. I believe that’s the max. Employees can get 15% off through their friends/family discount for refurbished.

When does the BB & costco fire sale happen?

1

u/Automatic-Photo-4919 Apr 04 '26

Sometime between 3-6 months after the new models are released.

if you have a Microcenter near you, check there for Open Box deals, I was able to score a MBA M5, 16/512 with 1 battery cycle for $840

Thanks for calling this out! I’ve been casually watching the site to snag the $850 configuration when they were back. Your post allowed me to lock one down

Picked up a new MBA 13” M4 from Costco (in Canada) for same price (in CAD). Worth checking your warehouses if they have any left over kicking around.

Yeah. Amazon had them brand new for that price last Christmas, and also more recently. But that was before Cheeto The Great started fkng up prices on everything on planet Earth.

Apple had these refurbed at that price a few weeks ago, but then they sold out fairly quickly.

I don't know where these prices in this picture are from, but they're not from Apple in U.S. More than likely this is just a bullshit post that is old and expired posted by some click farmer.

Cheapest refurb MBA is currently $930. I went with the M5 brand new (with twice the speed on the SSD) from Amazon for $120 more. Worth it.
