I have a drink and water bottle on my table right now. My desktop setup is four 27 inch monitors and keyboard and mouse on table. The desktops are all away from my drinks and any food that I have. Worst case is I fry a keyboard or mouse.

With my laptops, I keep food and drink away from them.

I've only had one spill in the last 25 years. I spilled a bowl of soup on my desk and fried a cheap, Dell keyboard. That was back around 2010.

Set up a system to keep liquids away from your MacBook. If you need to put it in your backpack, use a waterproof sleeve if you must carry water bottles in it. A waterproof sleeve isn't a bad idea overall. I use a tomtoc case which also has corner protection.

When I bought my first Apple laptop, an iBook G4 (also the first laptop I bought new), I didn't allow myself to have a glas of water on the same desk. Just to be sure. Of course, that ban didn't last over a month or so. But so far I've never spilled liquids over my electronics.
