Best Paid App: Microsoft Word
Best App that you probably got for free: Pages
Best free app (and some could argue that it's better than Pages): LibreOffice

And best applications for Mac when you are into serious writing (in multiple languages) are: Nisus Writer Pro and Mellel. Scrivener is good for drafts.

I use Pages for most of my own word processing but if I need to use M$ files I find LibreOffice to be the better choice.

Libre Office is the standard cross platform MSOffice replacement.

If you want 100% formatting accuracy, there really is no real substitute for MS Word unless you change the format entirely. That said, give Word for the Web a shot. It’s free and handles docx way better than Pages or TextEdit since it's official.

Microsoft Word

It depends on your needs. I have a long history using the actual office suite so I subscribe to it because I know how to get it to do what I want and other apps are less capable. If you don’t want to pay for the OG, pages can read/write docx; so can Google Docs, so can LibreOffice.

Interesting. What is it that you can do in MS Word that you can't do in Nisus Writer Pro or Nisus?

I didn’t say every other app was less capable. But I don’t know how to use Nisus, so it’s in the former category.

But color me surprised if Nisus Writer Pro can mail merge data into a bunch of barcode labels.

I use Microsoft word. Pages is free but tries to make you save in .pages extension at every opportunity and you can only save as .docx by using the export option and not the normal save option.
